    Did Henne 'win' the job?

In your opinion, did Henne do enough to earn all 16 starts this season? or do you think if he plays poorly we'll throw in Pennington or Thigpen after 3 or 4 games?

I just didn't see him really outplay either of the other guys. Hopefully it was just vanilla playcalling which favors Pennington's style more, but I think if it was up to me I'd start Pennington.

At this point, Penny is the more productive QB, no question - he analyzes the field more quickly which makes him more efficient.

The staff has made the judgment call that Henne's superior physical skills will overcome his "average" field vision which will improve with experience. In other words, they believe Henne is "good enough" now, and will improve.

He didn't have to "win the job" this preseason. He was already the starter.

He would have to have a meltdown of epic proportions to get benched. We've already seen what Pennington can do. He's a backup at this point, nothing more.

Penny is just throwing WR screens. They're not really asking him to do anything.

He throws it downfield to Marshall one time and he bails him him out. Tried to hit Cobb on a wheel-route and hit the LB in the back. If that LB turned around he picks it.

Don't get me wrong, I like Penny. I'm glad he's our backup. The field just happens to get very compressed when he is under center.

This is just major pre-season overreaction.

I expect us to play well at Buffalo and to be pretty good this season. If we're not, then this regime has a problem. A big problem.

While Penny wasn't throwing deep,he was a little more efficient throwing safer passes.Henne still is not wher he needs to be,hope he gets there soon.

The problem is, our defense isn't good enough to rely on short, safer passes. We need to air it out. If we were a team like say, the Jets, Penny would be the perfect QB. A game manager.

This is also why I'm not too worried about this preseason. I expect this offense to be a predominant passing offense. I don't think we've seen anything yet.

That, and you can't play in today's NFL living off of 10,12,14 play drives. You need to have quick scores.

I meant to put 'win' in quotation marks. I know he didn't have to win the job. I just wanted to hear some opinions on whether you thought he did enough to 'win' the job. My opinion was he didn't really outplay either of the other guys.

 Our offense is way too limited with Pennington. We need the big play with this young defense. I love Pennington, but even if he did start he'd wear down.

I'm fine with Henne. I feel confident with the ball in his hands. He has had a rough preseason, but i'm not worried about him. I'm more worried about our o-line keeping him upright.

I've been beating that drum for 3 years now

It's true though. That Indy game, in hindsight, was a good lesson for this organization. Tough as it was to swallow (that's what she said), it showed that an elite running game is no match for an elite passing game.

I don't think the regime went out and got Brandon Marshall to run it on 1st and 2nd down. I also don't think they would've invested two second round picks and a huge contract in a WR had they not thought Henne was the guy to make it happen with said WR.

Also, aside from last night, the O-Line had looked MUCH better in pass blocking than they had run blocking. That should also tell us something.

To answer your question, Henne didn't play as well as Penny or Thigpen this preseason. There could be many factors involved (Playcalling). I hope he starts to get the game speed down before we see Buffalo and their one threat (C.J. Spiller). Spiller could wreck havok on this D.

I really think people are forgetting that Pennington lost his last 4 starts with Miami.

And as much as I love the guy and what he did for this team in 2008, when put against tough teams, he faltered. He won 2 games in '08 against teams that finished above .500 (1 against a Brady-less pats and the birth of the WC, and the other against the Jets and Favre throwing lefty)

This is Henne's team this year. No matter what. Benching him will only hinder his progress greatly and set our franchise back yet again

Yep. Going back to Penny will destroy any hope Henne has of ever being the leader of this team. It would also signal the beggining of the end for this regime.

    1) you underestimate the Dilfer
    2) one of the greatest defensive units in the history of the game coupled w/ an elite offensive line & special teams

Exactly! And for what?! To win 8 games instead of 6. Or win 10 games instead of 8 and get demolished in the Wild Card round?

Henne's 24 years old. He doesn't even have a full season under his belt.

Look at Aaron Rogers. It wasn't until his 5th season that he starting showing signs of greatness. Look at Eli Manning. It was 4 years before he won a playoff game. But the Packers had patience. The Giants had patience. Look how it's paid off.

There's gonna be bumps. There's gonna be head scratchers. But we have to be in it for the long haul with this guy. He's too young, too promising to start getting impatient with. IMO, he has a free pass this year.

Ok, How about Doug Williams ?? A QB that didn't have football smarts, was inaccurate and not very instinctive, couldn't throw two completions in a row...but he took the Skins to the SB and won it ??

And Dilfer was a boob as a QB...he was a journeyman QB who, as you said got hooked up with a good D...the thing is, you say on one hand, we have to have a franchise QB to win, but you discount the times, like the Skins, Dolphins (to the SB with David Woodley), Ravens, Bucs, Da' Bears with Grossman and even the G-men of a couple of years ago...Eli didn't win that game, their D kept them in the game long enough for the Pats D to get exposed...That's a weak argument...

Now, is Henne an elite QB....no, of course not. Is he capable ?? Yes. Will he show that this year, or next year ?? Who knows, but even if Henne is an elite QB suddenly this season, if the D can't keep people from scoring and the STs act like they are unable to block or tackle, we won't go anywhere and it won't be Henne's fault...

Get off those damn cliffs. It's irritating when after every preseason game we start *****ing and crying. Last year we went 4-0 in the preseason and lost 9 games. The colts went 0-4 and lost 3. Preseason is NOT the regular season. I also believe that the cliff jumpers don't actually watch the play calling. It was the most basic of basic and they weren't calling situational plays. They called plays just to see certain players run certain routes. Most of the night all you saw were guys running crossing routes with the occasional clear out. The preseason isn't about winning games, it's about evaluating young players, FA's and UDFA's in the plays we want them to see. If that ends in a TD yay. If not it's preseason. As you can tell, these threads piss me off.

I feel like everyone is really over assessing this preseason. What we saw in the Jacksonville game from our starting O is what we'll be seeing most of this season. Sure there will be times where our O faulters and we'll lose a game or two because of it. But overall we'll be set.

Ah, yeah...he sat behind one of the greatest for his first 4 years. He proved his worth when Favre was traded....

But I do agree. I come from the old school where a QB sat behind a proven vet starter for 3-5 year before starting....those days are over though.

This is Henne's year to shine. He's got everything a young QB could hope to have....a decent OL (despite the issues they've had this ps), a solid group of WRs with a bona fide proven superstar, not one, but two RBs that can be elite by themselves if needed, a FB that dreams are made of and he's got the physical tools that God gave him, some real game experience to learn off of to go along with 3 yrs of tutelage under a proven, winning veteran QB to help him along. It's way too early to say "It's now or never" however, it's his time...

Penny didn't do anything to show that he's more qualified than Henne at this point. We all know what we have with Penny. As great as he has been with us, he still has the stigma of "Break glass in case of emergency" written across his forehead. If it comes to Penny displacing Henne, we will be in a lot more trouble than it appears...

Henne didn't even have a bad preseason. There were multiple drops in all 4 games, there was some miss-communication that will hopefully get straightened out over the next 9 days. Not to mention, he was outstanding in Jacksonville. Some fans just need to relax and remember the preseason if for getting the kinks worked out. There's going to be some errors and some poor play, but it's a learning process for the regular season.

whose cliffjumping and whose crying? I just wanted to see if anyone else maybe saw something in Henne that I missed. I even mentioned playcalling in the original post as a factor.

I wanted to see Henne come out and take the job and really show something. He didn't. He showed about as much as Pennington and Thigpen.
