Omar Kelly, of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, reports Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland and the team do not feel comfortable with the talent in this year's draft at offensive tackle, cornerback, receiver and nose tackle. Ireland noted that the team needs to identify more defensive players who can pressure the quarterback.

That sounds totally like a smokescreen!! Either to other NFL teams or to the OT he is negotiating with.

Yep, this is exactly what Ireland said, from the transcript at http://www.miamidolphins.com

(On after quarterback, what positions he feels are most important in building a team) – “I think there are certain core positions out there that you have to have. One is cornerback, one is left tackle, pressure players, a quarterback, a No. 1 receiver, nose tackle. I think those are all important and I think those are all core positions.”

I think Ireland was speaking more in what the team needs. He's not pleased with our talent/depth at the positions listed above.

Omar did his own little twist and spin on this story.

I think we do need a WR. I think Chad Johnson is the guy we want rather than drafting an unknown.

What a twist on words. Yeah we can find a #1 receiver, or develop our young talent into becoming one.

this is why Omar Kelly annoys me... unless Jeff said something additional, I listened to the same Press Conference Omar did. he said he does not feel we currently have our core #1 WR.

that's not the same as saying WE WILL BE DRAFTINg A #1 WR!!!

Dumb assumptions and illogic annoy the hell out of me.

first of all, ireland and Parcells indicating a need is different than them saying WHERE they will look to solve that need and WHEN.

Maybe they feel there ARE no true #1 WRs in this years draft. Heck, no one else in the football world believes any WR truly grades out as a high 1st round prospect. why would we grade differently than the rest of the football universe.

it's possible Ireland will draft a second or third round guy and then develop them. It's also possible he'll keep developing Ginn... just because Ginn is not a #1 wr right now does not mean he could not be develpoed to be one in a year or two if there is no one good enough available in this year's draft.

Or perhaps Ireland will build the Defense this year then address WR NEXT year.

Or maybe in Free agency next year.

    Or via a trade.

Or maybe he lives with the porblem of not having a true #1 WR for now because you can;t fix everything at once.

So Omar's asinine declaration that ireland WILL be targeting a #1 WR in this draft is just stupidly assumptive to me.

God that guy annoys me. Why do so many media guys misquote and misinterpret people by adding their OWN assumptions to these peoples' statements???

    that's it. rant done.

Oh.. and similarly, he NEVER said "We're selceting a QB in this year's draft." Just that we do not have a franchise QB as of this moment.

MAYBE we look to address that in the draft, but he NEVER said we WILL.

    Dumb-*** Omar.

"Omar Kelly, of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, reports Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland and the team do not feel comfortable with the talent in this year's draft at offensive tackle, cornerback, receiver and nose tackle."

another idiotic misquote..... CLEARLY Ireland said he felt the DOLPHINS roster lacked in these core areas. He NEVER said this year's draft class was weak in these areas.

Seriously, how does Omar keep his job?????

Are you getting that quote from Omar's article or KFFL or somewhere else?

Here's what he wrote..." Ireland also said the Dolphins are interested in finding a No. 1 receiver, and might select a quarterback despite the presence of veteran Josh McCown, who was signed this offseason, and John Beck, the team's second-round selection in 2007..."

He actually never says "in the draft", just that Ireland is interested in finding one.

Well now, he is the "best" Wr still available, the money we save by trading back we can use to sign Ocho Cinco and we pick up a #2 pick giving us..#32, #57, #40 and #64 (basically a late 2nd round pick).

4 2nd round picks and Chad Johnson and the #8 pick now that could be the foundation of a Miami Resurgence, Cinco is 29 years old, in three years when we should be contending, he still will be in his prime as well.

Romo didn't really take off until TO came to Dallas either...Hmmm....:wink2:

I am shocked by the offensive tackles and cornerbacks being on that list. From what I have been hearing and reading, this draft is loaded with talent at those two positions. QB and Safety, I believe to be short on talent in this draft but not the other positions. Probably another pre-draft smokescreen. We will have to wait a couple of weeks to figure this all out.

Oh, ok. Wow, I just got done reading what KFFL wrote, and they totally misinterpreted what Omar wrote, especially about not being comfortable about the OTs, CBs, etc in the draft; the Wr thing I can understand because we don't really have a #1 WR, but "finding one", didn't really rule out Ginn being that guy.

Omar twisted what Ireland said........KFFL butchered what Omar wrote........maybe Parcells and Co. don't have to waste their time sending out smokescreens, the media would probably get it wrong anyway.

I'm sorry unless Malcolm Kelly is there at 32 I don't want a WR. More pressing needs. I think we would be fine with Ginn, Wilford, and Hagan.

I think we draft Mario Manningham to fill that playmaking position. Ginn is our speed and Wilford is our possession guy

I know he (Sweed) had the wrist injury his senior year and only got in 6 games as he tried to play through it but I think thats it. He had played 33 straight contests before hurting his wrist in the spring game :pity:

Well, I was basing it on the quoted 'article' atop the thread:

"Omar Kelly, of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, reports the Miami Dolphins are interested in finding a No. 1 wide receiver in this year's NFL Draft,"

So, if THAT quote is inaccurate, then that's where the problem started.

-read your link... the thread quote was a misquote of omar, who also somewhat over-emphasized the Dolphins statement that we do not have a #1 WR as us currently, actively 'trying to find' one.

    Still dislike omar, though.

Hey ATV, I REALLY appreciate the amount of work you put in aggregating so much material and so many articles from ALL over the place for us here at The Phins to read. Could you do me a little favor though? sometimes i get confused by the way you post the article threads...

the first time I read one of your posts I couldn;t tell it was a direct quote from the article because it looked like the Poster (you) typing his own thoughts. Any chance you could put a couple of your own words atop the thread intoducing the article and where you found it, then set the article itself of in quotes?

This is what I'm used to seeing on the boards, and it usually makes it much clearer who said what, and what the source was. just a suggestion.

thanks again for all the info... and ESPECIALLY for your incredible work in the draft forum.

Yeah, seems like KFFL misquoted Omar who did spin a little of what Ireland said...Ireland said that a #1 WR was a core position...in another question, he said that we needed to improve our core positions, so Omar spun that as Ireland saying we want a #1 WR in the draft...

KFFL misquoted Omar's article where Ireland was referring to our needs in the draft, not that the draft had a dearth of talent at OT, CB, WR, and NT...

And as to QB, Omar spins Ireland, when referring to our QBs on the roster, saying that "there is a comfort level there" and "anything can happen in the draft" as that they will be drafting a QB.

I think Omar and KFFL bothe had the "Freudian slips" in reporting on Ireland's comments...
