The Dolphins recently were looking at Harvey Unga, a RB from BYU and it made me wonder whether the Dolphins want to keep Brown.

I know he is a great running back, but the Dolphins still have Williams for a few years, and I think that Ricky will be able to last long enough for Miami to find a replacement back. What do you guys think?

Sign the player midseason...3 years, 12 to 15 million...continue what you started..The run takes place next year, and Imo Ronnie and Ricky will play major roles in that run.

You think Miami will be willing to pay Brown that much even though he is so injury prone?

I think the FO would give him 3 and 15 in a heartbeat. But Ronnie's a fool if he takes any less than 5 years, especially w/o hitting the market to see what he can get first.

I think we franchise Ronnie and look for a replacement. If we find one, we trade him, if not, we keep him for a year and repeat the process until we find someone suitable.

Yes I do...I think that part of being a GM is that you have to take some risks when projecting talent and impact...if the player is healthy at the midseason point, I think you sign him to avoid the player reaching free agency if you truly value the player... I don't believe projecting injury on a healthy player is doing the job correctly...What I do think you do is reflect that issue within the contracts monetary value.

RW said he planned to retire after the 2010 season when he signed that one-year extension. Obviously, he could change his mind and we may want him back if he doesn't start looking old this year, but I don't see why you would say we still have Williams for a few more years.

As for Brown, it will be a money thing. The team will either sign him to a modest deal like the 3 for 15 mentioned above or they might just franchise him for one year and then let him go.

Ricky has been quoted as saying that when a running back hits 32 he loses his wheels. I think Ronnie will get his extension, but it will be interesting to see if Ricky's theory holds true.

It seems like some people write Ronnie Brown off every year whether it be him being injury prone, inconsistant, etc, etc. My guess is they will see if he can get through a season injury free before they offer him what he would like to get. An injury free season could also present the opportunity to sign him to a new contract and then trade. Another season with an injury would probably eliminate any chance of trading for anything much and increase the urgency for finding a replacement.

Well, that's just it...as of right now, we DON'T have Ronnie and Ricky after this season. Taking an Unga might be some insurance for next season. However, I think Unga's issues will keep them from drafting him now, especially since we are short a 2nd round pick next draft as it is...

Honestly, I don't think it's anything to get too worried about. Raise your head up and look around the league. There are an awful lot of players who are in the same boat as Brown due to CBA, or lack thereof.
Once the NFL and players' union settle their differences, Brown will end up being given a chance to sign a multi year contract with the Dolphins. It'll be what our FO believes to be a fair offer; the rest is up to Brown.
However, first Ronnie is going to need to show that he is still able to be productive after this latest injury. I know most of us are expecting him to come back with no ill effects, but the FO doesn't have the same luxury as we have. IMO those two factors are delaying any real contract offer.

This is Ronnie's last year in Miami dj...

I know you dont want to believe it... but hes gone. A 30 y/o RB with injury issues? We arent resigning him. Maybe franchise tag him and trade... or franchise tag and hold him for 1 more year... but we arent going to resign him...

See how he does this season behind our improved OL, if he goes 1,700+ yards and stays healthy, THEN we give him a 3 year contract, no longer. And we draft Ricky/Ronnie's eventual replacement. If he won't take a 3 year contract, we put the franchise tag on him, then draft his replacement.

I love me some Ronnie Brown, but he is injury prone, not deniable even though they were all freak accidents.

I think, right now, the best Ronnie could do is a one year franchise tender. I think next year we draft a back early.

There's a pervasive notion that we have a good idea what this FO will and won't do based on our perception of Parcells' actions in the past.
But what our FO has been doing here seems to be in direct contrast to all that.
In spite of the thought that Parcells hates players who can't seem to avoid injuries, how many players have we seen signed (and some resigned) who haven't been able to maintain long term health?
How about the notion that Parcells doesn't value CB's enough to draft one (not to mention two) very early?
Who can say that he really believed that this front office would be willing to give up 2 second round draft picks for a WR with the baggage that Brandon Marshall brings?
Again just my own opinion, but looking at what this FO has done while here and only here, I would say that Brown will be resigned - or I should say, given the opportunity to re-sign. It'll be up to him to decide if the money is enough to keep him here.

It depends on how this season plays out.......

If we make a good run this year and even get close to a SB appearance AND Ronnie stays healthy and is a big part of that run..... then they'd be nuts not to re-sign him and keep moving forward with what we have.

He may get injured a little too much but he's not your everyday running back.... he might not be the best running back in the league, but IMO, he's deff the most dynamic and offers more to "our" style of offense than anyone I can think of that might replace him.

Never. Thats not how these guys roll. Not for a 29 yr old running back. I'd say they will offer him 2 year, 8 million dollars, take it or leave it.

dynamic's, talent, versatlity, power, intelligence, WQ executioner..He'll be 31 years old at the end of a 3 year contract if signed midseason..For the type of game Ronnie plays, he'll be just as good as he is now when he's 31..

4 mill a year for this player aint sh$3 if he stay's healthy..

Please don't come back with an "if" answer...were projecting healthy, if he goes thru to midseason healthy.

I believe that this offense is being designed differently then what we have come to know in this league...You must feel that everything has been done out of necessity up until this point, and is easy to disregard, I don't brother, I believe it was born of desperation, but now is being evolved accordingly because of the talent on the roster, ronnie brown being the significant piece in that scenario...

I don't think any talent evaluator or coach, or GM, would give up on a supremely talented player, who's talents are even heightened out of a formation that demands specific skills...which Ronnie brown has in spades..

There is no more effective running game the past 2 years in the nfl, then the ronnie brown led wildcat.. I can't understand Nasty why you would not want to see this thru, regardless of some injury risk

Yeah I agree, brother. All discussions have to start with "if healthy". But I think the FO values what Brown brings to the table. As you alluded to earlier, I think the FO wants to make sure his injury isn't going to hamper his ability to be productive and I think they want to let the NFL v NFLPA issues sort of play out before making a long term commitment.

Unga is just the kind of RB Parcells would target for Miiami
he's perfect, available, is a fit & resolves the 2011 dilemma
while possessing the potential to contribute immediately
I fully expect Miami to be in the middle of the signing frenzy

I don't know that signing a Back that's worthy of a 4th or 5th round selection is going to make RB expendable. Lets not make this guy out to be more than he is.

All I'm going to say on this matter is that for a player who has missed 25% of the games in his career that's an awfully hard projection to blindly agree with.

On the one hand he gets injured a lot. On the other hand we gave smiley and grove good money after they were injured a lot for other teams. One one hand this FO likes lunch pail players. on the other hand they draft Pat Turner who had a rep for being lazy and underachieving.

My point is, nobody knows what this FO's hand is.

welcome to the NFL...There is always risk in projection, if you make your decisions based on the past, then I don't think you are gonna make it as a GM, there are stories that work out both ways ya know. All you can do is make an assessment based on the injuries and how they happened, and make your move, then, live or die with the move...If I'am a Gm, i'am gonna risk the move on the talent of ronnie brown, especially considering what kind of dynamics he brings to this particular team.

Any GM that doesn't consider risk vis a vis Ronnie Brown is inept. It has to be considered. The guy misses every fourth game. That is huge. Esp at his age.

I love Ronnie... but I DO NOT want to design my offense around him. I'm done with that. Point blank DJ... he CAN NOT be depended on. I've been defending the injuries for years... but enough is enough. We need to focus on a different player to build and revolve our offense around. Having Ronnie play great out of the Wildcat is worthless if he's only on the field for 7 games...

The focus of the offense needs to shift to Henne/Marshall... b/c those 2 can at least be counted on for the entire season.

I don't think this team will ever focus on any one or two players. We focus on being able to beat teams in many different ways. Whether it be Henne, Marshall, Brown, Ricky, Cobbs, White, etc.

You put a lot into the OL, then get a bunch of skill position players that are smart and don't make mistakes. You give those players good enough coaches, and good things are bound to happen.

Every offense needs its bread and butter though. An identity. It can be versatile and adaptable, but it still needs the one thing it can do best and depend on every game.

And we cant make that bread and butter Ronnie Brown anymore... b/c when he goes down to injury about half way through the season... our offense takes a MAJOR hit. It has really crippled us in recent years... and we need to move away from that to something that is more reliable...

Ronnie needs to be a side dish... not the main course...

And thats the exact reason why we wont extend him to a longer deal. The longest he will play for us is 1 more additional year under a franchise tag...

There is always risk in projection, but if you don't consider the past when making your decisions I don't think you're gonna make it as a GM either. Yes, Ronnie Brown has talent. He's a dynamic runner who brings a whole new gimmick to our offense. A gimmick we don't truly need any longer. And what's more he's missed 25% of his games in his career (20/80.) His injuries include a knee injury (ACL) and foot injury (Lis Francs sp?.) If you really want to give a large extension, healthy or not, to a running back who will be 29 by the end of the season who has missed 1 out of every 4 games in his career and has a history of knee and foot injuries, then, and I mean no offense whatsoever here, I'm glad you're NOT the GM of the Dolphins.

I understand your point, I think if you see us continue to evolve this hybrid offense during the first 8 weeks of the season, then I think that the regime has intent on building a special offense, that I alluded to earlier, and if so, then I believe you resign the player if he stay's healthy thru midseason...If you start to see less wildcat, then I can see your vision..However, I'am firmly entrenched that this regime wants to run this hybrid system because they recognize what the formation brings out, of the supremely talented player, and how they can attack defense using this multidimensional offensive theory..FN, you know ive been debating this for two years {since i first witnessed ronnie take his own snap, I saw brilliance}, that we will continue to evolve this offense, and brother, everything that we have shown, has shown me to be correct in this situation no?...where are the tangible signs that we will not continue this?, and if so, why would you let go of the player that is without question, the best in football at it?

Where are the tangible signs? How about that we rarely used it the second half of last year? How about we signed Brandon Marshall? Or the maturation of Henne. It was said last year that one of the chief benefits of the WC was that it gave Henne time to come out of the game and look at coverages. He wont need that this year. Henne wants the ball in his hands, and when you have a true QB the coaches want the ball in his hands. I'm not saying we will never run the WC again, but the WC was a formation we used because we HAD to. It never was the focal point of our offense and it was even less utitlized last season, even before Ronnie went down, save for a couple games. And I see no reason why that trend will reverse itself with a much more competent offense being fielded now.

of course you take into account the past of ones accomplishments, good or bad, however, as a GM, I think each case must be looked at completely objectively..your take seems to have a generalization's on the subject of prior injury history..I think we must watch Ronnie closely thru 8 weeks, If there is no dropoff in skill level or athleticism, and he is healthy at the midway point, then I don't NOT sign the player because he hurt his foot last year, I assess the player moving forward at that point, because i have a time frame of data that he did stay healthy, and, his importance to what were trying to accomplish as an offense, which is Multidimensional offensive attack, and a groundbreaking run game.

also, the fact that you still refer to what we've been doing for 2 years as a gimmick tells me all I need to know....I see what were doing as nothing of the sort.

Because Ronnie Brown went down, and let me say this for the record, the moment ronnie brown is off this team, or injured, you will never hear me speak of this wildcat formation ever again...as much as I loved it, I was completely against it after his injury last year...bottom line it needs to be renamed the ronnie brown formation because of his brilliance in it.

    however
next year will bring the real need
& the guy is available now

should we need to replace one of the the two @ tandem
