Mort states Fins aren't too comfortable with Henne

Yesterday on the Dan Lebatard show, Mort states that he likes Sanchez over Henne because "I think he’s a better athlete, I think he’s more instinctive, or will prove to be more instinctive as he plays more. One thing about Chad is that he has four years of starting at Michigan and the upside of Sanchez is a little bit more.”

Later on, Mort stated: “The more I see Henne, and the more I hear out of the Dolphin’s camp is nobody is really comfortable right now….I go back to the fact that when you start four years in college and you play well at the end of last year, I’m expecting to see more. .”

I thought this was pretty interesting stuff, particularly the part about the Dolphins' brass starting to doubt Henne. I know it's only been two games, but remember this guy was pretty bad in the preseason too so something may be going on with his development. Let's hope he doesn't right the ship this weekend.

atleast he wasnt the 28th best qb out of 32 last year, with 20 ints and 8 fumbles........

but hey, henne didnt have the #1 defense to hide behind.....or braylon edwards.....or dustin keller....................

Sounds like conjecture to me based on low passing stats, nevermind that the low passing stats are the result of intentional game planning.

And if they’re trying to mold Chad Henne into Chad Pennington and are not pleased with the result, then that’s the coaching staff’s problem. That’s not the kind of quarterback Henne is.

Henne was like 9/14 sunday. 1 TD no INTs.

Let's not make it like he was Dave Brown back there, Mort.

It's been two games on the road and last I looked we haven't trailed yet.
Henne hasn't thrown a pick. Defense is brutal.

    We are 2-0 and homesick.
    Jets are entering a maelstrom.

add the fact that we have only five returning starters on offense and it's gonna take a little time for the unit to gel.i'm not gonna get worried till atleast week 6.

gil brandt is on sirius radio speaking on the same subject. gil's take was this:

they threw 549 passes last year and ran the ball 509 times. he then mentioned the 50/50 td to interception ratio. brandt said that they are making a concious effort to reverse the run/pass ratio with the expectation of a reward in the td to interception

typing on a phone sucks but i have to pass the gospel. brandt jumped on that callers question like he was told the numbers a minute ago..

I've been giving the first two games a lot of thought and the passing game has been steady, controlled and safe. I really do think that something has been held back because there were two huge division games this early in the season and just like pre-season something was going to be held back for these next two upcoming games. I'm not saying that they were looking to take a loss in either of the first two games but I suspect if the defense had not been doing what it was doing the offense would have been pumping harder through the passing game than it was.

I firmly believe that a lot was held out so that the Jets and to a lesser degree Patriots defenses couldn't game plan for the two biggest early season games for Miami this year.

I expect a lot more come Sunday than we've seen to this point.

We also have to remember that we have never been behind this season, so although more offense would have been nice in situations, there was no pressing need to start airing it out.

We are a team that is going to play conservative and pound the rock and keep unnecessary risk to a minimum. But that doesn't mean we won't pull out the guns when we have to, or want to (see play 1 against Minnesota).

Dead On. Truth be told on Sunday if the defense is dominant and the run game controls the time of possession I would be just as thrilled to see another 8/14 1 TD game from Henne and keep the barrels cool for the Patriots.

I listened to a good 20 hours of sports talk radio this week. The vast majority of all professional opinion is that the "Jets have sold their soul, chasing a championship". Mind you, a championship thats really not in their sites. I heard many comments regarding the "football gods", and "karma" working against the Jets.

I also heard my coach on two different outlets state, specifically(not coach speak), how and why Chad Henne has and continues to not only improve, but impress. He wasn't bogged down with double-talk about Unions and codes of conduct.

So...yeah...how do you feel about things?

So basically Mort says what we already know, the Dolphins coaching staff doesn't want to risk turnovers and are playing it safe. Thus, aren't comfortable with throwing the ball 50 times at the beginning of the season.

    Thanks for that "news", Beavis.

Now we can debate about a lot of things when it comes to Dolphins-Jets. But who has the better Quarterback is not one of them.

    Henne >>> Sanchez

edit: come to think of it, Pennington > Sanchez and Thigpen > Sanchez

if the OP thinks the staff is concerned about Henne meaning he's not a legit starter then he's smoking something. If they mean he hasnt grasped everything they want him to grasp in his 15th start then yeah. He's still a work in progress and will be for the next two years. You need three seasons under your belt before you can be expected to have progressed to expectations

First of all..darn you and your cute little howling wolf cub (not puppy!) in a field of flowers, the cuteness meter pegs in the red with it!

Secondly..it no longer takes 3 seasons, and really shouldn't, there is so much time effort and money involved in developing Qb's now, that has been compressed into about 2 yrs, maybe less.

And I'm not suggesting that Henne should be an All Pro Qb this year, I am saying he has been here 3 seasons with the same Staff, he should be up on what he needs to do out on the football field during a game.

I have some issues with Henne the Qb, but they are more or less technical ones that just take time to polish up.

The other thing is, Sparano is quite content to throw underneath all day long and drive down the field if that is what the defense gives them, so while Henne is not Phillip Rivers, he is staying within the offense and making the throws he is expected to make.

.[/QUOTE] we'll have to see how this season plays out to really gauge Henne's progress. I see some improvements, mainly in the touch passes, but there is still work to be done. I think we need to remember that he hasnt even started a full 16 games yet. Its nice to hold the clipboard your first year but you cant really progress that way. This is really his second year and alot of QBs if not most tend to have their sophmore slumps in year two due to opposing coaches having a full year of film on them, gameplanning to take away their preferences and the QBs not having the experience to know what to do when things are changed up on them. This will be as much of a learning year for Henne as last year. 2011 is when he needs to put it all together. This year I'm just looking for improvements here and there and hopefully he can handle all the new looks and wrinkles he'll see this year

    Boston, MA...
I saw a video recently (perhaps nfl.com preview) stating that since Rex has come to town the long ball has a 20% completion rate whereas the intermediate routes have proven to be a lot higher (forget the exact percentage). If they give us the intermediate, we are taking it...but do not be surprised if we take a few shots to keep them back off the line. Nonetheless, in this game more than any other...I see Sparano being content with the underneath stuff as you said.

No QB turnovers = a good game for this staff. I may be wrong, but it seems to me they have broken Henne down - think Phil Simms. A QB like Pennington with Henne's arm would be pretty nasty in this league.

    Interesting experiment for sure.

Thing is Adamp, he has had Henning and Lee as his coaches for 3 yrs now, the aspects such as play calling, routes, reads should be second nature to him by now as most young Qb's rarely have the luxury of continuity in the OC and QB coach when they first break into the NFL.

That alone should put him ahead of just being a 2nd yr starter, along with a good running game and Oline, Henne should have the training wheels off by now.

I think he does, I also think Sparanoid is dead serious about not turning the ball over, as in that overrules any other consideration at the moment, with the D playing so well, with no need to try to play catch up, Henne is Penny..lite..so far.

Only I really do believe they would let Pennington take more chances with the football.

The same Chris Mortenson who said Ronnie Brown would be traded, that Eli Manning will miss at least a month with a seperated shoulder, that Mike Shanahan will coach the Chiefs, that Kurt Warner has replaced Leinart as the starter long before he actually did, that Michael Vick wouldn't be indicted, that Ron Rivera would coach the Cowboys. Remember when Mortenson claimed Jeff Garcia had a hairline fracture in his back? He was wrong, and Jon Gruden ripped him a new ******* for it. Remember when he guaranteed Parcells was going to the Falcons? Never happened. Remember when he guaranteed Favre was not returning? Well he returned. He also reported something on Pat White that was incorrect and quite a few other things. He's even been called out by at least 1 ESPN co-worker.

Take anything this bumbling idiot says with a grain of salt. His reporting has been shoddy at best since 2007.

Back on topic, it's Henning, not Henne. The game has clearly passed him by. He had more weapons in Carolina, and still was extremely conservative, and Panthers fans couldn't wait to see him fired. With a 7 point lead, he's trying to run the clock out in the beginning of the 3rd quarter. Any competent OC would be stepping on the throats of the opposing team, not Henning. He plays for FG's, as opposed to going for 7 points. He's trying to turn a gunslinger into a Chad Pennington. How this fossil still has a job is beyond me, he should of been canned along with Pasqualoni.

Exactly, the wildcard is Dan Henning (whom oddly enough Sparano said of he is one of my guys..now) who ran the Redskins offence during their 80's glory yrs.

He has no problem running the ball and playing high percentage passes as that is exactly what he did in Washington and was highly successful at doing.

But Bro....this will not be thrilling offensive football unless it has to be.

:knucks: Well said. If the Triumvirate made one mistake this off season, it was not sacking Henning. Its the last thing holding them back. I expect if they analyze the season at the end, and realize it was Henning's playcalling that held us back - I fully expect there to be a change in OC's by next season (or 2012 if there is a lockout).

henning is probably a top ten offensive coordinator. no worse than 16th depending on your criteria. but like padre said this is a smash mouth offense so if you're expecting aerial fireworks this aint your team. if we were going to be a passing team matt ryan wouldve been a dolphin and jake long would be playing for someone else

Not a top 10 OC by any stretch of the imagination. Luckily, or not, I've had the opportunity to see him call plays for 8 years now. Panthers fans couldn't wait to see this laughably conservative OC holding a Superbowl team back fired, and now most Dolphins fans are starting to feel the same way also, and for very good reason.

Lets judge henne when he's actually in a position where he needs to throw. We control both games handly even though the score doesnt show it. If the OC had a killer instinct we should of put a 30 spot on the board and henne is very capable of that.

    It's not about aerial fireworks.

It's about being able to function as a balanced offense.
If the run game isnt there you better be able to throw the ball.
Even if you want to play the conservative approach of field position there are times where you're going to have to have the confidence to pass the ball to continue drives out of your end or you're going to put a lot of pressure on your defense.

There is clearly an issue early on here.

Whether it's doubt in Henne or Henning being stuck in a different era is what's debatable.

If we can't overcome it it will bite us in the arse and many of you will be whistling a different tune.

Our offense should be doing much better, but it's not due to Henne missing many throws or throwing INTs. Even our running game hasn't looked nearly as good.

Hopefully, the offense just needs a rabid home crowd on Sunday night to start clicking.
