Which has worked out so well to date.

David Stern isn't going to sprinkle magic pixie dust and break the rules for LeBron. Cleveland will have to find willing trade partners and make the compensation work like any other trade. The Cavs have nothing to work with in that regard.

At that point they'd basically be gutting the team and trying to compete with Miami for veteran minimums at a time when Miami already has deals lined up if LeBron doesn't come down. Then next year they'd have to compete with the Knicks, and the Knicks would still have plenty of cap room and apparently a high probability of acquiring Carmelo Anthony.

I don't see it happening. Not for CP3 anyway.

    According to ESPN Radio

Randy Foye has already told LBJ "yes" in regards to playing for the minimum in Miami

The NBA where Stern has showed favoritism but did it by going outside the rules rather than through the rules.

Example: creating the draft lottery to ensure that the Knicks got Patrick Ewing.

Not saying the Chris Paul thing is going to happen, but the Cavs do have -

    West - $4.6 mil
    Parker $2.8 mil
    Telfair - $2.7 mil
Hickson - $1.5 mil (and young talent)
    Moon - $3 mil

    Total expirings - $14.6 mil

Plus Varajao, Jamison, Mo Williams as talent to send back.

(Looks like this has already been posted)

As for the 'gutting the team' argument - they would still have Mo Williams, Atawn Jamison, Leon Powe, Daniel Gibson, Jawad Williams and Danny Green. Not great pieces - but if you add Bron and CP3 to that team, there is at least as much as NYK have.

I hesitate to categorize those three as "talent." Maybe Mo Williams on a good night.

Also, those expirings you list still don't equal CP3's contract.

All Stern has to do is call Gary Chouest and say the right things. Just like Stern/Jerry West did with the Grizzlies. Doesn't take much to convince a team worth $280M to dump salary, and be owed a favor by the league.

Either way, its really just speculation on my part, I don't think there has been anything said regarding Paul going to Cleveland. I'm just throwing out possible scenarios for tonight's extravaganza.

Bigger question; Why would Chris Paul go to Cleveland? To win what? They'd still have a piss-pour post presence. If anything, the only team I'd like Paul to go is NYC with Amar'e and hopefully Carmelo Anthony to create a team to compete with Miami.

Also, I think everyone should bare in mind that Free Agency doesn't actually end with Lebron's ESPN special. This is going to be a two-season process before Miami truly sees its final roster, IMO.

Example of ESPN anti-Miami bias: Trey Wingo and Mike Golic think that Miami being fan-ranked 11th is too high despite our offseason and they think we're not very good... but Pittsburgh without Ben Roethlisberger for six games and their bad OL becoming even worse without Willie Colon is better than 16th.

It's going to be so sweet on Friday morning watching ESPN try to justify LeBron in Miami to themselves.

Just because Knicks fans are delusional about their team doesn't mean you need to pull a Bulls fan and join in the delusion.

If Lebron goes to Chicago, he WON'T win a championship. Even with Lebron, they aren't better than the Lakers. Bynum > Noah, Gasol > Boozer, Artest > Deng, Kobe = Lebron, Rose > Blake (but right now that's much of a difference, IMO).

When did Chicago have this world-beater roster exactly?

Another untrue popular fact, "Wade needs the ball in his hands." He's on multiple occasions said he prefers to play off the pass instead off the dribble.

You have to understand that in the NBA a bad contract is worth more then the player especially for small market team. I've see more trades for expiring bad contracts then anything else.

LBJ and Wade are actually very good complements to each other. Both are willing passers, Wade has gone much more to the mid-range game in recent years while LBJ still drives.

And at the end of games, frankly, I think LBJ will be more than happy to let Wade take the last shot. As great as he is, I don't know that he has that "assassin" mentality that Wade does.

And then John Hollinger explains to bill simmons how the NBA really works:

In the meantime, let's take a closer look at the LeBron-to-Miami possibility. The salary cap implications and complications that would be in play if he went to the Heat are worth exploring.

Currently, excluding Dwyane Wade/Chris Bosh, the Heat have only three active players on their cap -- Michael Beasley ($4.96 million), Joel Anthony ($1.06M qualifying offer) and Mario Chalmers ($854,000). They also have a $1.55 million cap charge from the buyout of James Jones' contract. That adds up to a little more than $8.4 million.

Under NBA collective bargaining rules, every team has to have at least 12 players taking up cap room, even if a team has nobody under contract. Those so-called phantom players have cap holds of $473,604 apiece.

We can subtract two of those phantoms now that we know that Wade and Bosh will be playing in Miami, their salaries yet to be determined. Both stars said they would be willing to take less money in order to facilitate the building of a dynasty, which has been Pat Riley's grand plan all along. (I wrote about it back in training camp.)

So the big question is: How much less than max money would Wade, Bosh and James have to take to make Miami Thrice a reality?

First the math: Beasley, Anthony, Jones and Chalmers take up a combined $8.4 million of cap room, but only three roster spots (Jones counts against the cap but not on the roster).

Wade, James and Bosh would take up three more roster spots, so the Heat would have to carry six phantoms, whose salary cap holds would add up to nearly $2.9 million. That accounts for $11.3 million in committed salary, leaving the Heat with $46.8 million in room beneath the new salary cap figure of $58,044,000.

If you divide $46.8 million by three (assuming Wade, Bosh and James would all take equal salaries), it comes out to $15.56 million apiece -- $1 million less than the max salary that all three superstars are eligible to receive. Since Florida does not have state income tax, the $15.56 million that James would be taking from Miami would be roughly equivalent in post-tax dollars to the $16.56 million the Knicks (or the Nets, Bulls, Cavs and Clippers) could pay him under a max contract.

Miami would then have to fill out its roster, going over the salary cap with seven players on minimum salaries to reach the NBA's minimum roster size of 13. Miami selected three players in the second round of last month's draft: Texas center Dexter Pittman, Mississippi State PF Jarvis Varnado and West Virginia small forward DaSean Butler. The Heat also hold the rights to 2009 2nd round pick Patrick Beverly, who spent last season with Olympiacos of Greece and is on the Heat's summer league roster. If they re-signed Jones (after signing Wade/James/Bosh) at the veteran minimum salary for a player with seven years of experience ($1.146 million), Jones would make up the money he forfeited in his buyout, and the Heat would have a shooter.

Sounds like a pretty viable plan, eh?

That's why the Knicks (and Cavs and Bulls and Nets) have good reason to be chewing their fingernails harder than LeBron ever has as the hours tick down toward 9 p.m. tonight.

And more smart people hop on the runaway train. Rovell crunches the numbers and finds that for the first 5 years of the K, LBJ will actually make more in Miami than CLE when factoring in state taxes.

And apparently Brian Windhorst, the guy whose 15 minutes of fame expire at 9:00 pm, is on the radio saying that LBJ to Heat is practically a done deal and that Dan Gilbert is considering filing tampering charges :lol::lol:

IMO Wade and Lebron can play together very easily. (Bosh is an obvious complement). I think both Wade and Lebron have more Magic Johnson in them than Michael Jordan. I think they both like to spend time being the facilitator and don't always want to have to take the last shot. Now of course they both can take the last shot and that is what both players have done over the last couple of years, but before that Lebron was often criticized for being too unselfish. And Wade has openly fantasized about having a 20 assist night. I think personality wise these guys would be just as happy with the great assist as the great dunk provided they were winning. And naturally they will still get their shots.

Wow - lot of hate for Cleveland - remember how all of you would feel if Wade had left Miami.

As for Wade / LeBron - I think it is going to be a Jeter / ARod situation. Wade is the beloved star who gets credit for the championships and Bron is the more talented guy that gets all the media scrutiny. He brought it on himself.

This is the kind of **** I'm talking about with Simmons:

Is he 100 years old, he just completely ******ed? You think Chris Bosh, or any NBA player for that matter, gives two ****s about tradition? LOL

Bosh: "Yeah, sorry D-Wade. I wanted to come play with in Miami but...ummm...well, you guys just don't have the type of tradition of say a Boston or New York. Thank, but no thanks."

But, guys like Simmons will keep tooting this "Miami Hate" horn. I bet his ancestors delayed coming to America because it lacked tradition. Then, after they saw how popular and successful it became, quietly got on that ****ing boat like everyone else.

I'm sorry Phin, don't mean to hate on Cleveland.

If LBJ does come to the Heat I will certainly understand why Cavs fans are crushed, but for a beat writer to opine that "it's not safe" for him in Akron and for the owner to file tampering charges based on nothing except petulance is ridiculous.

It's just a game. The Cavs org will go on. If Wade had left the Heat it would've sucked, but the games will still be played.

Here's a rundown of the Brian Windhorst interview from Cavs forum:

Saw this on a cav forum

brian windhorst cav beat writer on WKNR local radio just now:

He sounds completely defeated, for what it's worth.

    - Lebron has told a lot of people he is going to go to Miami. Been in various stages of that for the last week.

    - Recruited hard by Wade and Bosh. Sometime on Tuesday came around a little bit.

    - There are a lot of people around him who think it is a bad decision.

    - BUT until he goes on the record - or Maverick Carter - it's not done. Stressed this many times.

    - It's possible he could reconsider, but advises people of Cleveland to be prepared for anger.

    - Doesn't think LeBron fully understands what the repercussions will be about leaving.

    - Pretty much everything LeBron has said will be ruled hypocritical about family, etc.

    - About how LeBron is changing: stresses the left-handed free throw and the non-explanation for it - Windy says that is the first time that he said "come again?" about Lebron. Then the Celtics series, then Larry King. He was especially shocked at Lebron's "I spoil the people" answer after Game 5.

    - Says LeBron thought Tiger's recent damage control press conference was a good idea.

    - Feels like LeBron was a always a guy who had some problems, but because of his athletic talent, was able to overwhelm those problems. But his "tone-deafness" to his hometown is shocking but not unexpected.

    - Most national media think LeBron is an absolute fool, but will cover him. Most casual NBA fans will be somewhat turned off, but will come back. In the teams cities that are chasing him he will have taken a tremendous hit.

    - Nike is not thrilled about this because it significantly damages his brand.

    - About sentiment here if he truly leaves: "If LeBron has left his house, I hope he's packed for a good long time, because he can't come back. LeBron will be radioactive here for a long time"

    - On how LeBron will spin it: will dump on the Cavs roster, will say he wants to go play with his friends and win multiple championships. Then says he will go to a love-fest of Akron.

    - On where Cavs go from here assuming LeBron leaves for Miami: The rats will jump off the ship, will hear tons of anti-LeBron stuff from the organization. "Hell hath no fury like Dan Gilbert's scorn". Have 9 million in cap space, if cut Delonte - will have 13 million. No free agents will want to come because of LeBron's indecision.

    - Doesn't think the Cavs will tear down and rebuild. Thinks Gilbert will try to make deals to have Cavs make the playoffs. But unfortunately, there is no Plan B for if LeBron leaves.

    - On Chris Paul trade: the Cavs have tried EVERYTHING to get him, but don't have the assets to get him because of trying to win title for the last three years. Says this lack of flexibility is a scar left by LeBron. In reality, the deal will not happen.

    - Says it was an absolute privilege to watch LeBron all these years, so to have the opportunity to see him was incredible. But as great as he is, he is not great enough to win a championship by himself. The great players, he says, are able to. The real loss is that he could not bring the city what it truly wanted: a championship. So would have to term LeBron's tenure here a failure.

-Odds he ultimately returns: would like to say 1 in 5, but is really probably lower than that. Says we have most likely underestimated LeBron's ego.

Again this was on local lev radio....From all accounts he completely ripped into lebron james.....

LMAO at Nike being against the move. You think Nike isn't drooling over the Dream Team shirts, hats, and limited edition shoes they can sell worldwide. Please.

Colin Cowherd saying that the "trio" would not match up well against the Lakers..is just plain ******ed.

I won;t even elaborate on that for fear of getting dumber.

For the "Bad for the NBA" BS...

was it "bad for the NBA" when the Lakers and Celtics traded championships int he 80's?

    The Bulls winning 6?

But these guys show up in Miami...and all hell breaks loose.
