There's an iOS update forthcoming that'll deal with proximity sensor issues.

No word on a fix for black boxes appearing in place of deleted pictures in the Camera Roll.

every now and then when I'm on my Iphone I wonder what kind of cancer I'll be receiving later in life due to this technology.

Likely none. You ned to use the handset 8 hours a day for years on end to develop even a risk of cancer. If you're that concerned, use a Bluetooth headset, which emits only a fraction of the radiation that handsets give off.

(Sorry, but I see a myth and I instantly want to attack it.)

My summary of the press conference: "I built a phone and its has problems, but you're obsessing way too much over them. I'm going to give you a placating gift so you'll stop yelling at me. Eventually, I'll come out with a new phone that'll have a new antenna design. To be frank, those critical internet buttholes, especially those in the media, should stop talking shiz about my company or my awesome phone, of which I've sold 3M. Besides, every phone has this problem where calls are dropped if you hold them too tight with your left hand. Also, I've been lying to my customers this entire time about their signal strength. What you think is full bars, is in fact a trick [by me to convince you that your AT&T network isn't as bad as it really is]."

I went to the Dadeland Apple store to use their iPhone 4's while I waited for my girlfriend's lunch break. I was able to reproduce the death grip on the in-store model quite easily. I tried duplicating that effect on my iPhone 3G; nothing happened. My $0.02, I just can't believe a company that spends this much on R&D missed the fact that their antenna design made their new phone more susceptible to poor signal strength. Given the evidence, either their engineers missed this problem or Apple said "fug it, consumers will buy whatever I tell them, bad antenna or not." This problem is real. It may not be the "this'll bring down the empire of the iPhone" moment Android fans think it is, but there is a real engineering problem that needs to be solved in the next generation of iPhone.

I don't think "antennagate" will keep me from buying an iPhone 4, for the record. I'll just use a case. I have bluetooth in my car. The other features of the phone are worth the inconvenience of occasional signal problems.

And what's happening Sep 30th that made Apple establish that date as the cutoff for a free case?

Probably the end of their financial quarter.

I think they made a pretty convincing case that the problem has to do with antenna design in general and not the iPhone 4 in specific. We've been on the road to this point ever since cell phones stopped using external antenna bumps. I also found Spencer Webb's comments informative.

I feel like the conference could have been a little less defensive, but ultimately people will take the free cases and be happy.

And then what? The hardware problem will still be there.

I'm not convinced its ubiquitous to all designs, or at least to the degree presented on the iPhone 4. My iPhone 3G has NONE of the death grip issues when used in the same area (Apple Store) as an iPhone 4 experiencing death grip issues.

My 3Gs DEFINITELY loses bars when I death grip it. My iPhone4 does not. Area? Luck? ******ation? Who knows... I'll gladly take that free bumper though...

There's not much they can do about that short of a phone redesign, moving the antenna back inside the case. And even then, you still get the problem depending on how you hold the phone.

There are Youtube videos demonstrating it happening to the 3G and 3GS. You can also look at the Anandtech articles I've linked to where they discuss the degree of attenuation created by performing a Death Grip on non-Apple phones.

Went over this earlier in the thread. The latest Verizon rumors are almost assuredly put out by Verizon to keep current customers from jumping ship.

Relevant fact: Apple approached Verizon to be the exclusive carrier of the iPhone back in 2007. But Verizon wasn't willing to make the backend changes necessary to support Visual Voicemail, and they balked when Apple demanded a lack of co-branding on the phone and exemption from bundling of Verizon's various "services," like V-Cast.

One big reason why Verizon has been pushing the Droid brand is to create leverage in any possible negotiations with Apple. They simply aren't as willing a partner as AT&T.

So, long answer: probably, but don't let Verizon rumors prevent you from getting an iPhone today, if you want it. There's simply no predictable timeframe for a Verizon iPhone. It could happen tomorrow or never. Apple doesn't seem to be in a big rush to divorce from AT&T.

The reason for the white iPhone 4's delay: the supplier can't get the color right.

Was going to buy one yesterday, as I had an extra $2000 to spend. Was pretty disappointed to see that no stores are stocking the phones, and the only way to get one is to order it, and probably wait 3 weeks. Yeah, I'm not doing that. I'll wait another month I guess and see if they start shipping to stores again.

visual voicemail was only a small part of the problem from what I have heard. Everything from putting the Verizon logo to having the phones serviced by Verizon in store technicians was supposedly an issue. I know VZW didn't want the battery being strictly internal. Long and short is I don't expect to see a Verizon iPhone until 4g is fully launched because the chip set cdma phones require is different from gsm. It's also a bit larger meaning the phone will probably need a redesign. And even then I'm not sure when it will happen.

I think I have decided to go with a Samsung Captivate. AT&T's hate of Android continues as it has locked the phone down so that you can only install apps from the Market. It also has a ton of bloatware. This is something that rooting the phone will fix however.

Apple is sending out an iPhone satisfaction survey to apparently random customers. This is big in that Apple never does this sort of thing. They don't use focus groups during product development, and they're usually content to use sales figures and revenue as a determining factor in customer satisfaction.

I think they're trying to build up positive ammo for their quarterly earnings conference call.

Steve Jobs just took a **** on all the haters:

    http://content.usatoday.com/communi...pple-earnings-surge-despite-iphone-4-issues/1

I find it funny that I barely know anyone in real life with an iPhone 4 that has reception issues that effect their usability. I would venture to guess a lot of the noise created on the internet was done by people who wished to short AAPL.

I've been pointing this out for a while. The Death Grip's most dramatic effect was on the bar count of an iPhone 4, not necessarily the real signal strength. You can still use the phone in the Death Grip because the external antenna results in a better signal even during attenuation.

The people I've seen most doggedly hyping up the Death Grip are people who were predisposed to hate Apple in the first place, like Microsoft fans. (Yes, they exist.)

And they've dropped plans to charge for calls placed over 3G.

You Verizon iPhone guys are going to be disappointed: T-Mobile USA and Apple are rumored to be in advanced negotiations to bring the iPhone to T-Mo in Q3 (July through September) of this year.

Just a rumor, but makes so much more sense than the Verizon rumors. Apple doesn't have to create a second piece of hardware, for starters.

As far as I know, just install the app, open it, log in, and you're good.

    Congrats. You'll love it.

I JUST switched from t-mobile on Sunday to get this phone. Mam, should I switch back as soon as the iPhone is available with tmobile? I think there is a 90 day remorse clause in California for service contracts... But how would that affect the phone they sold me? Could I return it too or would I be stuck owing At&T the difference between the discounted rate and full price since I cancelled the two-year contract?

Or am I better off with AT&T anyways?

My main concerns w AT&T Instead of tmobile is that I'll run WAY over the 2gig data limit monthly and that At&t will have more dropped calls. Are those big problems for other peeps who use AT&T here?

I think you're better off with AT&T, despite the complaints. T-Mobile's network is not better than AT&T's, it just happens to use the same cellular technology, which is what makes an iPhone 4 on T-Mobile possible without having to create an alternate model with a different cellular radio.

mor and I are grandfathered in with unlimited data plans, but if you believe AT&T, 97+% of iPhone customers don't go over 2GB. You shouldn't have a problem unless you're an enormous data whore, in which case it might be worth it to keep an eye on this rumor. If true, it doesn't necessarily mean T-Mobile will offer unlimited data.

    iPhone 4.

T-Mo actually uses a different frequency range than AT&T. Newer iPhones (3GS and iPhone 4, IIRC) have a different cellular radio which handles all GSM frequencies, which makes selling the iPhone 4 on T-Mo really easy.

There's also a business aspect here: if you believe that Verizon is pushing Droid bigtime (remember, they own the Droid brand, not Motorola) to get some sort of "we don't REALLY need you" leverage over Apple, Apple can cite T-Mobile and say the same thing back.

Either way, I think Apple is really just counting down the days until LTE becomes the new standard, and they can just sell one iPhone and have it work on every network in the world.
