From what I have read as well as seen, Mike Nolan's scheme turned the Denver defense around last year shooting them up the rankings from 20+ overall to 12 I believe. But I have also hear a lot of talk that state Nolan's defense kinda regressed the 2nd half of the season. Most say this is due to the fact that offenses began to figure out what Nolan was doing in certain situations and down and distances throughout the course of the year.

My question to you guys (those of you that know more on defensive scheming) is do you think that will happen again with the Dolphins this year? If so, why doesn't Nolan change it up or readjust to the offenses during the 2nd half of the year, or whenever it is that they begin to figure out what the defense is doing?

Also, I know we can all agree to hate the Jets and probably even Rex Ryan, but we must give him credit where its due. His defense was the best in the league last year, and has been among the best defenses in the league when he was with the Ravens. My question is, why can't these great defensive minds, like Mike Nolan, study these elite defenses and sort of try and mimic or fuse the scheme with their own knowing that its a proven system? This is obviously assuming they don't do that of course.

Any knowledgeable people's opinion on the subject will be greatly appreciated.

Any offensive coordinator worth their salt is going to be able to figure out what the defensive coordinator is doing and vice versa by viewing game tape and tendencies of the opposition. There's only so much a team/player can do to disguise their coverage which, based upon my signature, is part of what I believe nolan does on defense.

The other thing is offenses evolve faster than defenses, and once a defense has been figured out it's not too hard to scheme ways to steam roll it. It happened with the 46 as an example, and it happens all the time.

Rex Ryan as a baby was suckled by Nolan, hence the D the Jets have.

The biggest thing with Nolan's defense is that if the defensive line can get consistant pressure then it's really hard to stop. Denvers line was not that good and the blitzes worked for nearly half of the season but once teams knew where a lot of the blitzes were coming from, and that they did not have to double any on the lineman, they could pick them up with relative ease....

Conu created a good video of Nolan's defense in Denver.

defense allowed 127 points first half of the season
defense allowed 200 points the second half
you know there is a problem when KC puts
up 44 points against your defense

That video does not make me feel easy about this season, considering we don't have the secondary talent/experience that Denver had last season (Dawkins/Bailey/Goodman/Hill). Also I think it's safe to say Denver had better pass rushing with Dumervil.

Bailey is an Elite corner, Vontae is working on it.

"But" if one notices, there were Wr running free without a Safety in sight.

That is what happens when your SS is 36 and your FS is 30 with little speed to begin with..keep in mind that secondary was made up largely of Dolphins Castoffs and FA's..best Dlinemen, Holiday was also a cast off.

They had no one along the lines of Dansby or Starks or Bell or Langford.

IMO, for this D to be successful, we need an unmovable person at the NT position. Until then, its an experiment in the works.

It would sure help to have that NT position locked down. Starks is a BEAST, but can he be a BEAST at NT? We will have to see.

Starks will be even more of a beast at NT and Soliai will come in and allow Starks to take his bestiality to DE again on a fair number of snaps. I believe Nolan has far more talent to work with here than he did in Denver. The youth we have will help as well, especially later in the season when I believe Denver's players started to wear down.

    over there
    my opinion is this:
Denver had gotten tired (a bit) by mid season. They have alot of ex-fin players there in the secondary:lol:..
they also grew tired of their new coach? I don't know, but maybe?
brandon had his problems that affected team chemistry, trading cutler was unexpected also, but probably had nothing to do with this.
elvis had an all pro season.that always helps when you have a quick edge rusher that leads the league in sacks.
didn't nolan seem to have problems with mcdaniels also? i mean he left the damn team after the turn around they had and he leaves?
all these things could take a toll on a team by mid season, correct?
