Yeah I could see baseball. Like at 3rd base or something. I can't see him at pitcher since he wasn't accurage in the NFL. I know those are different but the player has to be able to catch the ball.
(Raises hand) I liked the Pat White pick too. Right up until I watched Coach Lee’s video on the Wildcat. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KR76aoKghM8"]YouTube- How Does Darren McFadden Do It?[/ame] The guy taking the snap has to be a threat to run it up the gut to maintain the mismatch. Brown becoming a passing threat seems much more likely than White being a between the tackles pounder. Luckily for White, he’s considered a good outfield prospect and been has been drafted by 4 MLB teams since 2004. http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/item_Nmdxl2kPnKWn815G22TYTN
I've never been a fan of the White pick, but what I really don't understand is why they haven't pushed to see what else the kid can do (i.e. WR, RB, Slot, returner). They supposedly picked the kid to be a QB, but early on that was pretty much shown to be a mistake....I don't know how much White himself may have objected to a position change, as he's never really said much publicly....Whatever, the signs are pointing to the kid being listed under the "bust" column...
I thought it was an interesting pick at the time, too high for him, but not a bad pick. He looked like he would be able to take the Wildcat thing to another level. Unfortunately he has been seemingly overmatched the whole time. On top of that he can't through the ball very well anymore. That makes me wonder why the fins won't allow him to wear gloves? I don't think he can grip the ball properly without them.
There are at least 3 or 4 club level "experts" here that fought with me and other's tooth and nail on how Pat was a good pick, how he will fit in,how he "is" a QB in this league, why the 2nd round pick is justified, etc. I am miffed beyond belief that none of them have come to the conclusion that Pat will not make this team, none have come here to eat crow, and the subject is all but forgotten. Please...you love the accolades when you're correct. Now let's fess up when you're wrong. Now,let's rip 54 for being Pat's adversary?Orrrrr let's just say it was a bad decision by the Big3.....
I fought with my fellow buds on draft day sayin it was a horrible pick. I thought the wildcat worked fine enough with ronnie brown and wouldn't last long anyway. They told me I was crazy with how well Pat White could run and throw the ball. So far I look smart, but I can admit it could have ended up the other way around. Maybe Pat White just isn't that guy. It'll take a freak athlete, but I do believe a powerful QB, that can take the punishment, with a good arm can revolutionize football in that way.
As one that has never been a White proponent, even before the draft, the fact is none of us really knew what we think we know now....Many, as you said, have liked the White pick. That said, I can tell you unequivocally there's been quite a few guys I've been very wrong about....heck, I still think John Beck got the short end of the stick here. I thought Shawn Murphy was going to be a stud OL for us. I even thought Ted Ginn was a good choice and still think, based on the fact that our return game was only mildly decent the last few years because of Ginn and the fact that no one else has stood out, that we should not have traded him away... Being wrong about a guy isn't a bad thing and White isn't gone yet. Remember these guys (the Troika) picked him at #44 overall. They will resist getting rid of him as long as they can.... So as fans, we can only go on whatever research we do and whatever knowledge we have available to us. Conversely, so only can the Troika. On paper, many people felt and still feel White's talents could translate to this level. That hasn't been the case, so far. Bottom line, as history has always bored out, the draft is a crap shoot. You can poke, prod, test, retest, watch years of tape and give fancy psychological tests to a guy and still be wrong. Let me add, that the only reason I disliked the pick was that we just needed LBers, WRs, OG, S, etc much more desperately than a project guy at that spot in the draft. Maybe, just possibly, next year in the draft we'll have enough talent to waste a pick on a project guy. The problem with White, as I see it, is either they haven't wanted to move him around or he hasn't wanted to be moved or perhaps he's just slower at picking things up or maybe he just isn't good enough....I don't know for sure but gloating over being right about a guy or apologizing about being wrong about a guy doesn't make the team (or the kid) any better.... EDIT: BTW, I am NOT one of any kind of expert (as my wife tells it, of anything), I just happen to be a club member...
I disagree. One thing about Parcells and Co. is that they don't fall in love with these guys and keep guys that underperform. We may not have seen it yet with a draft pick but how many of the free agents that they have brought in have they dumped after one year? 5? 6? They aren't afraid to admit they made a mistake and are able to quickly turn the page. With that history, one can only wonder if White is going to be the next casulty.
This is exactly what i said when we drafted White. Most people think the wildcat runner needs to be flashy and quick when in fact they need to be strong and patient. If you're going to pick a quarterback to do this out of college i still think the best to do it would be tim tebow. I would have MUCH rather us drafted him this year instead of pat white last year.
True, but none have been high draft choices....UDFAs and FAs...yes...not second round picks... I'm not saying I'd be disappointed if he were, just that there is more to hold him here than say, Ginn (not their choice), Turner, Murphy (3rd round choices), and a slew of others...
It will be interesting to see what they do with White. You don't normally see a team part with a 2nd round pick after 1 year, but I can't see them keeping 4 Qb's on the roster and I can't see White supplanting one of the other 3. We can't stash him on the practice squad to see if he can develop cause he's been in too many games. I don't know what we can do with him other than cut him. It would be foolish and damaging to the Qb position to trade either Pennington or Thigpen just to keep a spot open for White. He simply hasn't performed well enough to keep the roster spot.
I've been thinking the same thing the past week or so. How his limitations must be affecting other guys fighting for jobs. I liked the motive for drafting White. Unfortunately he turned out not to be Dennis Dixon, Josh Johnson or Seneca Wallace. Hopefully he lands on his feet, whatever avenue he pursues hereafter.
That was the exact reason I didn't like the pick, his inability to be a threat up the middle. I believe that the WC can and will be around for a long time just b/c it provides some numerical advantages for the offense, but it has to develop with a player that can both threaten the middle with a run and be a threat to pass (Tebow type). IMO Brown has a better chance of developing a good enough passing ability than White has of developing inside running ability. You basically need a superior athlete. I never saw that superior level of athletic ability in White.
What really surprised me about Pat White is they never really used him for what he is, a Running Back with a good arm, but either way, I do tend to think barring some surprise White's days in Miami are numbered. They have spent two preseason developing him and while he is better this yr, sooner or later Sparano/Lee/Henning just are not going to spend any more time on him. Players like Pat White are the reason why I'm so strongly in favor of a NFL Developmental League.
It does seem that Sparano's preferred offense is for a pocket mobile Qb taking few chances with the ball, White doesn't fit that mold at all.
Its no surprise to see White purged from the ranks his 2nd round selection would otherwise refute, having apparently exiled him not merely to a bench, but a no mans land of self-doubt and uncertainty. Forced to execute by design this regime's tactical blueprint, rather than rely on their individual gifts of read and react unpredictability, the innate talents of White, nearly as much as Thigpen, contrast their own philosophy, and despite claims of adapting to the strengths of their players, it doesn't appear to apply at QB. Personally, I'm not so sure it should. Thigpen may have indeed saved himself from such doom by adapting his play to at least qualify as a reserve backup, but having confused this strength with anything else, so central to the game, seems to me this shared dictatorship's most baffling error to date, and their indifference to it, of only a lasting ignorance.
Lefty's don't play 3rd base, so it will have to be "or something". He is most likely best suited as an outfielder.
