Bingo!!!!!! They aren't signing these guys to totally replace Merling.
I touched on it earlier in the thread that Odrick isn't quite what they thought he would be. We have heard about all the mental errors. I have to say it would be a damn shame if Odrick never pans out and we passed on a potential Lamar Woodley type like Brandon Graham or another potentially good OLB prospect in Jerry Hughes.
I have a bad feeling about all of this

Odrick was plan B. We wanted Dan Williams but Arizona snatched him before us. Parcells blew up in the warroom when Arizona's pick was announced. I'm not too worried about Odrick though. He may or may not be ready this year but I think he'll be a good player for us.

how many players make a great impact as rookies ?
not many, usually takes a couple of years
to get up to speed & contribute to expectation

the trenches have always come first in Parcells world
nothing to be surprised @ w/the acquisition of another
dependable, big, powerful, proven defensive linesman

this guy could only become more Parcellian if he had blue eyes

After the merling disaster I should at least be entitled to show some concern. I wasn't happy about the pick initially and now I'm a little paranoid that something is already going on with Odrick. I hope I'm wrong but I my gut tells me I'm not. I'll be patient but you either have it or not at that value. I hope he does.

What the hell? Some of you need to stop over thinking and let camp START. From all that i've heard (which doesnt count for jack POOP) is that Odrick has been nearly unblockable!

Everyone needs to stop looking too far into this. It looks like they are grabbing solid vets that can play in our system after the phsyco Merling injured himself beating his g/f.

Let camp start. Just wait to hear all the crappy beat reporters' reports and blogs before we make any outlandish remarks. Then make all your crazy predictions about how Hartline looked over weight, maybe he's in trouble again! or Boy Henne is underthrowing passes, maybe hes taking his offseason for granted. You dont have long to wait. In fact it starts tomorrow...................Sorry for the rant. I just cant take it anymore.

Hell I still think it's a bit premature to call Merling a "disaster". Should he be better..absolutely.

He showed ok his rookie season, and sat behind Starks who was probably the best 3-4 DE in the league last year. 3-4 DE's usually don't get monster stats anyway.

I can understand the concern, but no need jump off any cliffs yet.

I like the signing. IMO Grant was a very good player just two seasons ago although he struggled last season and is coming off the injury. I think the risk/reward ratio is pretty favorable. I also see that 32 years old as the cut off for the vets they like to bring in. There can be exceptions of course, but it seems like a general guideline.

I don't agree that this signals any displeasure with Odrick. Odrick was supposed to be the back-up this year anyways. I do think that it is bad news for Merling's chances of being part of any long term plans (not that it was a big surprise) and that it hurts McDaniel's chances. My guess is that they see Douglas and Grant as at least potential upgrades over McDaniel and nothing more.

I don't think AD was ever in their plans. He's over that apparent age cut-off, hasn't been good for a couple of years and most importantly, doesn't seem to have the right attitude. He's the guy who seems likely to complain about a minimum contract, coming off the bench and playing STs. The one thing he does have is familiarity with Nolan. If I were Sparano, I'd see him as a likely headache and avoid him at all costs.

This tragic case wasn't enough to keep the Super Bowl Champion Saints from playing him last year. The tragedy occurred in 2008; so I assume this was known during the 09 season.

I think CK does makes some valid and great points.

About Odrick and mental mistakes, can someone link me to a source or a post about it? In general isn't the D Line position the simplest in terms of alignment and assignment to play? I always understood that the mental game for the LB's and DB's is much more strenuous than DL. If Odrick doesn't know where to line up the linebackers can help him. Surely to god the coaching staff can teach the kid his assignment on a given play. Of course I could be missing something, probably am. Not operating on a good nights rest :).

excellent point about the age connection with this front office..I don't think they mind at all signing 32 year old players, if a man take's his training serious in the offseason 32 is a prime year....I think the Patriots follow the same theory.

I'm more inclined to believe there was no "blow up" by Parcells. I'm sure he's been through enough drafts and has had enough picks scooped in front of him to react that way.

And yet they don't need bodies at OLB, where they only have Koa Misi, Cameron Wake and Charlie Anderson.

I take that with a grain of salt this early in a guy's career and without any pads on yet. Doesn't mean they made a mistake, doesn't mean Odrick is going to be a bad player in 2010, let along the rest of his career.

However, there is no denying that somehow Koa Misi has managed to impress them enough NOT to be adding 'more bodies' and yet Jared Odrick hasn't.

And if you don't think there's constant evaluation going on with these guys in the weight room, the class room, and on the practice field, you're kidding yourself.

Then why did Miami tell Randy Starks that he was moving to Nose Tackle BEFORE the draft?

The Dan Williams stuff was a smoke screen, if not a complete media projection to begin with. The Dolphins were not dumb enough to take him. And if I knew that Arizona would take Williams if he got to #26, you can bet they were aware they might as well.

People don't understand, what I'm saying is not an indictment of Jared Odrick. Rookies are rookies, and trench rookies are especially at a disadvantage before they've had time to develop their NFL muscles, NFL stamina, and especially if they're making a transition from one style of line play to another style.

I'm just saying it's clear. Maybe you add a Marques Douglas in the wake of a Merling injury. But you don't also add a Charles Grant unless you're not all that confident in what a ROOKIE Jared Odrick is going to give you.

I never saw that "report" during the draft.

Fact of the matter is though, they told Randy Starks before the draft that he was moving to Nose Tackle, and told him to shut up about it.

Why would they do that if Dan Williams was Plan A?

I am in agreement with you here. Just wanted to point out that I think Misi's athletic ability stands out. He moves very, very well IMO. Tough not to get that out on the field. I think that, combined with the fact that he's a bright guy, makes him a legitimate player for this team in 2010.

This corroborates what Jeff Ireland seemed to imply when he's talked about the switch of Starks to NT. He said the reason he didn't say anything about it during his post-Day One press conference was because they were still working out some things and didn't want to tip their hand in the 2nd round. This fits, I think he wanted teams to think that guys like Mount Cody and Linval Joseph were still targets. If I were Jeff Ireland and I really wanted Koa Misi, I wouldn't have tipped my hand after Day One either. The Dolphins turned in the card for Koa Misi like within a minute, it was extremely quick.

I agree. If you watch his workouts at the combine it's pretty sick.
    http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-videos/09000d5d8177fa3a/2010-Draft-Vignettes-Koa-Misi-Utah

The things they jumped out to me is his balance while he is moving and his ability to quickly change directions. But I am far from a scout so take this with a HUGE grain of salt.

I will worry about Odrick once the final roster is decided. If they keep all these veterans AND Langford is still the starting LE then I would be a bit concerned. But I am just not there yet.

Oh and another thing, if Parcells really wanted Dan Williams, then the only time he would have "flipped out" is when some saucy tart who owns like 1% of the team starts talking about him.

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/04/22/dolphins-owner-wants-dan-williams/

Do you honestly think Parcells would've let her spout off like that about the guy they are really targeting, ESPECIALLY if they're trying to trade down and still get him?

We're talking about a part time owner that is there basically for name value and she's about to go on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, I mean...I'm pretty sure someone on the Dolphins briefed her on what things it was OK to talk about and what not to talk about. And if not, the one thing I could guarantee is that whoever Jennifer Lopez likes for the Dolphins is not who they like.
