So....I cracked my screen on my Android touchscreen yesterday and am considering the HD2. Was time for an upgrade (phone is 7 mos old!), but this unfortunate accident was just that. No ulterior motive here, eh? I would consider switching carriers, but I am quite happy with T-mobile. So, I'm going to stick with them.

Which leads to this: I am highly considering the HTC HD2.

Aesthetically, the phone is a beaut. But I have been reading rumblings on blogs all over the web about the current Windows OS it runs. I have also read that hackers are really close to coming up with an Android OS with which one could hack onto the HD2.

I am not the most gifted when it comes to electronics. It basically stops at the attempts of getting my surround sound to 'sound' exceptional. Basically, hacking a new phone scares me!

So, I am here to "get me some enlightenment" on hacking new phones. Is it simple? The risks involved?

Does anyone here have an HTC HD2? Pros/cons? Suggestions?

As I am sticking with T-mobile, my options are limited. But I am almost there in making my decision on the HD2.

    Enlighten me!

I would pass on the HD2, personally. You're much better off going with the Hero, or the HTC Evo (if you're interested in switching to Sprint, that is)

I've heard nothing but bad things about the WinMo OS on HTC phones. And the EVO, for roughly the same price as the HD2 (at least it was) already has Android. I'd go with that.

EDIT: Saw you're sticking with T-Mo. Missed that part.

I just left many long years of Windows Mobile phones, for an EVO. Windows Mobile is a phone geeks dream, it is very customizable and there are plenty of talented developers. While the OS is much more in-depth than Iphone and even Android, it lacks the polish of the other two. It gets a bad rap from people because its so tough to use and that's totally understandable, but when you have a custom rom, running well, it's a thing of geek heaven. All the steps from unlocking your phone to loading a custom rom sound very scary, but if you follow the well laid out instructions you won't have a problem. After a couple of times you have no fear and it's just a way of life.

All that being said I would not get the HD2. Windows Mobile 6.5.5 is a dead operating system, the whole dev. team is working on Windows Mobile 7. The Rom the HD2 comes with is out of date, I have the newest version of that rom on my old diamond.

If I was you and was going to stay on T-Mobile I would wait about a month or so for the Galaxy S. It's a Android phone like the EVO in spec, and many folks think it will be a great phone. Here is some info on it.. Hope this helps..

I have a HTC HD2 and let me tell you the OS sucks a$$. Windows is a joke. They should be ashamed of themselves for putting out the garbage they call windows mobile 6.5. 7.0 is due out soon but it will not let you teather to your laptop or hotspot like a lot of the droid phones.

T mobile is great and their internet is phenomenal in my area. So good I got rid of suck a$$ comcast and use it exclusively at the house. Got my wife one also....she likes it also. The phone is really good. The apps for it are extremely limited.

They have broken the phone and created a version of the Android software that is almost flawless at this point. There are a few bugs yet but they are real close. I contacted HTC, T mobile, and windows directly to discuss this crap they call windows 6.5.

T mobile in a nut shell told me they made a mistake going with windows instead of android. For now they are contracted with windows for that phone. I was told or should I say it was suggested to carry insurance on the phone in case my android, no I mean windows software ever had a problem I would be covered. (wink, wink).

Microsoft basically responded to my schalacting(sp) by asking me to be patient until windows 7.0 comes out and that the tons of problems and crap the phone has as a result will be fixed.....however no teathering......wrong answer.

HTC basically did not respond. They thanked me for my input but that was it........nothing. I guarantee if that is how they are going to provide customer service they will not be around for long. The phone in my opinion with the right operating system blows the I phone away. Windows is the problem here.....not the phone. The phone has a 1 GHZ snapdragon processor that is LIGHTNING fast......that is if you want to constantly start windows task manager to stop whatever is running in the background. Windows is really a drag on the battery to because if you forget to stop the programs running in the background it just eats up the battery. Make sure you have a charger everywhere you go. That said when running just one app at a time this phone smokes everything on the market....it is just to bad that windows doesn't actually end the program you where using when you close it out

I did learn by searching for hours that you can actually run the droid software while at the same time having windows still installed on your phone. When you boot it you just boot the phone from a SD card that you format and install in the back of the phone under the battery. I have personally seen and played with an HTC HD2 that had droid on it and the whole time I played with it I was mystified. I didn't have any problems so the info I pass to you came from a friend who said since he has had the droid installed he has had to reboot the phone 2 times in a month because the screen froze....no other issues that he told me about. The software is free and you can download it with instructions that they have on the site. You also need to download and install a program called Haret to do the install.

Anyway....good luck let me know what you think. Both the wife and I have the family unlimited talk, text and internet for $140. Cant beat that with a stick for 2 phones....and now the internet at home........sweet:up:

on tmobile, id recomend the nexus one. thats what i got. $59 a month for 500 minutes, unlimitted text and web, no contract.

the phone was sold directly from google, but not anymore. it can tether and act as a mobile hotspot for free. i even used it to play a PS3 online.

the nexus one also receives all the android operating system updates from google. no depending on celluar carriers for updates that probably arent coming. i have 2.2 "froyo" now. my buddy with a mytouch slide 3g is still running android 1.6

i havent done this, but apparently you can get nintendo and super nintendo emulators and play all the old games on the N1. you can even tether it with a Wii remote to use for playing the games.

there is also the garmin phone on tmobile. it runs android and has built in garmin navigation which i hear is pretty good.
