I don't understand how Pompeii can surmise that Chris Long is a "single" (in baseball terminology) while Vernon Gholston is a possible "home run".
I don't get it either. For my money, Gholston is most likely to "hit into a double play" but that's just me. I don't buy the ceiling limitations some of these analysts have put on Long while proclaiming that the sky is the limit for Gholston. It's clear that "sky is the limit" tag has come to all of them while gawking at Gholston's biceps in picutures and we all know exactly how little that body build does for a player when the whistle blows. It's all about having strength, technique and football instincts. The latter 2 I've seen many point out as problems in Gholston's game.
"I'm not really one to take a lot of risks. I like going after guys that fit what we do, but at the end of the day you're rolling the dice."... Jeff Ireland
What Gholston lacks is Football skills. Right now he is a better athlete than football player. Many believe as do I Chris Long has reached his limit. I think Chris Long is going to be a solid player at the next level, very consistent. But I feel Gholston could be the best player of the class or he could be the next Mike Mamula. Its all who the front office likes more.
For those of you who believe that C. Long has hit his limit, ceiling, whatever you want to call it - why? What are you making that determination with? BKing - regarding Gholston; a better athlete than football player?...what do you mean? One of his strengths is his tackling ability. It's also said that he's "versatile and can play more than one position". Also....why are some of you projecting C.Long as an OLB? Hasn't he played 3-4 DE his whole career? To me it makes more sense for him to gain 20-25 lbs and continue to play as a down DE.
Why I say that is because get guys like DRC, Gholston, Mayo, and Clady all have one thing in comming they have a ton of upside. Their all super athletic and haven't reached their potential like some guys like Jake, and Chris Long. Why I say that is Gholston relies on his Athletic ability when he plays football. If he had the technique he could really use those talents to use. Chris Long has played 3-4 End and OLB but has gotten eaten up as a 3-4 end. Otah swallowed him up when they played. Chris Long plays much better in a 4-3 end. I think he can play OLB but its always a risk.
