Your kidding right? If sean smith is so bad that allen has to start we are toast.Get ready for 7-9 season.
People say that but I believe the guy graduated in 3 years from Tennessee or something to that affect. He may not process the information on the field quickly, but that isn't the same thing. He may be a book smart person who has issues with the application of what he has learned. I said this before on Sick's show about 3 weeks ago and I'll say it again. The defense that Nolan uses relies on a great deal of man to man coverage. The one thing you don't have to do is think in man to man, you just follow the man's hips. My point is that if there is an issue with how quickly Allen translates information then removing it by primarily playing man to man means that one of his biggest issues may not be as important in this defense. In all honesty, he's never looked so good as he has this preseason. He is still just a bit off on some plays, but he always makes tackles and does come down with the ball if he can get to it. He does make INT's and has caused fumbles. Maybe just being able to react is the best thing for him. This is just me thinking out loud, so obviously I could be way, way off, but the defense is what it is.
I've thought about this as well. It makes sense. I just worry about him man. He's had quite a bit of mental lapses.
I really hope this is just to motivate Smith. Maybe now he will stop being such a nancy-boy and use his physical tools.
Jason Allen is HORRIBLE. Granted, Smith hasn't been much better and 0 INT's in the reg season isn't helping his cause. Still...Allen is HORRIBLE! I am getting a sinking feeling right now heading into this season.
One more thing is that it never says that there is no chance Smith plays in the game. Allen may well get the start and then be gone after 8 plays for the rest of the game. How long the start is for may be just as important as who is actually starting. If Allen plays a handful of snaps and then gives way to Smith is this as big a deal?
ha! He just isn't stronger, imo, in his upper body and needed to be able to be more physical with WR's primarily - especially in bump and run and using his upper body to control them better. He has such great size and he could be stronger and not lose speed. But I just don't see the physicality.
Well, the sneaky part of me thinks Chris Clemons has first ever Int this weekend. Bills will put Lee Evans on Jason Allen..we know what will happen then...Clemons or Bell will know it to, so will Nolan. Well, I still like Sean Smith's game, but at this point in time, Objectively, I do not see a dimes worth of difference between the two, maybe JA is more likely to turn the ball over for us. And JA is better at run support.
....and Smith will come in, pressing to hard to make a big play, and give up a huge play. We have already seen that happen this preseason. He comes in and on his first play he gets burned. This has bad news on it from all angles. From Allen getting playing time to Smith sucking. Bad...bad...BAD!
You're free to your opinion. My opinion is that Allen always has looked pretty decen when he's been in actual games, enough where I've always wondered why he didn't get more playing time. He's not this horrible player that people try to make him out to be. That is not to say that he's an all-pro, however.
Yup. I believe with a 3.8 GPA too. He is very intelligent. Football smarts don't require real smarts. Dan Marino had a low heimlich :P score, but could recognize the open receiver with the best of them. Hips don't lie.
had many of debate around these parts this offseason about J Allen making this team.. A few of us projected him at corner when he came in, as long as he can play aggressively at the LOS, he can trail nicely and use his hands and physicality. At least we can stop the debate about VD and Smith for now.....#21 is our #1 corner.
I've always held out hope that if they just decided on a position for Allen, he'd be fine. Not 1st round draft choice fine, but a decent player. This is now two years in a row in the same position for him and we see some progress. I listened to the detractors of Allen saying how bad he was, but when we watched him on the field, he was mediocre to good this preseason. You can say all you want about how he wasn't worth the #16 over all pick (and be right), however, you can't say his play has been that awful this preseason. You can say that about Smith's play, though....
Last yr they did do that, something about it was harder on young Corners to learn both sides of the defense? Anywho, you WANT Jason Allen on Lee Evans: Disguise the Safety help over the top and Edwards will put the ball up to Evans deep..
Tough to disguise safety help when that's the first read a quarterback has. Is it MOFC or MOFO? If its MOFC, the safety better not be leaning toward any single player until the quarterback is releasing the ball. If its MOFO, then there's likely a opening in the middle of the field. We've ran quite a bit of MOFC. Rotate at the snap.
I am not and could not speculate about J.A.'s book smarts. I'm only referring to his football intelligence. Now it has been my understanding from watching Nolan's defenses over the years that he uses a lot of man free. He's had success when relies on man coverage on the boundaries and has a ball hawk at FS. That would fit with the simpler scheme that allows J.A. to react rather than think. But that would also be Smith's strength, man rather than zone, since he has less experience relatively. Yet I keep hearing and observed some that Smith has struggled b/c he's being asked to play zone more than last year. It seems to me that most of the passes given up were in zone. They were mostly outside bracket coverage completed to the inside. Although I only recall him giving up one TD. The other TD where Smith ended up as the closest guy gets him blamed but he played it right. The error was elsewhere. And I saw the TD by Hurd. I felt that Smith (man on that play) was in good position, not perfect, but good enough that it took a near perfect pass to make that completion. Maybe Nolan has been playing more zone since we don't have that true ball hawk. And maybe Smith's struggles with the zone have caused him to spend more time thinking in both man and zone. I don't know I'm just thinking aloud, but I really have no idea what will be our primary coverage once the season starts.
Which is what I had in mind, though I suspect before they take that shot, they will run several toss plays to tune Bell and Clemons's awareness of the run and start moving in fast forward mode before they run a fake and take the shot. Which is where Clemons and his 4.3 speed had better be on the spot..no false steps. I'd also suspect some 8 in the box looks that shift to deep coverage responsibilities..
Its not personal. I just dont see how he fits with the kind of defense we are building. We are not a finesse team. We are physical..and he will never be that.
Lets hope it works out for the Fins. This is not anyone here vs Sean Smith. Its a collective opinion shared by many (and the coaches) that Smith is a liability. I dont see how any objective fan can question that. Unless of course, one is a fan of a player and not the team.
It was two bad choices. JA is better than SS. That is obvious to even an untrained eye. Obviously, Todd Bowles and Sparano both think so.
I wouldnt be surprised if SS is inactive. Does he play STs? The M.O. of this staff is to inactivate the last position players unless they are on STs.
I don't know that it's obvious (even to the coaches that) JA is better than SS. What is obvious is that they want SS to take his job more seriously, which is something they don't worry about with JA.
