Champ Bailey said he would like to switch to safety to pro long his career. He is 32 and lets just say he played at a high level last year. Not going to predict the same high level at cb this year without a coordinator and being another year older. Question 1. Can he be a stud FS for the next 3 years? Question 2. How much would you pay? Being under contract it would take him being released which is possible when he is owed 13 million this season. He wants to be payed like a top corner. Is there a middle ground and can Nolan bring him in?
1. I think he's a corner. There's no real need for another here. 2. $0.10/hr. He's like 80 years old.
Last thing we need to do is forego developing our own draft talent for an expensive & aging CB just to put him at FS. No thanks.
I think he could possibly be a very good FS. I think you'd have to either put him through a workout or break down a lot of film to get a better read on that though. As for the pay, I don't think the market dictates that any S (not named Ed Reed) should get more than $3.5-$4.0 mil/per. I would pay that for a guy I thought was a pro-bowl FS.
I think people underestimate how difficult it is to switch from CB to FS. Not saying he can't do it, but its a completely different game at each position.
Wouldnt be surprised to see him make the transition. Rod Woodson reinvented himself as a safety after he lost a step, and played another, what, 3 years? At a pro bowl level even...
I've got to think that if Nolan thought Champ could make the switch and be better than what we currently have you would have to think we would show some interest. That would be the only way I see us chasing him.
Champ Bailey said he wants to play another 2 years at corner before making the switch to FS. And if anyone in the NFL could go from Pro Bowl CB to Pro Bowl FS it's him. That said, I don't see him coming to Miami any time soon.
I agree he would like to play corner another 2 years. Denver nor anyone else will pay him 13 million a year to play corner at his age. Hence he will have to settle and be underpaid(by his standards) to play corner or overpaid(per league standards) to play fs. IMO
While I agree with you here, it's not as difficult for the brighter football players. Look at Charles Woodson last year, who made the change at the half for Green Bay when they played Carolina.
