My pops was diagnosed with heart failure earlier this week. Today doc told us that he most likely will have to apply for disability, because he won't be able to do any physicall work (and he is in the construction bidness) He might need a bypass surgery. My question, does anybody have any experience with having disabled family members, and how are the benefits determined.
for disability, its all determined base on reported income and ss paid throughout the years, you get an annual report about 1 month prior to your birthday that tells you the expected income at retirement, income if you become disabled, and income spouse and minor children get if you die collecting is a different story, often takes 4-5 times to apply, no only does he need to get his doc to help him with the proper forms and recommendations, he needs to be seen by an ss doc that will determine if he is.... good luck
I see you said income, but what if he hasn't been in he country for that long, under 10 years. How does that impact it?
anditsgood is correct. Not sure if his employment history will matter in the allowance of the claim but it will in the amount. My first wife went on disability when she was diagnosed with cancer. Having also been a polio survivor she was accepted on the first try. That is VERY rare. She got about 75% of her prior three years wages though at the time they were virtually tax free so that amounted to about the same take home. Good luck to you. The forms are tough and you need the doctors help big time.
Thnx. Doc said it right off the bat, and he said that he will help us out with paperwork. We will see, I guess.
Might want to call and ask or search the internet: Try here: check here No seriously try here: apply here or here check here Just remember anything with a .gov is where you want to be..........
history (as in time worked) matters because you need so many weeks paid into ss in order to be able to collect--its not really all that long, 18 months i believe if hes borderline, he may want to hire an attorney to help assist with the proper forms and filings
my moms on disability. i can't offer you much in terms of the process but i know i hear a lot of complaining about it. or used to. apparently the process was a major pain. i had to go to court with her on one occasion. best of luck and since you've got an awesome person willing like my mom had hopefully it goes about as smooth as it can.
