I found this to be a little odd....

    -- Dolphins No. 2 QB Watch --

Tue Sep 21, 2010. The Palm Beach Post reports Miami Dolphins QB Tyler Thigpen was listed as the team’s No. 2 quarterback with QB Chad Pennington the inactive third quarterback for the Vikings game. It was a reversal of the order at Buffalo. Was there a specific package of plays in place for Thigpen, who didn't play against the Vikings? "I'm out of the loop in that information," HC Tony Sparano said while shaking his head and suppressing a smile. "Good try." Thigpen, who said he was informed during the week that he would be the reserve quarterback, didn't bite, either. And he objected to the suggestion that his skill as a runner might have been the reason he was active for the Vikings game. "The playbook is open to all three of us," Thigpen said in also including starter QB Chad Henne. "I'm a quarterback. I'm not out there to run the ball."

There has been rumors of a Thigpen Wildcat package.

Would love to see us use some trickery at some point against the Jest. Just so we can hear more whining from Ryan about playing 'highschool plays' or whatever idiotic reason he comes up with for getting beat.....then going on to use the same plays later on in the season against someone else.

That would be interesting. Very interesting to see. I know Thiggy is pretty mobile, but would he be a really good runner in open field? Or is this more for up the gut kind of runs like we tried to do with Pat White last year? Sounds more appropriate for me for Thiggy given that he's a bigger dude if I'm not mistaken. Either way, with Thiggy back there you'd have to honor the run and pass as a defense, since Thigpen is at least capable of completing a pass unlike White.

That is just one of the million reasons I hate Rex Ryan. He cries and says it's a gimmick offense that's not real football, then uses his own version of it. But a wildcat package with a real QB at the helm would be interesting.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Thiggy is pretty mobile and he can actually complete a pass. At this point I would be surprised if we didn't unleash that this week against the Jets.

Can Thigpen run at all? I mean, I know he's no Barry Sanders, but statistically does he have a decent 40 speed?

That is a strange switch from games 1 to 2, unless Penny had a minor injury or sickness in the later part of the week.

As you stated, the Wildcat package requires a guy who is a legit threat to run it up the gut to maintain the mismatch. A serious passing threat would definitely add another dimension.

Coach Lee can explain it better than I.

I have always wondered what they were working on behind closed doors with Thiggy and if he was going to replace everything that they tried to do with White but failed. Is Thiggy the new Pat White or just another QB with some skills? I guess that remains the big question.

I know they have to be up to something because our wildcat as of late (the tail end of last year and the beginning of this year) has been anything but "wild". They seem to run the same running play (Ronnie up the middle for 3 or 4 yards) almost every time. There isn't anything wild in that and I know that they are not going to abandon the package so something big has to be coming.

I remember back in the 70's when Shula called an onside punt! (ya you read it right. "an onside punt") It went for 40 yards and a TD. No one knew what hit them and even the refs were stunned. The point is; when you have a team full of multi-talented players (like we do) the sky is the limit. I wouldn't want to be in Rex Ryan's mind this week because there is no way to fully prepare for the Dolphins talent.

Thigpen was going to be made a WR in KC if he wasn't traded. The year he played in place of Huard, he rushed for 400ish yards. He's not Michael Vick, but he can run.

A-FREAKIN"-MEN! Most teams have a one player that can do one thing only. Our players can do many things and do them all well. If our defense continues to play great and we can get our passing offense going we will pulverize the JEST :tongue2:

I have always been a big Thiggy fan, and I have taken heat for it weeks ago because people didn't understand my comments. Liking Thiggy doesn't mean that I don't like Henne, I am a huge Henne fan, it just means that I like Thiggy's change of pace.

Henne and Thiggy are different types of QB's. Henne is a cool and collected pocket passer, and Thiggy is an emotional, mobile, play action QB. We'd blow everyone's minds if we alternated starting QB's wouldn't we? I doubt this would happen but it would be fun to watch.

    Wood/Strock anyone??

I still love watching Yeremiah Bell run down Jamaal Charles in that video though; Game saving play. I do feel that Thigpen might have been a little less effective against us in that game if we had Crowder out there. As much as people want to hate on Crowder, he adds consistency to the MLB spot when he's out there. The defense seems to flow better with him and maybe it's because his early film work with Zach helps him recognize plays quicker and get the rest of the guys lined up.

Are we just playing some shenanigans with Thiggy so the Jets have to spend time preparing for a ThigCat that might not exist?

Who knows? Anything is possible at this point.

Cobra hit the nail on the head though. The wildcat hasn't been anything special dating back to Ronnie's injury in the middle of last season. So either they're planning something epic with it starting this week in a big divisional game, and home opener. Or they're just not so into using it anymore. My guess is that it's the former and we will see some nice, unique wrinkles starting Sunday night.

Can only have an onsides punt after a safety. Same rules apply ball traveling ten yards (not 100% on the distance) and its a live ball just like on a kick off.

This is not TOS at all because I compared the old multi-talented Dolphins to the team that the Jets will face on Sunday and the potential pkg that could exist with Thiggy. This is the first multi-talented team that I have seen come out of our locker room that compares to the good old days and if any team could pull "a Thiggy" it would be this one. The trick is to get the other coach preparing for so many things that he prepares for none of them thoroughly. This team – like the old team - can do that.

Shula's onside punt went like this: He lined everyone up in regular punt formation then had the guys with the best hands run out 10 yards and linger. The punter hit them in the back making the ball live so it could be recovered on the spot of a first down; except it went for a TD because no one could figure out what was going on and the defense was stuck in return formation with their heads firmly planted anally.

I remember the play but not a safety. That's not to say that there wasn't a safety – I just don't remember one. We're talking more than 30 years ago and the rules were very different. Rules can change year to year - let alone decade to decade. Needless to say the game is much different than it used to be.

That's why it is impossible to compare the undefeated Dolphins with the undefeated Patsies of a few years ago. The game was very different then. For instance; in those days a DB could maul the WR throughout his entire route, today that cannot be done. Also - spygate didn't exist either.

:shifty: (Ever notice that as soon as spygate ended so did the super bowl appearances?)

It was after an intentional safety. The rules for a regular punt don't allow for an onsides punt. The ball simply isnt live unless touched. Also the rules for a kick off and a Punt after a safety are virtually the same.

Here is a PDF of the 2007 NFL rules. Page 17 Rule 3 section 15.

    • Onside Kick:
      • If a kicker obviously attempts to kick a ball short and the ball never goes 20 yards, it is defined as an onside kick (this also applies to a safety kick)
The rule book seems pretty clear on the issue but you do have to sort through a lot of stuff. Even in week one against buffalo they tried to pull of the an onsides punt. Its why they kicked it short and why we had our hands team out on the field. B marsh is NOT part of our standard punt return team.

Also it didn't go for a TD.

Anyway I hope this clear the matter up.

Also here is a write up that David Hyde did on it as well.

    • The onside punt in 1980. Down 16-7 to Cincinnati, having just suffered a safety, Don Shula had punter George Roberts skid the ball the requisite 10 yards to make it a live ball. The Dolphins recovered, drove for a touchdown and then added a late field goal to win.
