Kinda surpirsed by Mike here, he is a smart guy, he gets it, and he knows football. I think if you watched Ted Ginn here in Miami at all, you ought to know there was every opportunity for Ted to be a receiver, THE receiver, and not just a special teams player. Do you think he is trying to take some pressure off him?? I dont get the dig attempt, because it isnt true. Or am I just reading into it too much?? Ted Ginn, WR, 49ers A '07 first-round pick of the Dolphins, Ginn was a bust in Miami as a receiver/returner. Once the Dolphins acquired Brandon Marshall, they were willing to trade Ginn for a fifth-round draft pick. Niners coach Mike Singletary says Ginn can add something to the team's receiving corps. "He can help our offense significantly by just continuing to perfect his skills and really work at the craft of being a wideout and not just a special teams guy," Singletary said. http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/38418147/ns/sports-nfl/
Ted Ginn can be a WR, he received far to much blame here. There he doesn’t have to live up to being a top ten pick. If he contributes as a 3rd wideout he is a success there. Here, not so much because of the expectations that go with his draft position. If he plays like he did the last 1/3rd of last season he will help them a lot.
I think you're reading too much into it. IMO Singletary looks at Ginn and still sees a raw WR. Ginn was incredibly raw when he was drafted so that really isn't all that surprising. I also don't see Ginn as having natural hands. You still see him reach for the ball with his hands in the wrong position and unevenly. Even though by all accounts he is a hard worker, he's a guy who will take at least five years to become polished as a WR. Now he'll have value and can contribute as a WR now, but he won't reach his Joey Galloway type potential until at least year 5.
That's just talking in circles code for: "You suck the big one Ginn! 3 years in the NFL and you still need to learn s#!t?! You're nothing more than a special teamer unless you can prove otherwise. Why'd we waste a draft pick!" or something like that.......
Ridiculous logic. Wait till he starts running out of bounds to avoid contact Do you really think TG will be less scared because the expectations are different?
I would venture that the 49ers FO knows a little more than the average pissed off jaded Dolphins FAN..... Ginns issues were/are mental not physical....If he gets his head on straight he will be a very servicable WR and a pro bowl return man.
There are 2 things that prevent Ginn from being a receiver. He avoids contact and he can't catch balls consistently. I think the "not being able to catch" problem stems from being afraid of contact. I think if he could ever overcome the fear of being hit, that he could then step up his game. I almost forgot his route running.........make that 3 things that prevent him from being a good receiver.
Hmmm here is some irony.... Remember the movie "life" Their was a talented baseball player who had mental issues they nicknamed him Cant-Get-Right... Sound familiar? Well look at this.. Cant get right: Ted Ginn:
Please explain how a pro football player overcomes fear. Did you not follow Chris Chambers. After Kennoy Kennedy laid the wood on him he was never the same. Of course it is mental.
The fear of contact stuff is overblown...Marvin Harrison got down every chance he got, Wes Welker falls to the ground alot also...its not "manly" to take unnecesaary hits to the head.... His drops were only an issue in 09 so yea it is a mental thing, and if he overcomes it he will be a borderline 1,000 yd WR
Sure guys get down but after they make sure they catch the football. Ginn and 1,000 yards in the same sentence.
Did you read what a wrote? I think if he plays like he did the last third of the season for us, the Niners will be very happy with trading a 5th for him. Regardless of this perceived fear.
Couldn't agree more! Very evident with both the missed catch against the Colts and the bobble INT against NO and except the first few games with Henne as the starter his catch count was not bad. Plus though few will admin at the beginging of the 09 season, after Ginn's 08 year the talk on this very board was of the expection that ginn was going to have a 1000 yard season because of his growth in 08.
Fear of being hit? Hmm, I don't think so. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35fxXOXBrA8&feature=related"]YouTube- Ted Ginn Jr. highlights vs bills[/ame]
It's like Ted Ginn's ghost haunts the place, let it go. Notice, even Ginn's ghost has his hands in typical Ted Ginn going over the middle position...
i view ginn's performance this year in san fran as indicative of whether we got rid of him to soon or not. this wouldve been his last year to prove himself for me. if he gets 800 yds receiving this year or more then i say we blew it. if he gets less than i say we made a good move.
For me, all purpose yards, when Ginn has been "the" Returner he cracks 2000k yards, and typically scores at least one TD, so around 600 yds receiving and 1,400 yds in returns and at least 1 return TD. To me if we let that production go for a 5th rd pick Irish got hosed.
That's not true. 2+ catches a game and what he brings as a returner for a 5th? That's a good trade for the Niners. If he develops it's going to be a great trade for the Niners. At the same time, only 2+ catches a game for a top 10 pick in his third year... Not so great. As a Miami Dolphins draft pick he is a bust. He could turn out to be a steal for the Niners, and at the very least I see him as a fair value trade for them.
Still don't understand how it was a good move. We got rid of a solid kick returner and failed to replace him. Simple as that. The draft pick was spent. The salary was spent. He was on the team - use him for what he IS good at and see if he develops into anything else. A 5th round pick isn't worth the two Jets games from last year. Just don't force the ball to him. Throw it to him deep 2-3 times a game and leave him on the sidelines the rest. (Before people argue that he wasn't a solid kick returner - I realize he is boom or bust, but I view KR as the one position where boom or bust is a good thing. One 45 yard return is worth a lot more than 4-5 extra yards on the other returns.)
Good KR's don't have as many inside your own 20 kick returns as Ginn........ which is a really bad thing. We'll do fine with one of the young guys we currently have... And please.....you guys need to stop giving him BOTH Jets games. He scored once.
He scored three times in those two games? Or is your point he only scored once in the Monday night game so doesn't deserve credit for the whole game? I'll give you that - though it was still a spectacular play. As for kickoff returns, I think his rate of returns under 20 yds is a misconception. Over 65% of his KR were for 20 yards or more. Cribbs was 69%, Harvin was 64% (those are the guys with multiple TD returns.) The guys with a higher percentage of returns more than 20 yards almost all mirror Ginn in terms of avg per return (Amendola, Charles, Sproles). And no matter WHO we throw back there, I hope we put more of an emphasis on blocking. Whether it was Cobbs or Ginn, they both always had to make their first move well before most return units (resulting in a lot of returns inside 20). Seems like an area we have struggled at for a few years now.
Funny this scared horrible route running little man URINED all over the leagues best CB (and his 2 friends) on a 58 yd TD.
