I believe that Smith, aside from QB's, was the only player not to see the field last week. That had to piss him off.

I take nothing away from Jason Allen, who player really well. However, I cannot see Smith sitting on the sidelines. Anyone hearing anything?

It was posted not too long ago that he will play tomorrow. Hopefully he uses this experience as motivation.

Sean Smith is our third best boundary corner, our worst slot corner, and he doesn't play special teams. I hope for his sake that he was watching how the defense dominated without him, and learning from the experience.

Think adapting to Nolan's D comes into the picture?

Yes, Smith is our best pure cover corner, his problem has been adapting to Nolan's system (which has been in the papers) and I also believe he got a big head in the off season and took his spot for granted.

Hopefully this is his wake-up call.

Smiths weakness is run defense and tackling.

Think you hit the nail on the head. He is having trouble adapting to a new scheme and he seemed to come off a bit full of himself in interviews and stuff. Hopefully not playing a down last week is the wake up call he needed.

I did read that J Allen said Nolan's system was perfect for him but, did not see anything on Smith. What was said?

Smith did add 10 pounds of muscle in the off season, did look better in tackling in pre-season, and I thought he was primed for a really good year.

I expect he'll concentrate a little more on football and a little less on Twitter. If he's smart.

You really think so? I haven't really seen any evidence that he's a better cover man than Davis. He also doesn't tackle as well as Vontae does.

I can buy into the big head part - hopefully this wakes him up and gets him to focus in on his craft. He was/is raw as a corner since he only played there a couple of years before being drafted.

Caroll's probably going to get shafted this week. Not sure how they make up for that on STs.

It's too bad you can't really find a depth chart for STs.

I may be WAY off base here but he reminds me alot of Travis Daniels. I believe Sean Smith is a much better athlete than Travis was but the things he does on the field remind me ALOT of what Daniels did in his 2nd yr. By his 3rd year he was out of the league.

Watch the games last year and see for yourself.

The staff thought so also, he started all 16 games, Davis didn't.

I think Davis is the better all around player, but in terms of pure coverage, I believe Smith is better (when his head is screwed on right).

I hope this isn't another DeAngelo hall. He got a HUGE contract with the Raiders but the new system didn't fit him so he was cut mid-season. Now he's styling all over the Cowboys on the Redskins.

In my opinion Smith's problem is immaturity. If you read his tweets, you'll know what I mean. Also overconfidence. I get the feeling he felt he was entitled to be the starter. Hopefully being benched is a big blow to his ego and gives him extra motivation to win back the starting job.

That's what the stats say. Now how much stock you put into PFF is your call, but Smith was better than Davis from a coverage standpoint according to them.

all last yr during preseason he showed great promise and even looked to be better then my boy Vontae! but now Vontae is starting to show signs of a shut down corner and Sean Smith has become a corner who has been shut down (atleast for week one) lol

I have no expectations for him, I learned my lesson about expectations from CBs after Jason Allen

LMAO are you his agent or something? B/C If you think Sean Smith is our best anything, then you've either lost your mind, or you catch all of our games on the radio. He's not warming the bench because he's better than our other corners.

Vontae didn't start b/c he was being groomed as a LCB (behind Will Allen), aka the guy who guards the other teams' number 1 WR. If anything, it was a mistake to start Smith over Davis. A mistake that has since been corrected, I might add.

Definitely. Nolan calls alot of man coverages, and he blitzes alot. That requires corners who can play man without allowing long completions, and corners who can make tackles when they allow the inevitable short-intermediate completions. Jason Allen is better in both facets IMO, and the coaches seem to agree. Allen is also better in run support, he's a much better tackler, and more physical in taking on/beating blockers. The tape doesn't lie, Allen is a better player period if you ask me. Sean is still a raw, second year player, so there's no need to bury him. But he has some serious flaws in his game, and he doesn't seem to take his job as seriously as he should so I completely agree with putting him on the bench for now.

    What are you Davis's agent?

Goes both ways, watch the games last year, who started 16 games?

Who did the staff start over Davis?

Is he the best right now? NO (for reasons I explained)

    Was he last year? Yes

My mind is fine, maybe you should search yours? :wink2:

Ya, someone posted the stats comparing Vontae and Sean from last year and Sean had allowed less yds and completions than Vontae did and Sean obviously played a whole lot more.

Sean was a weak link even last year to be honest, same as Gibril, Akin, and Joey. The difference is Sean's was a rookie and his struggles were to be expected somewhat. Add in his apparent complacency, and a talented plus hungrier potential replacement and voila, Sean is on the bench. I hope he learns from the benching, and starts taking things a bit more seriously, but we'll see.

Vontae was taken in the first round, so clearly he was viewed as the better player. He was also groomed as the better player, the successor to Will Allen on the left side. In reality, Sean started but he was rotated in with Davis, and IMO Davis played MUCH better. They both allowed alot of plays. But Vontae was burnt by the likes of Steve Smith, T.O. Randy Moss etc while NFL legends like Maurice Stovall and Sam Aiken got the best of Smith. Vontae had four picks, and one that was ruled out of bounds vs Houston. He made several big hits, forced a couple fumbles, and was a beast in run support. Smith had no picks, no big hits, he sucked in run support, and IMO Davis was the better overall player. Its not even close. Vontae is faster, quicker, more physical, better tackler, better ball skills, better period. The coaches seem to feel the same way. I'm just sayin,.

I'm thrilled they are making him earn his spot. It's the right way to handle young athletes.
From what i heard, Vontae worked his tail off in the offseason, even before OTA's and mini camps. Didn't hear the same thing about Smith.

Tells two different levels of desire and work ethic in my opinion. I would guess the coaches noticed it as well.

As many mentioned i too hope this is the wakeup call for him and he doesn't waste his next opportunity and realize the door out of the NFL is a slippery slope.

Preseason week 3, Smith gets ROASTED on an out an up move by Roddy White. Same move Roddy used to smoke Sean in week 1 last year. But, Ryan overtthrows the ball. PFF calls that a target & incomplete. I call it Sean got roasted and lucked up on a bad pass. It all depends on how you interpret the stats. If Jake Long blocks his man well but the QB holds the ball for 6 seconds, its still called a sack allowed by some. I call it a dumb QB who doesn't know when to get rid of the ball and/or WRs who cant get open. It's all subjective.

Smith did look somewhat lost this pre-season. I do disagree on his attitude. You don't put on 10 pounds of muscle in thinking your position is secure.

Kind of funny that J Allen couldn't adapt to our previous systems until Nolan came along and pushed aside S Smith and the same time. Gotta be a way to utilize Smith better

I don't know if he looked any different this year than last, I think it has more to do with the coaches having more confidence in Jason Allen and what he can do do accomplish what we need at corner in Nolan's system. I still think Sean has a good chance to be a player for this team, but he's going to have to earn it. No more handouts, which is a good problem to have from Sparano's perspective.

He's been the whipping boy for quite a while now, but in the periods where he's seen extended playing time, he's never been awful by any stretch. he was decent at FS in 07 and at CB in 08. This year he has a chance to what he can do, and I'm hoping he does well. Locking down Lee Evans is a good start, lets see what happens now...

Exactly Sean Smith has been handed a challenge, one he has to respond to and he also has to be ready at ALL times to go into games as whilst I like the Jason Allen Story, if the Air Raid begins Smith could find himself on the Field and quickly.

Cb's have to prepare for Wr's the same way De's prepare for Tackles, whether they are starting or not, Smith will probably have a chance to show he has prepared himself to play Corner even when he doesn't think he will play.

That's exactly what I'm saying. What has Sean Smith done to warrant his praise? He has poor tackling ability and gave up too many big plays last year without intercepting a single pass during the season.

seriously everyone needs to stop acting as if the decision for Jason Allen starting over Sean Smith was a "moral decision" to "challenge" him. Just stop it ok, this isn't pop warner football. Jason Allen just outplayed Smith in practice and has more years under his belt so he knows better what to do in terms of prearation and how the NFL game is played.

Riight, bro are you buying into "Jason Allen went and worked out with his high school trainer and learned better footwork and recognition by pushing buttons as they lit up?"

I like a Rocky story more than most, but there were reasons why Smith started 16 games last season, and why Jason Allen played the majority of snaps in only 2.
