In the heat of the moment, I think anyone would have done the same thing. Gyan should have hammered it home on that pk.
Shouldnt a Handball infront of the goal....be like GOAL TENDING in Basketball? this is a silly, silly sport
The Suarez handball is one of those plays in sports that gets glorified if it works, and cursed if it doesn't.
Alas, there's no chance of it not working to begin with. Don't do it and you're out. Do it and you've got a minimal chance. There was no either or. It was a must-do move.
WTF are you talking about? In that situation you do WHATEVER it takes to keep the ball going into the net. You use your **** if you have to. Anyone who disagrees has obviously no clue about playing soccer, especially on defense. Suarez's entire country should be happy that he did that, and I'd bet they are.
To me, it looked like he could have blocked it with a header, like we see all the time. They're trained to stop it with their head and chest. I know we're talking about miliseconds here...but those penalty box situations are trained for. If Gyan had not choked on his PK, Suarez would have been crucified. That was pure luck. 8 out of 10 times, Gyan makes that goal. But they passed. He won't play. And he might be called a savior, now.
I don't see why he would have been crucified. This is literally the last second of overtime in the quarter finals of the World Cup. You don't rely on a header there in the spur of one millisecond. You do whatever it takes to give your squad one more chance.
LOL. There is no way he could have gotten his head into the position that his hand was in in a matter of nanoseconds. This is just a ridiculous opinion. No way would Suarez be a goat either. He saved the goal. End of story. He gave his team a real chance of stopping Ghana from scoring, via PK.
I understand why Americans hate the sport now. Most of them are too stupid to understand it. Use football as an analogy. If you have to horsetackle a guy at the goalline to save a Superbowl winning TD in the last 10 seconds of the game, YOU DO IT!
Gotta say this though: There's no reason whatsoever - especially considering we're talking about a chip in the ball - not to award an automatic goal to the attacking team and a red card to the defender in these situations.
Red cards and penalties are all subject to referees' views. What if it is an unintentional handball (something that happens ALL THE TIME). You'd want your country's chances of winning a World Cup going down the drain because the referee thought that your team's unintentional handball was intentional, and he just gave your best player a red card, AND THE OTHER TEAM SCORES A GOAL. Makes no sense. Why are we always trying to change the rules? It is what it is, and has been that way for years.
I completely understand your point of view and I guess you're right. Whoa, buddy. People argue/debate about sports all the time. It's VERY arrogant to call someone stupid just because they don't agree with you. Are you the end all, be all of football analysis? Sheesh.
First of all, no, it doesn't happen ALL THE TIME in goal line situations. In fact, I don't recall a single instance where such a call made by the ref was dead wrong. Not one. But of course I'll grant you the hypothetical scenario. Second, there's no such thing as intentional or unintentional handball. It's a football urban legend The red card is given anyway by today's rules, so there's no difference there. Player is sent off anyway, period. The rest is math. You take into account how often the ref is wrong in these situations (not often at all), then you take into account how often penalties miss (more often) and it becomes a no brainer.
True. I saw that earlier. but the world follows football..so if someone doesnt like the game cause of dives and handballs, theyre in the minority and its their loss.
I'll say this on the diving issue: There's no more diving in football than there is in American football. Just a different kind.
It's certainly legitimate not to like game because of unfair behavior. But if that's your personal cup of tea, then you can't watch any sport anymore. And certainly not American football where it's legitimate to, say, send in the snowplow to pave the way for your decisive field goal.
Well, most of us would agree regardless of the sports we watch, have played, or have a passion for.....we all want our sports to improve themselves, adjust rules for the "good of the game" (especially if technology allows for it); clean up the negative elements or get rid of the less than desirable elements of the game, and continue to heighten the quality aspects the draw our interest in the first place. I can not name a major sport (global and beyond the USA big 4 even) that does not regularly benefit from modifying the rules to enhance the product on the field, often when a majority of eyes have watched and aided in pointing out the "old" flaws. You can argue old school vs. new school, but improvements are improvements and this WC has shown this sport could benefit from quite a few improvements. It would only benefit from the changes; I hope it happens sooner rather than later.
Yes there is.......a intentional handball is when the hand hits the ball first, a unintentional handball is where the ball hits the hand first From a referee point, there is a huge difference
what an amazing day... and it's only half over looking at tomorrow's games. Knew Ghana would lose if it came down to penalties. I thought the ball was over the line at first glance on Suarez hand ball... Happy for Holland though!! Holland vs Spain and I won't know who the hell to root for. Probably Holland. Two sides that "deserve" a world cup.
Summer of Oranje , Clockwork Orange , World Cup Fever Oranje ! Perhaps the promise becomes realized this summer. As illustrated by their performance after the first half , there is a resolve and resiliency to this Dutch squad. I feel there are a couple dominant games by a couple KNVB'ers left .If that happens , their chances are better than good Impressive run of games , wow .
Im guessing you're talking about Forlan's goal. It wasn't a keeper mistake. A keeper has to first take a step or two to the other side. He did that. They have to do that every time as 99% of shots will go that way and they start on the complete other side leaving the goal wide open. So he backtracked after taking the first couple of steps, but the awesome shot by Forlan was impossible to save. If he stand still, and its a weak shot to the first post, its a goal and THAT's a mistake by the keeper. Let me know if I wasn't clear in my choice of words
Well Baggio missed a penalty in the final but it was not like this one.....If Ghana makes the kick they are in....This never happens and he choked Baggio missing is like any player missing....Are we calling the Japan guy who hit the crossbar a choker??? When games go to penalties a 100% of the time a player misses
IMO... At the time..Roberto Baggio was at least a top 5 player in the world. If you are a top 5 player..you are NOT allowed to miss penalty kicks without hitting anything. IMO of course. If the keeper guesses right and stops you...that is very different than being Roberto Baggio and kicking it out of the stadium.
No, there isn't, Steve. The one and only decisive factor is whether or not the hand moves towards the ball. It's very possible to move your hand towards the ball unintentionally. The referee isn't supposed to judge whether or not a player used his hands on purpose. He's only supposed to judge whether or not the hand moves towards the ball and not vice versa.
Phenomenal and classic German goal there! They always seem to start strong and have explosive scoring. Great ball in by Klose.
But, Germany has to score on their chances. I think The Argentines will control the ball better. Good D by Deutschland! This should be a fascinating game b/c of the contrasting styles of the teams!
