ok, i've been watching the first episode(netflix) for about 20 minutes...and i had to dig up this thread. this show is so friggin bad. the over acting, the gratuitous cursing. im fine with gratuitous nudity, but this show is so bad so far. the directing and writing. the opening scene when they cut to who i assume is spartacus' and his wife..and they say good bye then cut to her face and she is drenched with those fake tears because she's too much an amateur to cry on camera. ( lol they did it again!) the one dopey village dude curses and talks like a barbarian ozzy osbourne. i loved rome. that show was so well written and acted. but this..how much better can it get? does it get a bazillion % better because this is near unwatchable. The director is trying so hard to shoot this thing like Frank Miller. And the actors seem like a bunch of amateurs and strippers. But some of you guys are calling it amazing television...
alright well it ended decently, but gods, i was rooting for his wife to die just so she wouldnt be in anymore episodes.
It gets better. I liked Rome more, but this was pretty damned good. Sent from my HERO200 using Tapatalk
i like the disclaimer about the "intensity" to give a realistic portrayal of ancient Rome. as if there was slow motion, and every woman was clean shaven and had breast implants.Very honest depiction of the time there. But the show is a million times better now since the first episode. it can hide behind the gladiator angle safely without pissing me off.
nothing more than nudity, foul language and violence, boorish story imo. to say it is better than dexter is blasphemous imo.
It's not better then Dexter but it's in the top 5 shows out there right now. For me my top 5 active shows are Dexter, True Blood, Doctor Who, Spartacus and Stargate Universe.
Umm you also just described Dexter..... Last season was the best since Season 1. Spartacus Blood and Sand progressively got better after the pits. It was must see television.
Madmen and Breaking Bad are way superior as far as overall better shows. True Blood is off to a bad start this season. Spartacus has gotten way better. I mean, I still can't believe how poor the first half hour of this series was. It was laughable. And I have an issue with the main story line as I'm rooting for his wife to die...but its pretty entertaining overall. It can't touch Dexter. There's not too much gratuity in Dexter, its a solid show.
Mad Men bored the hell out of me. Breaking Bad is in my top 10 due to amazing acting....but it's not in the top 5 due to the way it drags on at times. I also am into a couple of lighter procedural type shows such as Burn Notice & White Collar & Warehouse 13.
language doesnt bother me, but it does seem a little out of place in the S: B&S setting to me. im not sure why exactly. the swearing seems forced and for effect. dexter rarely swears. deb swears because that who she is. i dont find dexter to be overly violent at all. if anything it restrains itself for a drama about a serial killer. most of the disgusting things in the show arent accompanied by action. its much more psychological dexter is not oversexed at all. its pretty standard premium show nudity. S: B&S has people just walking around naked for little reason
You want to see overdone swearing try Deadwood: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpsKKPuTYCI"]YouTube- All the **********s in Deadwood[/ame]
Damn it, Spartacus grew on me like a fungus. It has gotten progressively better. It started as pure crap, and has won me over. I have 2 episodes left to watch and I'm wishing there were more. Wow, what a turn around.
holy closure! what an ending to a show!!! heroes, lost, all those string along B.S. shows could learn a thing or two here. Awesome. I did a complete 180.
TV's Spartacus: Blood and Sand star Andy Whitfield will not be returning to the Starz series for a second season, due to a recurrence of cancer that will require aggressive treatment, the network has announced. "It's with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from such an exceptional project as Spartacus and all the wonderful people involved," Whitfield, 36, said in a statement. "It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey." In March of this year it was reported that Whitfield, born in Wales and a resident of Australia, had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. "Our hearts and prayers are with Andy and his family during this difficult time," said Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht. "Andy is not only an incredible actor whose portrayal of Spartacus made an indelible impression on Starz audiences, he is also an amazing human being whose courage, strength and grace in the face of adversity have inspired all of us." I dont know how they are going to deal with the lead star Andy Whitfield not continuing.I read the book it was based on and the type casting was excellent right down to his broken nose. It may kill off the series .
Yeh he made that character. I hate to see them kill the series off but it may be next to impossible to cast that part again.
my wife really got into this show and she will be dissapointed that it doesn't continue. as for me i really enjoy time pieces like this but like others i struggled to get into it due to all the cursing(same reason i couldn't get into eastbound and down)..i don't mind curse words when used correctly but jeez really?i am no history buff or from that time period but i'm pretty sure half of the words they use weren't really the hip lingo in that time.seemed forced as others have mentioned and i don't mind the occasional sex scene(some of these woman are pretty hot but theres channells for that)but hbo fills a hr long show with 40 minutes of cussing and sex and 20 minutes of great story.it would be a much better show for me if it were the other way around.
Well the prequel hits soon so that's at least something. Give them a chance though on recasting. The show runner comes from the Joss Whedon family (Angel) and if there is one thing they can do is find unknowns that can hit it out of the ballpark.
I've got 4 episodes left to watch from season 1. I love this show. The idea it might be over for good really disheartens me.
the first episode was complete "poop". and the final episode was awesome. this show got so good throughout the season. im really hoping for a season 2.
I stopped reading this thread at the end of page 2 because I just found this show on demand yesterday, and watched the first 6 or 7 episodes. This is a badass show, and I'm also thinking I like it better than Dexter. I'll watch the rest tonight after work. Spoiler The last episode I watched last night was the one where the blonde's gladiator tries to kill Spartacus and loses his junk. A couple questions though... I know a story of Spartacus, so I think I have an idea where season 2 is headed. But was Spartacus a real person? I can't remember. A couple things I hope to see are: Spartacus finding out what REALLY happened to his wife Spartacus killing Blondie's husband right in front of her. I think at some point, Civix and Spartacus will become friends
Spartacus was a real person.A gladiator who led a slaves rebellelion. He was not crucified as shown in the movie. He was betrayed by another slave and killed. Most of the other captured slaves were crucified .....except for the women . The rest of the story in the series is fiction.
I finished watching season 1. That show was freaking amazing. Can't wait until the prequal. Wikipedia says that they did the prequal to kill time while the actor got over his cancer, but it came back, and they will be recasting the Spartacus character with the blessing of the original actor. So, it appears the series will continue.
Finally got around to catching it off Netflix, which also means I can read this thread. I agree first episode was kinda meh, then it started picking up and I couldn't put it down, saw last episode today. I still prefer Rome to Spartacus: Blood and Sand, but a good little show and hate to hear about the main character. Oh, and yeah Mira is a babe.
What? No comments on Gods of the Arena? Gotta say....only in this show can you get H.G. Wells (Warehouse 13) getting it on with Zena Warrior Princess ;p
Any show that starts with a dudes head getting lopped off and then 2 chicks getting boned is 2 thumbs up.
The best sex scene for me in the Spartacus series. I hope there are more scene's like that in the upcoming episodes. I love HG Wells character in Warehouse 13 and person playing her is extremely hot.
