It's not that they're not improved from when Sparano and company took over. They just blow it for some reason over and over and over again. They have the right philosophy but they're just fairly dumb people. Henning is a dumb offensive coordinator, Sparano isn't the smartest coach, and Ireland has his bizarre drafting strategies.
Oh yes, this is the reason for why we're talking about this in the first place. No,SS didn't turn it on for us last year(this is true) but he was the ONLY CB in Dolphins history to start that position all season. There was a reason for that and it had nothing to do with Jason Allen,or did it? As for Davis.....Gotta luv the boy..
Settle down folks, the only real change is Jason Allen for Sean Smith, everyone else is involved were depth players and package guys..that is it.
A win in week one is a must to get the team moving towards a groove. There's just too much youth and no veteran leadership.
I certainly do put alot of emphasis on good or bad game changing plays. You only get 16 games a year. VD made his share of both we all know. His good outweighed his bad though under the circumstances. Honestly I dont remember JA being torched by Moss. Im not sure if that was sarcasm or an actual event? But if it wasnt last year then its less relevant to me tbh. Getting torched by Moss isnt the end of the world, its gonna happen. But ya, recent events ARE what matters.
honestly, i rather have jason allen start over sean smith. People tend to forget that Allen intercepted Donovan Mcnabb twice.
Well Let's hope Davis continues to improve. He had an outstanding game against the Falcons, he looked like Revis out there that game. Hope thats a sign of things to come this season, and it could make up for the other side.
I have said all along that Jason Allen has shown the ability to make big plays on the football field, whether as a CB, S, or STer. Smith may be struggling now but in no way is the team "giving up" on him. Everyone needs to relax because the coaches know more than we do. They wouldn't start Jason if they didn't feel like he was the best bet going into week 1. The guy can play the game. If he can settle in at the CB position that would be great for this team. Enough with the negativity. LETS GO DOLPHINS
Yeremiah Bell, Karlos Dansby and Randy Starks is your leadership on defense. Possibly Crowder. On offense we're gonna need Ronnie Brown to be one and I see Jake Long being a leader on offense despite being a left tackle.
I really don't get it. Sean Smith wasn't getting it done. What did you want them to do? Let him have the starting spot?
Simply a motivational ploy to get someone to step up at corner. Hopefully as a team we get better because of it.
That's pretty much my take on it too. For some reason Sean Smith became a fan favorite even before he was drafted. People wanted him drafted in the first round. If you go back and read the post draft threads you'll see people that thought Vontae was a reach and Sean Smith was a steal. Meanwhile noone wanted Jason Allen when he was drafted and people have been clamoring for him to be waived every single offseason. Then you have Sean Smith starting out hot with that nice pick in last year's preseaason and people were predicting greatness. Compare that to Jason Allen who was basically rotated from CB to S and back to CB completely wrecking any chance he had for progress. But you know what? JA never gave up, never sulked, never mouthed off. All he did was put his head down, do what was asked and got a little better every year once Parcells arrived. Meanwhile it seems to me Sean Smith bought into his hype and took the Spring off because the only thing that improved in his game was his tackling. This is really a tale of the tortoise and the hare with JA playing the tortoise. Slow but steady improvement has finally paid off and he now gets his chance. I wouldnt be surprised if Sean Smith is put back in the startiing lineup the following week but if Jason Allen can play shut down corner for an entire game then thats going to be tough to do. Its up to JA now. He's waited along time for this chance. I hope he's up to it
Well could you please call in again and tell us a miracle happened and Will Allen will be back next week, fully healthy, and starting instead of Smith or Jason? Please
Dansby is one guy and I'd hardly say Bell has been great in that role, although I'll give him credit. Starks? He's not a leader. He's been a good to great player the last couple of years but I've never seen a Vonnie Holliday presence out of him. Brown's not that kind of guy and neither is Ricky Williams nor Jake Long. Grove if anything is that when he's on the field.
Listen, the sky isnt falling on our team but there is NO question Jason Allen starting is a bad thing..... Who knows maybe he suprises us but you have to be concerned because this didnt happen because Allen was setting the world on fire, it happened because a once promising rookie has seemed to digress. Nolan, we need lotsa pressure sir because our secondary is a long way from what you had in Denver.
No sarcasm, it was real. I don't know if you were on the boards then, but that is what was always brought up whenever anybody mentioned J.A. I was defending J.A. back then. Not b/c I thought he should start, b/c I didn't, but rather that people were putting so much emphasis on a few plays and not giving him credit for his overall level of play. In the game I was referring to Moss had like 125 yards and 3 TDs. It was one of the two games Allen started in 2008. J.A. played terrible that game and he had other poor moments that year, but other than that one game, I'd say his overall play was middle of the road. But fans have a tendency to only focus on the few plays they see. IMO J.A. had both a tendency to make plays and to give up plays. I feel that against most players he made more plays than he gave up but the margin wasn't very large. This preseason I thought he showed fewer brain farts and I'm hopeful that the margin of good to bad plays improves.
Yikes. Really surprised to hear this news today. Sure Smith hasnt looked great lately, but... Jason Allen starting? really? Yikes.
Ah ok. I was'nt doubting it, I just cant remember. Ive been around for a long while both here and FH (havent visited them since this board developed). I've just recently decided to start adding a few more thoughts. I think we probably agree that Jason starting over Sean is a disapointment considering Sean's talents, and our recent investment in him. I also think that Jason starting for us at CB to start the year is not going to kill us. I think hes a decent young player we should keep around. In a perfect world Sean would put his problems behind him and sharpen his skills to once again start for us. I hope this young duo we have here will be our future.
I'm not sure they trust SS24. I don't trust him. IMO he's still an immature kid who doesn't quite fully comprehend what it means to be a responsible adult who, as such, treats the NFL as his professional career rather than just a football game. I don't see the light on inside, and I don't see any true urgency or fire on his part. It's not a good sign when players console you during a game as if you're a child and they're the parent. If he doesn't start growing up REAL SOON, then his career will be short lived.
I can see where your coming from. Maybe this is all part of the plan to knock his butt down a notch. I see alot of arrogance on his part when he makes even the smallest of plays. I LOVE that, but dude, you gotta do it more than once to state your claim as a bad***.
It could be. Hopefully he realizes soon that talent alone isn't enough to cut it in this league.... and I don't think he'll realize it unless he gets a little push. Maybe benching him is his "push".
IMO J.A.'s problem has been that he isn't very bright. Couple that with the position switches and the problem is exacerbated. I have maintained for years now that J.A. could well end up being a decent starter when he has played long enough that he doesn't have to think anymore. I mean even Vinny Testeverde became known as a savvy veteran after enough years and he was dumb as a box of rocks. I just didn't think J.A. would be able to hang around long enough for that to happen in Miami.
Just Trade SS to the Jets with our 1st overall for Revis. They would lose a guy that they prob won't be able to sign and we get a good CB. I mean they got so many people with contracts due, and Sanchez will need weapons. *Oh wait, I just came back to reality.
Not to the degree that I'm speaking of. I flat out do not think he's takes this game as seriously as he should. Regardless, he's not just "any" 23 year old athlete. He's a professional football player, emphasis on the "professional" part. Using "age" is not a valid excuse. Added: There are plenty of college grads who take their careers seriously. 23 is a lot different than an 18 year old NBA player fresh out of high school.
you are getting this upset about 1 starter switching positions with his backup and turnover of our bench players like Douglas and Grant and a washed up DMart as well as getting rid of the two worst players on our team in Turner and White. Have to say that in general, this has been the absolute most pathetic two days of complaining in this forum (IMO) since we switched over from Finheaven. None of these moves are that big of a deal. I would much rather Sean Smith sit for awhile to get his head on straight before going back into the lineup. Just because he is not starting now does not mean he won't later ( see J Allen). Relax everyone, if we get blown out vs. Buffalo, then you can freak out
If the same old players make the same old mistakes again this year I say we get out the broom and sweep the DB clean. I've had enough of this ****. Last year our DB's saw more balls go over their heads than a second basemen. Lets hope they have improved.
Give you credit Rafi, you have said that for at least 2 yrs that I've noticed. Now before people jump off the ledge, Sean Smith was not dropped off at the local ASPCA, he is still on the team, if J Allen messes up, he can be in the game faster than you can say "buckle dem chin straps ya prima donnas".
I'm not surprised by this move at all (most of you know my stance already though). I did, however, think it was going to be W. Allen taking SS24's spot by week 3 or after the bye. But after he went on IR, I was worried. This is a huge loss for us IMO. And although I wasn't too happy with how SS24 had been playing, I'm not thrilled to see JAllen on the field instead. It seems a lesser of 2 evils choice.
Make that your sigline because that is the theme for the first half of this season. People love to talk about Madison and Surtain, but never mention Taylor, Armstrong, O-Gun and the rest of the pressure portion of the great defenses of the late 90's early 2000's. Anyone else notice that once Jim Bates left Miami he never had nearly the success he had with those players?
I would love to see Jason Allen get a pick week 1 just to see all the haters eat crow. This guy has been our default whipping boy for too long. Good for you Jason...Give 'em hell.
Thank you!! The guy catches flack early on for not starting..... and now he catches flack b/c he IS finally starting. WTF. We should all be happy that OUR 1st rounder earned the freakin start. If Jason has hypothetically surpassed Sean (and busted his butt in trying to do so), then why in the heck would anyone want to start the less deserving player?..... or reward the less dedicated player?
I know I'm gonna get flamed for this but here goes: Let me start by saying I hope I'm wrong about SS24. It's early in his career and I very well could be wrong, but.... I think many fans were in denial regarding his play the 2nd half of last year and this TC and preseason. Fans became obsessed with "home-grown/drafted" and young talent. To justify him continuing to start we started believing that he was good in coverage based of comparing his "yards per snap" numbers to ONLY Vontae Davis. Sure, his numbers on this single stat were better than Vontae's. But compared to the rest of the league's CBs his numbers were very poor in this stat. Couple that with 0 INTs, questionnable tackling and you have a CB that is very poor relative to the rest of the league. Regardless of him being a rookie or not, it's not acceptable for a team with playoff aspirations to have such a player starting on their team. Yes, I understand this then raises the question, well what does that say about Vontae's play?! The answer....it says he was poor too last year in coverage. The next question everyone will ask: Isn't Vontae's starting spot in question then? My answer would be: He has shown much better progress with every game last year and throughout this TC and preseason. And the areas of progress I've notice are: He's become better at breaking on the ball. Much better at anticipating Screen passes to both the WR and RB. His anticipation of the game in general seem to improve everytime I watch him. We all know he tackles like a LB, and he has a nose for the ball it seems. All things SS24 never showed progress on. Sorry if I sound like a broken record.
