every year there are two types of fans during the preseason.

    1) the fans who think their team is great because they're doing great in preseason.
    2) the fans who think their team is crap because they look flat in pre-season.

Right now, a lot of you are the latter. Miami didn't look very good, but I can tell you there are several playoff teams every year who don't look very good in preseason. Please, don't read too much into Marshall dropping passes in the rain. He has over 300 receptions in 3 years. The guy can catch ball. Relax. Henne was 5-11 for 19 yds, but as people have said, he should have been 8-11 with 60+ yds. Again, Marshall will catch those in the regular season.

We are an AWFUL preseason team. Think about it. We have a D Coordinator whose calling card is crazy blitzes. Blitzes we can't run in preseason. Our offense uses an entire formation (Wildcat) that we normally don't use in preseason. I know some of you are hoping we don't run it anymore but if last night showed us anything, it was that Ronnies ready to carry the team again. (He made a pretty big statement last night just by being on the field and running hard)

Just keep in mind, being bad in preseason and being good in preseason aren't very indicative of anything.

I would rather look flat in the preseason and hit the ground running in the regular season. The last two regular season starts have been horrible.

Didn't we go 4-0 last preseason? Counted for didly in the actual season.

I always thought the preseason was for evaluating the talent on your team and see if a rook might be up for the speed of an NFL game.

Colts have won 5 preseason games since 2005 per the announcers for today's game.

What does bother me is the fact Sparano hasn't settled on his Oline yet, it's all fine if he wishes to tinker with the #2's and #3's, but if he is looking for an area to help get off to a faster start, a settled Oline would be the first place to look imo.

I can understand people being cautious in their optimism when the team doesn't have the best game. I look at preseason for what it is. If it doesn't count in the standings, I don't take too much from it. So long as the injuries are minimal and position battles sort themselves out, then that's what I want.

You'll see the local sports writers write their pieces about the Phins looking sloppy and blah blah blah b/c that's what they get paid for. What else would they write about? Even if the Phins scored 50 points last night, I wouldn't look into it. You saw what the Redskins under Spurrier did when they went 5-0 and had like 200 pts.

You'd think we'd know better by now as fans. Guess not.

He hasnt settled on the Oline since he got here. Only Jake Long and Vernon Carey are for sure starters year in and year out, and Carey's time may be coming at some point.

The only problem I have with our preseason play is that, under Sparano, we haven't seem improvement from week to week as you should. Then, again under Sparano, we've seemed to start off slowly each season. The slow start, that begins in the preseason and carries into the season, is Sparano's problem. For whatever reason, this team doesn't always seem to be 'ready' when the bell rings. Now, he is great at adjusting as the season goes on and adjusting the game plan, even during the game if needed....but....

You hate to say "it's only the pre-season" but the reality is....it really is the pre-season.
Games are treated different and winning is not as important as evaluating talent.
Take it for what it is and we will see September how our prospects pan out.

The Colts hardly EVER win a preseason game, hasn't seemed to destroy their seasons.

    Reminder:

We went 4-0 last pre-season, and ended up 7-9.

The Pre-Season doesn't mean ****. It's there for coaches to evaluate team chemistry, performance, as well as individual performance in a real game situation.

Fact of the matter is they were playing their first game in 6+ months in the rain, and mud. The Offensive line is still in flux, only LT and RT are probably solidified. The Defense is filled with rookies, or people playing new positions (FS, DE, NT, OLB), and for those guys it was their very first NFL snaps.

I was disappointed in the way they performed, Tampa is not that good of a team. However I fully understand and take things in context. Our first team was playing in some awful conditions for a first game of the year.

If anything take away the fact that this team is deep. As the game went on, they were able to win it with 2nd and 3rd string, and looked much better in comparison depth in my opinion.

the difference is; the starters look good before they take them out. I think the Colts scored on both their possessions with the starters in. We couldn't even get out of the infield. If we look bad again next week I may be on the sky is falling bandwagon

Its hard to say whether that was due to playcalling, field conditions, players, or a combination of all 3.

I will say that the plays they called were very bland on offense, and didn't seem like they were designed to challenge the Bucs, as much as evaluate things on the o-line, and receiver/QB chemistry/timing.

They were also accompanied by mediocre showings in the preseason.

I specifically remember last year our offensive line looking out of sync. Those problems carried over against Atlanta.

This is exactly what has me concerned. Every year we tinker with the OL, and it's no wonder that every year our OL looks out of sync for the first 3 games.

We're falling into the same trap this year. Only difference is that this year we may be able to afford it with Buffalo being our first game.

The Rotating OL is a huge mistake IMO if they're gonna try it again this year. IIRC, no championship caliber teams in the modern era used rotating OLs.

We shouldn't be reinventing the wheel here just because we think we have decent interior OL depth.

I wouldn't go that far. I've seen a lot of posts talking about the meaning (or lack thereof) of won-loss records in pre-season, but it shouldn't be a consideration relative to how the team truly plays.

How your starters and 2nd team perform throughout the pre-season can be indicative of how your team performs in the regular season, regardless of whether you eventually win or lose the pre-season game. I've seen years where highly regarded Dolphin teams (1995, for example) underachieved in pre-season, and wound up having disappointing years. Likewise, I've seen years where the 1st and 2nd teams played well in preseason, and had a strong year (i.e. 2008).

Now it's too early to come to any conclusions yet, and how you play in preseason isn't always indicative of how the season will go, but at the same time I don't think it's always something you can just write off, either.
