I can see why Berkman and Oswalt couldn't get out of Houston quickly enough. What a bunch of chokers. Wags and the Braves were ready to hand the Astros today's game but the Astros refuse to pull a victory from the jaws of defeat. Then the Chokers, errrr, I mean the Astros, serve up a grand slam to McCann and laid down as usual. Pedro Feliz also made a huge error for the Stros late in the 10th....one of the reasons his butt was kicked out of Philly. Better get well beating up on the Little Sisters of the Poor Braves fans!!! :wink2:

The Astros are certainly not contenders but they are scrappy and had been scoring a lot of runs since the break. It was our turn to have a 'weak' opponent in a series anyway. No reason for the Phillies to hog them all. I can't believe you'd even mention a Houston error being that Atlanta committed a million in the series. You can call them chokers but they're not the only guys to have their hearts broken this season by Brooks Conrad and Brian McCann. Don't worry, I'm sure your Phillies will get a chance too.

Imho Houston is a young and up and coming team, they have a good mix of talent and pitching and they do not give up at bats..you earn everything against that team.

To me, the Braves won last night but only after the Astros had tied it late in the game, today it went into the top of the 10th before Atlanta broke the game open, that team doesn't lay down.

Houston is young but are not very good. Certainly not up and coming.

What team are you watching? The Astros are a bad baseball team and that was even before they traded Oswalt and Berkman.

Up and coming or crap the fact remains that they had been scoring an average of six runs a game since the All-Star break. So they were playing over their heads when Atlanta came to town. It was far from an automatic series win. But I have to say the Astros had more hits on bloopers, choppers, and flares in that series than I think I've ever seen in my life. That poor rookie pitcher Mike Minor pitched well but was robbed of a chance to win by stupid flare hits.

Hehe..poor Mike Minor, he was 0-19 in the minor leagues this yr, he has a perfectly good swing and a run should have scored..but he got put out from Right Field.

Chipper is done for the year, tore his ACL and needs to get it fixed asap. This is a big blow for the Braves. I wonder if they thought about possibly moving Glaus back to 3rd and calling up Freeman? Not sure if Glaus could even play 3rd at this point or if they feel Freeman is ready. I'm sure there are some options available on waivers if they can get to the Braves or clear outright. Someone like Ty Wiggington (although I doubt he'll clear) or Mike Lowell (if Boston would trade him now with Youkilis out for the year).

I also wonder if this is the end of Chipper's playing career too.

Yeah too bad for Chipper, loved that guy....great ballplayer

According to Mark Bowman of MLB.com, Chipper Jones (knee) has informed some close friends that he has a torn ligament in his left knee and will miss the rest of the season.

Jones learned of the tear after an MRI exam Thursday morning. When asked if it was a complete tear, the veteran third baseman revealed that it was "stretched" and that he would likely need surgery. Jones has hinted at retirement already, so it's very possible that this could be the end for him. If so, he'll go down as one of the most underrated third baseman and switch-hitters to ever play the game.

This is terrible news. I think we've seen Chipper's last game honestly. He had been tearing it up at the plate as well. It won't be right in Atlanta without him around. When Prado comes back they can probably just put Infante at third for a while. It helps having an All-star utility guy that can play almost every position. I think Prado should be back pretty soon. Brooks can be a stopgap until then.

Possibly his last game, but I'm tending to doubt it, Chipper last play in MLB was in August?

Not seeing it, and he was swinging the stick well.

I think you are right about Infante, but I'd like Conrad to see some playing time as well, he is a great pinch hitter this year but he seems to be having a great season.

Chipper is a definite Hall of Famer. Injuries will play a big part in this year's NL East with Chipper and Prado out for the Braves, and Howard, Utley and Victorino out for the Phillies. Philly should get Victorino back this weekend. It will be a great final six weeks.

bad news for certain, but when Prado returns, i think the Braves will be ok, between him, Conrad, and Infante.

have been hearing Freeman is tearing it up since the All Star break in Gwinnette. so maybe that is an option, but i don't see Glaus playing third and staying healthy.

really stinks to lose Medlen's productivity and now Chipper since the trade deadline.

Injuries are hitting hard but both teams are dealing with it admirably. Should be an exciting race to the end.

I truly hope Chipper does give it one more go but if he doesn't make it back this season I'm not sure he will. Especially with Bobby gone next year.

ESPN is reporting that Medlen will need Tommy Johns surgery. This is a pretty big blow to the rotation. It seems like everything has to be the worst case scenario lately.

Joe Torre blows another one...well this time it was Kuo and not Fat Broxton. How many more last at bat wins are the Braves going to get?????? Ahhh well, no Dodgers in this year's playoffs. Yankees lost again so the night isn't a total loss.

That will work out, especially with Jurgens back.

Bravos win the walk off, but there is still a long way to go in the season.

A couple years ago (maybe it was last year) on this site I broke down why the Braves were so bad, and it was because they were horrible on the late innings. Their bullpen was bad, and they had no clutch hitting. Basically it was a crap shoot after the 6th inning, with the Braves losing most of the time.

This year? Completely different. This is from DOB of the Atlanta Journal Constitution:

The Braves are like the Rockies were in 2007, where they just kept winning and find ways to come back over and over at the end. Looks like the Braves and Phillies are both on a nice streak and the Mets have faded fast.....Phillies lead the wild card so maybe both teams will make the playoffs....San Diego is pulling away in the NL West and the Cards/Reds are battling for the Central.

And of course after I post that little tidbit they go out and score 10 runs from the 6th inning on. I love this ****ing team.

Word is the Braves are very close to trading for Derrek Lee. No word on who they have to give up but I'm guessing not much at all as the Cubs just want the money off the books. Is Lee really that big of an upgrade over Glaus? But hey as long as they don't have to give up anyting it's worth the shot.

The Cards v Reds race is great for baseball, those are two baseball towns but the Reds haven't been good in yrs.

That brawl earlier in the yr helps as well..

Saw that as well. I guess it's still a rumor at this point, but interesting nonetheless. I'd rather have A-Ramirez if I was gonna have anyone from that team.

Glaus has hurt us defensively, and appears to be running out of gas. Not that D-Lee has torn it up this season though.

The ONLY thing I can think of is them moving Glaus to 3rd. Maybe they'd like to move Infante back into a utility role, but dammit he's killed it in the leadoff spot lately.

I'm really kinda miffed on this if it's true.

The more I think about it, the more I think Lee would be a replacement for Glaus. Maybe they DL him, try and get him healthy. Although Lee has a bad back I believe. My guess is D-Lee would definitely waive his no-trade. He's always liked Atlanta and Bobby Cox.

I could have sworen I heard the Braves had no plans of moving Glaus to 3rd, since they didn't think he could handle the position at this stage in his career. the problem with getting Aramis Ramirez is that he's going to make a lot of money next year and I'm not sure how well he'd do in a pitchers park in Atlanta. Plus Chipper claims he's going to come back next year, which the Braves could always move him to 1st if they do end up with Ramirez.

    .

The Lee thing is an actual thing. They must really think he's (Glaus) done. I heard Lee is a type B FA, so we'll let him walk after this year and see what Freeman has next year.

Any team would be nuts to offer him artibiration and risk him accepting and having to pay $15 million or more for an extra draft pick.

I could see it if he performs well with Atlanta. It's unlikely, but possible. As long as their are Omar Minaya's and Ruben Amaro's and whoever the hell the Astros GM is, there will be bad moves made.

I don't believe Lee has a vesting option though. That's one of the reasons the A-Ramirez talks fell through (from what I read).

I live 600 miles or so from Turner Field now, bummer. At least they'll be nationally televised in the playoffs. I heard something about Chipper wanting to come back next season. I don't blame him for not wanting his career to end with an ACL injury. I expected him to retire though. I hope it works out.

I didn't live in Atlanta, I lived in Augusta, but yeah pretty much. I am no longer in driving distance of the Ted or in a Braves regional television viewing area. I came up here for a job, it was too good to turn down. What may be even worse than missing the Braves though may be all of the Ravens fans up here.

My Gawd, when will these last-at-bat walk off wins come to an end??? :tantrum:

You Brave's fans have wonder whether all these last second wins will eventually even out and you will end up on the short end. Ahhh well, another Phillies beat down of the Giants. 2 games up in the WC now for the Phillies. It's going to be an interesting finish.

They do end up on the short end sometimes, just not at home. They are ridiculously good at home for some reason. That's why that homefield advantage McCann won for us could end up being huge. But there is still a lot of work to do to get to that point.
