No.Not by our coaching staff but by opponents.

    • A good sign: Linebacker Cameron Wake said he heard ``a lot of curse words'' from opposing linemen that he blew past in preseason. ``They're not going to be happy,'' he assured. What about getting double digits in sacks? ``Who's to say I can't? I've tried to add more pass rush moves.'' The Dolphins are very pleased with his improvement against the run. . . . OwnerStephen Ross thinks very highly of Jeff Ireland (who was given full personnel control by Bill Parcells) and believes his controversy involving Dez Bryant was unfairly portrayed, Ross' close associate said. . . . The Dolphins told end Marques Douglas it's possible they might re-sign him, but likely only if a need arises.

If Wake duplicates last seasons "pace" then double digits isn't the question. The question becomes does he get to 20?

    Consider:
    167 plays last season
134 of which were pass rushes
    7 sacks
    6 QB hits
    20 QB pressures

This is better then some of the best in the game including Tuck, Freeney, Peppers, Cole, and Umenyoria in terms of snaps per pressure and snaps per sack. That doesn't necessarily put him on the same level just yet or make him better but there is a very good likelihood in my opinion that the pass rush stats will not only be there but it will be a serious force to be dealt with.

Also consider Parcells/Ireland's last two linebacker protege's in Dallas. Anthony Spencer and DeMarcus Ware had the two most impressive sacks/hits pressure lines in the NFL last year. I do not believe at all that Wake and eventually Misi will be any different. Thats not just optimism thats based on two plus decades of Parcells 3-4 OLB's killing QB's.

Ware: 15 sacks 19 QB hits 61 pressures
Spencer: 9 sacks 29 QB hits 27 pressures (league leader in hits)

What separates those Dallas OLB's and makes them great is their run defense. Spencer and Ware were two of the best in the entire league versus the run at any position while Wake wasn't in the top three on his own team in run defense at his position. Now I don't want to compare Wake to the Dallas linebackers here...the point is that if you want to have a great 3-4 defense find outside linebackers that will play the run well as well as pass rush. They cannot strictly be downhill rushers. It is no coincidence that Pittsburgh in 2008 and Dallas in 2009 were two of the best in Points Per Game Allowed and Yards Allowed.

Long story short, we know Wake can rush the passer. If he improves versus the run we are going to have a sick defense.

Lets not forget the Nolan factor. He helped make a guy pretty darn good in Denver

This is going to be a great year for Wake. I honestly think he will have a Pro Bowl season and what's his face? Oh,popcorn muscles that we released will see why Cameron Wake was favored last year.

Just wait until Nolan sends blitzes underneath Wake's speed rush arc, talk about "open path to the Qb"..sort of like a twist on the edge instead of the interior of the Dline.

I'd love to see Wake take down the all time season sack record..what is it?

22.5 by Ogun? Taylor had over 20 once, so did Doug Betters.

I will point out that Wake has one huge flaw in his game as a passrusher:

He rarely manages a Strip/Sack, Wake's odd in that most passrushers kinda punish the Qb, he more or less wraps up their hips and pulls them down, imho he would really benefit from developing a Derrick Thomas/LT/J Taylor chop on the football/Qb's arm.

I noticed this too, but in many regards, I am okay with him being a fundamentally good tackler who almost assuredly gets the tackle every time versus the occasional fumble/strip that those other guys get/got at the expense of a QB wriggling free on occasion and scrambling/throwing for a quality gain.

That and it is hard to throw a roughing the passer flag when he basically lays the Qb down like a newborn.

With his speed though, he really should work on the sack/strip as there will be times when he beats the tackle cleanly and has a free and unfelt chance to make a play on the Qb.

20? If Wake gets 12 sacks, I'd be very happy. They won't come nearly as easy as last season; in part due to the fact that he wasn't on the field much so OT's couldn't really get much of a feel for his moves & speed; and second the fact that he was also very fresh when he came in. That won't be the case this year as he'll be on the field a lot more - which gives him more pass rush opps but also will wear him down more as he deals with the run and allows O-linemen to get a feel for his quickness.

It's sort of like a MLB pitcher. It takes some time for hitters to adjust to him. So, a number of pitchers come up from the minors and their first outing looks great. After 2-3 hitters figure them out. That's when the real test comes. It even happens within games, by the 3rd time through the order, it's more difficult to get guys out as they see what you are doing.

Same thing for Wake. It's one thing to come in and throw smoke in relief (ala Joba Chamberlain a few years back). It's quite another to become a starter going the whole game.

Not being pessimistic. But, he is really going to be challenged to prove himself in a very different way this year. I hope he's up to it and hope that Nolan's D will spotlight Wake and furnish him with multiple pass rush angles and opportunities as he is so quick in the 5-7 yard range.

Da 'Fins is right. He'll be tracked more this season and gameplanned. I think Nolan will likely adjust as Capers did with JT by moving him around a lot. IMO, that is why Misi was moved around, to see if he can handle it.
