    2 things:

-Psyched that Sparano took Returns seriously

-Lumbala did sign with BC, meaning someone moved to the practice squad.

Sparano added Carpenter and Smith, two players who really make their bones on the Special Teams, so now every unit has been improved.

Bonamego's unit has been rebuilt, Smith for Ginn AND Bess, Sapp for Jones, Carpenter for Torbor, Jones for Clemons.

I can, what I cannot believe is the ST unit is looked at like a real unit that needs guys who do specific jobs and is not just a dumping ground for newbs who go through OJT and suck while doing so.

That guy is a pro bowl KR/PR. Maybe you don't care about field position, but I sure as hell do.

As for the question, my guess is one of the 2 OL go, or the DE we picked up. Rose I think his name was.

He's a RB, right? So... it'd probably be a RB that gets cut... Lex Hilliard?

Hidden nugget is, Smith was in the CFL for a time before making the Tampa Practice Squad.

Love this move..."IF" it turns out to be true, finding instant impact Returners is as hard as finding 3 pt shooters who come off the bench in the NBA, once you have one they are such an asset to the team.

Looks like we may have signed Clifton Smith from the Bucs.

Guy has returned a punt and kickoff for TDs. Looks like he might be able to help our lack of return ability. Sorry can't post the twitter account I'm on my phone.

Bro, we all know Sparano, do you really think he would have a Rb with great open field ability and not find "jobs" for him to do?

Our Tony Sparano? dude will munch his salad and think "hmm..I'd bet he could run the Jet Sweep..can he throw the ball? "

    :chuckle:

Assuming of course he does sign in Miami, "we" have also been around long enough to know a internet rumor is exactly that..a rumor until he is signed on the bottom line and they are forced to roster him..I'm cautious.

Looks like he has signed with the Dolphins. Hope he stays healthy, maybe he'll take two to the house against the Jets. ;]

If healthy he's significantly more valuable than Lex Hilliard and about 5-10 (at least) other reserves on our roster.

Smith is easily one of the best returners in football. We're talking about a guy who averages 28.3 yards per kick return in 67 tries. That is beyond consistent. To top it all off he gives you 12.1 yards per punt return. He solves TWO problems for us. Nolan Carroll has shown flashes but is still unproven in the return game, and Bess is merely a safety blanket. Smith can return both kicks and punts with the best of 'em. A Pro Bowl caliber dual return man.

This is awesome. I traded for him in my Madden 11 franchise back in August. Had him in Madden 10 as well.

    Good stuff.

I was watching a Bucs game at some point this preseason and the commentators were calling Smith a bubble guy. I was baffled.

None of our receivers are scrubs. Marshall is one of the best, Hartline will be his compliment, Bess is one of the better slot receivers in the game, and everyone loves the potential in Wallace and Moore.

Wallace & Moore (in terms of value) > Hilliard. Not even close, IMO.

Besides, adding Smith would give us 5 total RB. I doubt we keep 5 RB and 4 WR. Hilliard goes.

The thing with Lexxy is, he was productive in 09, imho if he were waived he would be quickly signed by teams like the Rams or Broncos, or even the Pats.

Add in cobbs and smith are more role players, and who fills in for Ricky or Ronnie?

When he's not a returner, the kid has bacon grease for fingers. 18 total rushes & catches with 4 fumbles. I'd like to know WTF the Bucs were thinking after they let it get to 3!!!

Well, much of that has to do with three things:

-Sammie Stroughter is a good returner

    -Michael Spurlock is also

-Running the 4-3 means Special Teams is short of linebackers.

Add in Smith has fumbleitis as a Running Back and Tampa's desperation at Wr and adding a 5th or 6th Wr and letting Spurlock or Stroughter handle returns made sense for that Team.

Clifton Smith is a specialist, Tampa is rebuilding and he did not fit in with what they needed, similar to the Steelers waiving Stefan Logan, it was not that he was poor at his job, but Roles do matter on a 45 man Gameday roster.

In Miami, if he is signed, we have room for a single purpose Returner, sort of like a punter or long snapper, in Tampa they did not, add in the inflammation in his leg (a gout like condition, not gout) and already having Spurlock and Stroughter and Smith became expendable.

And "if" he does sign, keep in mind the Bills gutted their special teams, and Bobby April left, a sort of Rex Ryan of Special teams, and Smith provides a Matchup advantage from Game #1.

Yeah, but if it were me, I'd use him solely as a return man. Not just because of the fumbles but because he's been pretty fragile of late.

Now catching a pass in the flat? I'm all for that.....

I want Lex to go because I'm not a fan. I've liked Ian Johnson since last year. Guy who was with the Vikes in camp. I think he's better than Lex. He's on the Cards PS now and I wouldn't mind picking him off.

We have 10 OL. That is too many to have on the active roster when often only 7 dress for games. I think Parnell is most likely to be waived and signed to PS.

    No.

As of last night he was on his way to Miami.

If they are to sign him we will hear more Wednesday late afternoon most likely.

And yes considering how many projects we have in the bottom of our lineup I surely don't mind moving one of those weekly inactives to a guy who will at least participate.

I also think this is a move to scale back Nolan Carroll's workload. Sparano was mentioning they were putting a lot on his plate. Maybe they are just letting him focus on being a CB for now.

    I like the bolded....

Free agent KR Clifton Smith is reportedly set to sign with the Dolphins.

The Dolphins were far from convinced that Nolan Carroll and Patrick Cobbs were the answer on kickoffs returns. Smith is likely to take over punt-return duties from Davone Bess as well. If healthy, he's one of the best specialists in the business.
