Maybe its me but they may have lost the game by removing the starters that won the Jacksonville game. Did anyone else notice that Jason Allen was starting instead of Sean Smith? I don't know what they was doing but they got to fix this before the season opener.
think its just to see how jason allen matched up against rooddy white. he had picture perfect technique on that first pass
Yeah, Im pretty sure we know who our starters are at most postions by this point. Looks like we wanted to elevate some guys on the depth chart who have been performing well against 2nd and 3rd stringers to see how they compare against the first team. Just a better chance at evaluating their talent in game situations.
He got burned bigtime by White tonight on and out and up that should have been 7 points had Ryan not overthrown the ball. Smith bit bigtime on the route and left White wide open. It was a nice move/route, but its still not what you want to see from him.
Does anyone know who the QB was at the end of the game who wasn't giving our young guys on the bubble a chance to catch anything?
thats what preseason is for. play around with different lineups and see if someone surprises you. You know who you got starting, see what everyone else has.
All I am saying is this. If they say the 3rd preseason game is the dress rehearsal for the real thing, why change things all of a sudden...
I see what you saying. I guess I'm just frustrated with loss even though it is preseason. Just tired of seeing our team lose so much. Know what I mean??
should i point out that this is the first preseason game we've lost in 3 years? but i hear ya, its always nice seein that W rather than the L.
John Jerry is an upgrade at RG. He's very well rounded. Not so sure about Incognito. Misi made some nice plays. Sapp will be great for our special teams and backup nickel. Carrol not ready for nickel role. Sean Smith is in a tail spin. Henne will get better but is far from a finished product. If Chambers had Henne he would have been HOF'er on 12-15 yd out routes alone. Scratching my head as to why they don't develop better timing routes with Henne's arm. He has amazing touch down the field.
All those preseason wins and we have started the regular season with losses. I am hoping this actually changes that. Why not use the preseason for experimenting but even then, we look like crap tonight.
Figured it was something of this sort. Didn't Vontae not start a regular season game early last year for doing the same? Still.... Smith's inconsistent play has really disappointed me. I had (still have) high hopes for him. Hope he gets it together before Buffalo.
Ethan Skolnick reported that Sean Smith was late for a meeting and that's why he was benched in the first quarter. But, I am very disappointed in Smith's play this preseason. I have followed Smith on Twitter. He's not a real mature kid and I think he's overconfident in his abilities. I also think, from looking at him, that he really has failed to develop his body physically in the off-season (he needed some upper body strength and a bit more body balance). And he has blown coverage in virtually every preseason game. The coaches have been careful with his psyche, but there comes a time when a kid has to grow up and get tough; take the criticism; and decide to get better. Unfortunately, at this point, there isn't time to really hone his craft or body (like he had from Feb to July to do). I really like Smith's raw talents - he has such great length and great talent when he is on his game but I'm troubled by his play right now.
Smith is a confident man. He's known for his trash talking, so I'm not surprised. And honestly, I like that. You have to have confidence playing in this league.
Plus I think we have to look at the fact that there has been virtually no pass rush at all. I don't know if it's the lack of personnel or Mike Nolan not showing his hand during the preseason.... probably a combination of both. Still, if a QB has all day to sit in the pocket.... I don't care who you have in the secondary; someone is going to break free, and often.
I thought the CBs played much better this game. Davis was a monster and arguably the best player on the field. He still got beat for a couple but in the NFL all CBs get beat. Smith played well after that one embarrassing play. He had a PBU on White and was nosy in run support. J. Allen also played well as the starter. He was in perfect position on that long pass attempt. The one TD allowed was the same outside bracket that requires S support inside that everybody keeps blaming on the CBs. I also thought Carrol, Ness and Sapp played decent when they came in. It seemed like Carroll made the majority of the STs tackles.
It's just disappointing that they, once again, started a game off slowly and just couldn't get untracked. Dropped passes, mis-communication on routes, poor run blocking, poor pass blocking, missed assignments along the OL. Davis played better than he has, but a couple of those plays could have gone either way...tonight they went for him. What was with all the rotation of players ?? Both offensively and defensively. I know we had a few players out, but geez...we must have used 16 different defensive guys in the first two series ?? Now, most teams game plan for the 3rd preseason, but apparently (according to Kim Bokamper on the sidelines) we didn't do any at all. If so, that could explain some of the sloppiness, but once again, this team looked unprepared to play an opponent...schematically (can be explained due to preseason), personnel-wise and general organization-wise....
