Yup, now it's Spain that got robbed. Another penalty could've been awarded in favor of Spain on the goalie's attempt to save th pk's rebound too.

Spain should be playing against ten men, had a legitimate goal rules out and then on the reboud should have had another pen. Appalling job by the ref.

No-one was in the box. They'd broken the plane of the penalty area but their feet were in the air as Xabi shoots. So no issue. The bigger issue was the Paraguayan keeper 3 yards off his line when Xabi's kick is taken. THAT'S an issue.

But, all this because of a Villa dive. There was some encroachment on the good pk, so the rules say you retake it. Quoting your premise throughout this thread, those are the rules of the world's most popular game and they are what they are. Plus, I saw a replay of the missed pk by Cardozzo and there were three spanish players in the middle of the box just as Cardozzo was kicking. So, under the same rule Paraguay could have been given another opportunity to retake it, and should have actually.
So I see everything as even.

Did Villa dive? I don't think so. He went down easily enough, but he's in front of the defender who runs into the back of him. Most players would go down and rightly so.

As for the penalty, there may have been 3 Spaniards in the box but Cardozo missed. There were no Spaniards in the box, the keeper is 3 yards off the line and Alonso scores. And then Fabregas is gatted on the rebound of the retake.

It is what it is mate. Spain were jobbed.

I'm hoping Spain takes out Germany, but they will have to do much better than this.

    Justice served...I guess.

In the Paraguay penalty, there's a HUGE invasion of Spanish players in the box.
Spain will get killed by Germany

No Spanish players were in the Box, but there were 2 spanish players who entered that Circle on top of the box, which is the same thing as entering the box.

I think it's kind of ridiculous, but 2 Spanish players were in fact in that semi-circle area when Xabi Alonso took that initial kick. That's the purpose of that arc....to keep players 10 meters away from the ball at all times.

Either way, Cesc was taken out by the goalie which should've been called. But I do agree with TonE that Villa's initial foul was kind of harsh.

It's all moot now though because Spain won. Hope they beat Germany now

at this stage, whoever scores the first goal wins 4 out of 5 times. thats just the nature of the sport. It rewards the first goal in abundance. you might win 1 out of 5 times if you give up the first goal. whoever scores first in germany/ spain will win. my money is on spain. this is where germany's youth will cost them. in the other game between uruguay/ NED, how many players are going to miss that game?

Another phenomenal game. Great day of futbol and great results for me. Rooting for Germans and Spanish. Paraguayans very strong on defense - and Spain very fortunate. David Villa always seems to be in the right spot.

Will be interesting to see if German defense is as good as Paraguay; if so, Spain will have a tough time b/c German counter-attack is much stronger than Paraguay's.

And of course Spain only wins by one, when I had a bet that they'd win by two or more... unreal.

How the ref calls that Spain penalty back I have no idea. Players in the box? You kidding me?? That is not something you call at the world cup IF IT's CLOSE and it was! If the ref is going to call that, he should be on the goalies for moving off the line on a penalty (which is never called, is it English fans?)

Holland v Spain likely... although Spain needs to do something about Torres, he's clearly not 100%, they need to put someone up top if it's next to Villa who will compliment him. Perhaps Pedro to start, certainly had some good runs after he came on. Consider putting Fabregas in for Xabi Alonso, but then you're playing the Germans who counter like none other.

Excuse me? Not ALL South American sides are the same. And I can't believe I'm defending Argentina but that "true color" is passion. What does this say about the Germans? Instead of winning and keeping it classy, they resort to rubbing it in the face of Maradona(who I despise, btw)

I usually love your posts but this one offends me. I never generalized Europe's teams. Just sayin'

There was some talk about suspending Suarez for two games for his handball that saved a goal, to me that was just a smart play by an athlete, the Ghanians had a chance to score via penalty kick and failed to convert.

Yeah Im not South American but I kind of found the comment offensive to humanity in a way. Seriously...some people are bad sports (not saything any team is) but it doesnt and shouldnt reflect upon their race/religion/whatever in general.

eh paul didnt mean it that way. i think he was referring to brazil and argentina. i agree that it just shows passion and isnt indicative of south americans. when it happens in the NFL we love it. yankees/ red sox anyone? argentina and germany have a history of bad blood between them anyway. its one thing to lose but to lose to the germans if you're argentinian is just salt in the wounds

Win with class, lose with dignity. That goes for everyone... Rooney and Ronaldo alike. I never said ALL South American sides... I was referring to Brazil and Argentina the passed two days and should have made that clear. I've never liked Maradona... Hand of God... he can stick that hand in his yapper for all I care. If I were there I would have rubbed it in his face too. Not all fans would do that. If Tom Brady had a bad game against our Dolphins, I'd give him the business as he left the field, you're damn right about that. Now how he chooses to respond is up to him, not me.

Nah I see how you meant it, but it seemed like you meant it as in like...only South American sides. Or as in ONLY South American sides were like that.

The way you wrote it was kind of weird, but now I can see how you meant it.

Especially after what happened in 2006. I'm very excited about our young team and I think we have a shot. Spain doesn't play as good as in 2008 when they won the european championship against us so it should be a close one. If we get past them, I bet we win the cup. I think we would be much better than both Uruguay or the Oranjes. I live ten minutes from the boarder to the Netherlands so its a personal thing for me ;) We HAVE to beat them.

Btw. I was impressed by the performance of the US Team. I watched them closely because Michael Bradley plays for my home team Borussia Mönchengladbach:up:

well after all his antics and disrespect, maradona deserved every little bit of this, even in his press conference after the germany game, he gave us germans not one bit of credit for beating them, what an arrogant prick he is
