will the new & improved (proven?) Jason Allen get a legitimate shot @ the defensive backfield in 2010?
    http://thefinsiders.com/blog/defense-fits-allen/
according to reports he's had an excellent training camp & "been around the ball more than any other player." jason claims the new defense is a better fit for his game.
he made the first solids steps on SpecialTeams & in defensive packages. is he now ready to compete for a start in the backfield
    ?

I think he needs to show it pre-season games before I'm buying in.

he has always had the physical skills to play, it's the mental "shellshock" he has to overcome. Hopefully Nolan can help him work through it. It already sounds as if Nolan has done a good job of making him feel he has plenty to contribute to the scheme but this is a trial under fire. He has to prove it when it counts, on the field.

the one thing to keep in mind with jason is he was stuck in neutral till parcells and company came in. since then he's improved every year. Saban really screwed him up IMO but I think Parccells and the boys have salvaged him to some extent. Dont really know how good he is but he was adequate last year and if he improved a little more he might actually become - gasp- good.

    Friend Georgia Fin:
    I agree.
if Jason Allen were to make the next step w/ Coach Nolan it would be a big investment (#1 pick) finally paying off

this is the time for him to step up.

would like to see Jason give Clemons a run for his money & Will Allen to start over Smith.
desperately need experience in our last line of defense.

I'll admit I've openly dogged the guy on this site but he hasn't had a fair shake to catch on at a single position. At least on ST his role has been consistant and it has shown in his improvement. Would love to have him develop and fall in with Davis and Smith in our Secondary for a loing time to come.

IMO J. Allen is a physical prototype, but had a tendency to make bone-headed decisions. I have been saying for years that he will eventually get it and be a pretty good player. I just never thought he'd stick around long enough for that to happen in Miami. I thought last year he rose to the level of 'adequate', particularly as a third or fourth CB. I also like what he brings on STs. Carroll has really flashed and may surpass him this year, but IMO we should keep him as a fourth or fifth CB. And if his progress continues he may move past 'adequate' to 'good'. Additionally, I like my fourth and fifth CBs to be very versatile (potential S fill-ins) and contribute heavily on STs. Both J. Allen and Carroll provide that.

That's Jason Allen in a nutshell for me. It's painful to watch the guy make a great play, then follow it up with a stupid one. I remember JT returning an INT for a TD vs Chicago one season with Jason Allen running interference in front of him, and Allen absolutely planted one poor guy like a ****ing rose bush. A highlight-reel-type block, which there aren't very many of. If we had that guy every down... he'd be another Polamalu.

if he gets his head straight he can be a good benefit to our defense. theres a reason (besides the $$) this front office has held onto him.......never heard a "jason allen may be getting cut" rumor swirling. the guy can maybe help us....lets see.

I know when i go to phins games, hes always jumping around pumping up the crowd before kickoff and everything. love the enthusiasm.

Kid is super talented, and HAS made plays when on the field. I blame our defensive staff, not him. If Nolan can't vet greatness out of him I give up though.

Give it a rest man. JA is a better CB than he is a S. You really want Jason as the last line of defense LOL. He doesn't have the range for that at all. Like I said leave him at corner. It would be stupid to move him again. As for Sean Smith you keep him as your starting CB and let him develop. We are better off with veteran Will Allen at the nickel.

From the beginning of his career, after watching one training camp, I went on the record and said I believe his skillset is a better fit for corner. His body and frame scared me at safety, especially the way he threw it around back there..

Wouldn't it be nice if one of our lost high round draft picks stepped up for a change and played like one? It would be like christmas coming early.

His size and speed combination has alway's been very interesting at corner..

    Clemons..Bell.. W Allen...Davis... J Allen..Smith......all fast players....

Amazing all the excuses for Jason Allen
even as far as blaming the defensive staffs

Is this the new era of blaming everyone else except the person responsible...I guess the answer is YES

that's true, he's had enough time to flash as a high first round pick should, and he hasn't.....at this point it's a reclamation project, it's like we have accepted this high first rounder as a special teams player....if he can manage his way into the rotation with deserved quality play, than its something we didn't expect this year...

These aren't excuses. It is what it is. J. Allen shouldn't have been taken as high. I know he wasn't on my wish list for that draft. But then the coaching staffs took a player with poor learning ability and had him learn multiple positions. It's fairly obvious that that would slow down any player's development. So yes, J.A. was taken too high, but the coaching staffs also failed to put him in the best situation to succeed. Acknowledging that isn't excuse making. It's just a realistic assessment of what we have.

The "New" Jason Allen, Oh Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Compaired to the hate heaped on our 2007 #9 pick who byw at the very least scored a few TD's before he was run out on a rail at the start of his forth year this # 16 pick guy has been given a cake walk by most in Fins Nation.

He just doesn't "GET" it and has had four plus years to do so, dear Lord just let it go, for crying out loud!!!:wink2:

Need to see all our players after 4 preseason games....we'll have a good grip on projection's then, whether it be the rookies were seeing for the first time, or the veterans trying to step up their game. time to watch some football.

You have to develop young players. We don't know how long Will Allen will be here or if he can stay healthy. There comes a time when a role has to be reduced to start young talent. Everyone gives Smith grief and are quick to forget he was a rookie. Will Allen spent a few seasons here where he couldn't catch the football to make int's so don't play the no int angle.

Jason Allen has indeed been a huge disappointment for the high draft pick he cost us, but he never gave up, always did what he was asked, and has never lacked the physical tools to be a solid player. I would LOVE to see Nolan turn him into a solid Db for us and don't care where, I would leave that up to Nolan completely.

This FO obviously has felt strongly enough about JA's skill set to keep him around, now lets see him finally give us a return for that first rounder.

    we'll know soon enough...
Nolan comes in & everyone is judged anew
his only interest is to coach up the defense
finding the best possible talent on the roster
he'll figure out if Jason is a CB or FS
a starter or a backup on this new defense
all Nolan will be interested in is the now

    & consistently winning games

Allen has actually made some plays at Safety and none as a Cb. He has plenty of range to play either position. That's not the problem. The problem has been his technique and he's had huge mental lapses. He is fast, with decent size but thats been about it.

I'd have loved to see them put him at Safety and keep him there. He was making some strides there for once in his career, and then they yanked him back to Cb...

That's a good way to look at it as far as developing players but he can develop quite nicely by playing the Nickle. Ask Pat Surtain that one.

I just want the best player to play and it will be hard for one of them to beat out a healthy Will Allen.

I agree. I always thought he was a better S prospect. But the key is he has to be in a FS role with limited decisions. Pretty much what they're doing with Clemons this year. Allen is a solid tackler with good size and speed. That's exactly the type of guy you want as the last line of defense assuming you can keep the mental mistakes to a minimum.

Yes, but we're not a team who has zero chance of contending like Cleveland. You're approach is foolish if we're serious about winning! You don't compromise your team's success to develop a player IF you have another player who is better and more reliable. PERIOD! If Will is the better corner come game 1, then he's who we start. Smith will still develop, grow, learn, and get stronger if he's not a starter. To think that not starting would halt his development is absurd.

Nolan has to find a solution w/ the current roster. it is what it is... the rubber is about to meet the road

    JA "doesn't have the range"?

Dude, the guy is a legit 4.4 if not faster player, physically there is nothing JA cannot do, his problem is from the neck up.

I'd like to see JA and Carroll as the back end of the Db rotation simply because they bring so much speed to the defense.

    will allen is more reliable?
last time i checked he is coming off of a serious knee injury that put him on ir last season
    how is that for reliable
that is what is absurd is people automatically assume he will be the player that he previously was
you name him a starter just because he is will allen is foolish which is the mindset of your post. then you kill the young kids confidence and are left with a vet who may never stay healthy.
