I have seen this referenced several times, the latest today in the Jason Cole thread about the DB rankings. Would someone be so kind as to explain what this is all about ? Thanks in advance.
Cole and Armando high fived over a Dolphin loss to the Jets. They did this because they suck as people and journalists.
Really ???? Armando as in Armando Salguero ??? The Miami Herald guy ? Did someone see this or has proof of it ? Do they really hate the Dolphins ? When did this take place ? Are they native NY'ers ? This pisses me off ! Typical of Miami journalists. This towns media seem to only hire someone if they hate the local teams.
Why does he hate the Dolphins ? Has he ever explained that ? I'm boiling mad at this. So glad I cancelled my Herald subscription about a year ago, after 27 years as a subscriber.
Cole is NOT a Dolphins fan, and was happy the season was over, as the Dolphins were pretty dreadful that year. Cole later admitted it, and apologized for the blunder. Armando, however, lied about the incident. He claims he was cheering for a friend of his, Clinton Portis, who wasn't active in a game that week IIRC. He later back tracked, and basically dug a huge hole where he was caught in several other smaller lies. He claims to be a Dolphins fan, but the incident didn't sit right with a lot of people, since he tried so foolishly to cover it up. I believe it was DOLPHANMIKE, a poster here, who outed him when we were all posting at Finheaven. I could be mistaken though.
They were well outed (by Huizenga himself) but it just wasn't very talked about, had been largely forgotten. There was a tense moment during a press conference right around when it happened, I believe Huizenga himself went after Armando about that high five. This actually happened a loooong time ago. What year was it? Wasn't it 2003? DolfanMike brought it back up a few years ago and I think he sent a bunch of emails to Armando about it, and Armando just excused it and generally came off like he was lying to cover for it. Anyway, I actually thought the high five was when Denver scored a touchdown against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 16. If I recall, the Dolphins were 8-6 heading into that week, the Broncos were 9-5, and if the Broncos lost to the Colts then Miami would have still been alive for the playoff race, but if the Broncos beat the Colts then Miami was actually eliminated. I remember Miami finished that year with two straight wins to go 10-6 and the team actually knew two weeks before the season was over that they were eliminated. I think that was why Armando's excuse was that he was cheering for his good buddy Clinton Portis in Denver, rather than cheering that Miami's season was over.
It was the end of the 2003 season. We needed to win our last two games and the Broncos needed to lose their last two to get into the playoffs. We beat the Bills but then the Broncos beat the Colts on Sunday night to knock us out. Clinton Portis played for the Broncos at the time and that's what they claimed they were cheering for.
According to this: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/recap;_ylt=Aos0c.i3Gt1T4A2D_45Fden.uLYF?gid=20031221002 The Dolphins were eliminated a few hours after winning the game against the Bills, when the Broncos defeated the Colts in the 8:30pm SNF game. I think that game is when "high-five gate" actually occurred. But, now that I look it up, I was wrong about DOLFANMIKE bringing it back up way after the fact. He actually brought it up a month or two later. I still believe that the high five took place during the 8:30pm Broncos-Colts game on SNF, not during the 1pm Dolphins-Bills game. The interpretation by Huizenga was clear, that Salguero and Cole were celebrating the death of the Dolphins' playoff hopes. But Armando's explanation was that he was celebrating an off-tackle run by former UM running back Clinton Portis, who happens to be a good friend of Armando's. Until DOLFANMIKE pointed out that Clinton Portis didn't even play in that game...because he was injured. OUCH. Here's the email exchange.
What really seared the whole shenanigans into everyone's mind though was Armando's arrogant response where he was caught in a DIRECT LIE by Mike. I mean, he's sitting here saying he was high-fiving Cole because of a run by a guy who didn't even play in the game. Jason Cole, on the other hand, simply apologized and said it was a very stupid thing to do.
CK pretty much nailed it. Armando was actually caught in 3 lies. Each one is in my signature that I'll carry on each Dolphin board in which I participate. [Edited to include the following: that's 3 lies which were easily refuted by the stats. The final one, "Griffin's big run", could only be contradicted by Jason Cole saying that when he high fived Armando, he was celebrating the Dolphins being knocked out of the playoffs, but he couldn't speak for Armando as to what he was celebrating. It is therefore possible there were only 3 lies by Armando if only Cole was celebrating a Phin disappointment. Knowing Armando's history in this matter, it is not unreasonable, and maybe probable, that he was lying about "Griffin's big run", too, therefore he lied 4 times to cover up.]
Yeah, it was so hard we had no choice but to lower ourselves and copy it outright and pass it off as our own.
The other lies came after the fact when, I believe, other people called Armando out on his Clinton Portis lie. Its very vague for me because I remember not really giving too much of a **** back then about it. Other than, of course, Huizenga calling them out during the press conference which triggered that whole thing. I miss that man as an owner. He was a true fan and allowed the football people to do their job. Granted they did it poorly but still...
He also generally hired bad football people, but that sort of fits in with his letting the football people do football things because he doesn't know jack squat about it. He also had trouble recognizing which football people to trust and which not.
The whole thread is over there at FH in the trophy case. I KNOW my recollection is likely faulty, but at least the first two came from Dolfanmike e-mail exchanges. Maybe all of them did, but I'm thinking at least one of the last 2 came from some radio commentary when Big O did a show about it. And yes, Jason Cole manned up and admitted he was celebrating a winning Donk TD which nailed Miami playoff door shut.
HOLY CRAP.....that's a one-two-three your out verbal slap ! Thanks DolphinMike whereever you are today.
Suddenly Agua's sig, and the overall disdain for Armando on this board makes a lot more sense. Thanks to all for helping to clear that up.
And if you read the post, he never says he's a Dolphins fan. He just says he's not a Raiders fan and that he's a UM fan.
I don't expect the local beat writers to actually be fans of this team. But I do expect them not to do something faux pas like high five each other when something bad happens to the team. They have to have a working relationship with the people in the front office, and those guys really ARE fans of the team. When Wayne Huizenga called Armando out about the high five, that's why you don't do things like that.
Hehehee.... You can still P!@# him off by posting "how 'bout a high 5 Mando?" He'll delete it pretty quickly.
huh, I didnt know this.....maybe cuz I am so far away, and things slip past me.... I WILL NEVER READ A THING BY THIS CLOWN EVER AGAIN!!!! AND WILL CONTINUE TO BAG HIM EVERY CHANCE I GET ON TWITTER........ Update, the year was 2003, I was in Iraq for the whole year of 03, thats why I missed it...
The whole thing started at the press conference introducing Dan Marino into what ultimately became the Bill Parcells role. Armando asked if it was a figurehead position, and Wayne agrily struck back referencing them high fiving over the Dolphins being eliminated from playoff contention at the bar in Buffalo. OT: we forget that Dan resigned 17 days later. DolfanMike emailed Armando as referenced, as did a few other members, and the thread was born. A few of the beat writers joined that thread. One of them told me (at the time) that the thread went all the way to the top (H. Wayne). That "everybody" had seen it. It got an obscene amount of traffic and the local media was all over it. I honestly thought it was overblown and some of the beat guys.....who were there but had no dog in this fight......pretty much confirmed it to me privately. Nobody really knew who told Wayne, but they embellished. Armando handled it very poorly while Jason Cole fell on the sword and took his medicine on Big O's show. Even Cole didn't understand what Armando was doing. OT: I know people who've worked around Armando who say he's a really nice guy in real life. Probably the nicest on the beat. Just comes across differently on the web.
Well, in that case, let me say I'm glad you're home now, and safe, and hope all is well. Bravo Zulu for your service.
I also nailed him during the email exchanges. He admitted to me that they both high fived because the Dolphins were knocked out of the playoffs so that they would not have to travel to see them lose their first playoff game. I also herd him (Armando) say he was a Raiders fan on the air, way before that and called him out on it. He told me in emails that it was not him that I herd....lol
I heard that they were happy because they felt that felt Wanny would be canned if the Fins missed the playoffs and they were tired of dealing with him
I'm sure that's the spin they'd like for you to believe. They were lazy at best (tired of doing their job and didn't want to go to an extra game), but more likely, plain ol' Dolphin haters.
