injuries derailed the offense in his final season but you need to remember he got them to the Super Bowl and with Jake Delhomme of all QBs. Thats basically wrestling with one arm tied behind your back. Look at the improvement of the panthers offense from what it was before he got there and look at what carolina has done since he's left.

well if you listen to sparano there may be a thrid reason which is simply execution, namely the OL. Almost every game Sparano says we had big plays dialed up and somewhere during the course of the play something broke down, a missed block, a bad route, etc. Its only been two weeks, you'll start seeing more big plays as we become more polished but we'll still be essentially a running team that works off play action

Now hold on a minute there, Henning was highly successful in Carolina as the OC, they made the SB with Henning as the OC.

What have the Panthers done without him as the OC?

    Nada.

Really could use Hartline stepping into that mix as well, to easy to game plan for two Rb's and 1 Wr, we need a fourth threat.

Considering how tight-lipped the front office is on every other subject, is it really even believable that Parcells or anyone with the team would tell this to someone in the media?

I think there's a reason this is all coming out before the divisional games...watch the gameplan versus the Jets be for Henne to throw all over the place.

They weren't afraid of him taking chances last year against the Jets or Pats, but now all of a sudden a year later he's gotten this much worse? These media leaks are mainly used to either motivate a player or confuse an opponent, IMO.

Jake Delhomme was a very good QB in his prime. Just like Steve Smith and Mushin Mohammed were very good WR's in their prime. Just like Stephen Davis was a very good RB in his prime. All this and Henning still could only manage an average at best offense that held the Panthers back. The Panthers defense, that's how they made the Superbowl.

The Panthers offense ranked about the same as before Henning got there, as they were while he was coaching, and even after he left. Not much change in the rankings. Mostly middle of the pack/bottom half with a few exceptions.

There was an article posted a few days ago that made is seem quite obvious that Henning wants to play conservative and not force anything.

It makes perfect sense too. Last year, we saw Henne win games with his arm. We saw him throw the ball for over 300 yards, and we saw him win games on the final drive. Henne proved last year that he can get it done.

I'm not complaining about the playcalling now because we're 2-0 and though the offense hasn't been great, they've been effective. However, the play book needs to open up more as the season goes on because we can't expect the defense to bail us out every week. I expect the offense to open up Sunday night though.

If by highly successful you mean riding the coattails of a top 10 defense while his offense finished middle of the pack with a pro bowl QB, 2 pro bowl WR's, and a pro bowl RB, I agree.

disagree. he was OC for them from 2002 to 2006. he took them to the SuperBowl and the NFC Championship in five years worth of work. Thats an impressive resume anyway you slice it and he never had the best talent to work with. he always beat teams with better talent to get to the big games

This thread is based on an absolute and complete misinterpretation of what Mortenson said. Mortenson was referring to the entire offense not being comfortable with one another right now (not that the coaching staff or front office are uncomfortable with Henne).

Just another example of someone hearing (and/or seeing) what they want to in order to fit it into their personal viewpoint.

It's just like the nonsense about Marshall giving Henne a look last week after Henne missed him near the goal line. It didn't happen, but someone mentioned it here on the forum (and was quickly called out for it) and then one of our moron local journalists also made mention of it even though he admitted that he didn't even see it (just heard that it happened second-hand).

If anyone in the front office was not comfortable with Henne they would have:
    a) started Pennington
    b) cut Henne and moved on with Pennington as the starter and Thigpen as the backup

But that didn't happen (and won't happen anytime soon) because 75% of the NFL wishes they had a quarterback that could go on the road two straight weeks in a row and not throw a single interception, and roughly the same percentage of teams wish they had a quarterback who could go 9-6 with roughly 3,100 yards and a 61% completion percentage in his first 15 starts despite marginal WR/TE support in at least 13 of those 15 games.

Compare that to Mark Sanchez' first 15 starts with significantly better options at WR/TE (8-7, 2,444 yards, 53.8% completion percentage) and it's fairly clear who had the better start to their career.

Moreover, if you compare them in their first two games this year, here's what you get:
    Henne: 2-0, 61.2 completion percentage, 296 yards, 2 TDs, O INTs, 85.1 passer rating
    Sanchez: 1-1, 60.8 completion percentage, 294 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs 96.4 passer rating

Pretty much the same exact stat line. The biggest difference, of course, is that Sanchez had the benefit of playing both games at home while Henne was on the road for both.

In any case, this thread is utter nonsense as is the idea that Henne is somehow struggling. Short of guys like Roethlisberger and Brady, who both benefited from playing on teams that were fairly stacked in all phases of the game, Henne is starting his career off about as well as anyone could ask for.

Yea, Pro Bowl QB, 2 Pro Bowl WR's, a Pro Bowl RB, couple pro bowl lineman. Certainly no talent there. The year they went to the SB, 8th ranked defense. The year they went to the NFC Champiobship but not the Superbowl, 3rd ranked defense. Their success was because of their defense. Like I said, I've lived in Panthers country and have seen a **** load of Panthers games over the years so I can understand if you haven't been able to see as many Panthers games as I have, and as many Panthers fans wanting him fired as I have. There's no reason why Dan Henning still has a job in the NFL. His conservative, ground and pound philosophy does not work in today's NFL.

Personally, I have to watch Henne closely this game for my own peace of mind, I think the team around him is ready to compete at a hi level, he's gonna have to find his tempo, so far, imo, the speed of the game this year has not slowed down for him yet...Ive seen him much more comfortable, however, to come out of the gate in those two environment's, I think that is to be expected..I think its a big game for Henne , he's got to show why we called him iceman, handle his job, and play within himself and the offense, I dont think its the kind of game where we need to let him open it up, we can beat them without doing it, it's a big situation for him, {which he's been pretty damn good at} we need him to play UP to speed, with the rest of our players.

Play steady, just like last year, and we'll have progression out of our QB..

My expectations of him are, that he needs to play decent for us to win.

we're 2-0 this year, have been in the playoffs 1 out of 2 years after coming off a 1-15 season. yeah his offense doesnt work.

2003 was the only year where henning had smith, proehl, davis, foster and delhomme altogether and he took that offense to the superbowl when noone expected them to be able to get there. in 2004 smith and davis were lost to injuries and thereby derailed the season. in 2005 they made it to the nfc championship game but suffered a crucial injury to foster leaving them without a running game where they lost to the seahawks, and in 2006 his offensive line was crippled by injuries and an injury to delhomme had weinke starting a few games and yet they still finished 8-8

here are some quotes from the actual players

“He’s a good football coach, a very smart man,” Delhomme said. “I do miss him, but that’s coaching. Sometimes things just don’t mesh at certain times.”

“Dan Henning, he was good for us because he knew how to take the personnel and craft plays around what he had,” Panthers receiver Muhsin Muhammad said. “That’s what he’s doing in Miami. He crafted this style, trick plays, wildcat and all this different stuff.”

    http://www.prdailysun.com/index.php?page=news.article&id=1258598378

and as for carolina fans, i bet if you asked them now who would they ratgher have had, i would bet it would henning over davidson anyday.

Yet that offense finished 16th in 2003, and 22nd in 2005 while the defense which carried that team, finished 8th, and 3rd. You can defend Henning all you want, but we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one. I've seen his playcalling far too long to know we won't be winning anything meaningful as long as he's calling plays, unless the defense continues to play like a top 5 defense so it can carry the offense much like was the case in Carolina.

We have a young team and with all young teams there will be ups and downs. We have hung on to win a few games that lesser teams would have lost. Henne is progressing but he's not there yet. The same could be said for Sanchize.... The D has been dominating and aggressive...the same could be said for the jests D. The jests CBs have played above their ability (considering that Revis missed all of camp and has been rusty and is now hurt, Cromartie has had a good game and a not so good game...). The Fins CBs have had two solid games. Our team is all about youth at this point. We're due to have a lesser game sooner or later with all the youth. Henne is progressing but certainly not as fast as we would like. There is a debate on-going whether or not Henning is holding Henne back or vice versa. It makes sense that Mort, who is a controversy monger by profession, would try to stir some things up and really, has Henne shown anyone here that he's a Marino-in-waiting ?? Not yet....

Let's let the teams play it out and a loss won't be the end of the world for us...however, a loss for the jests could hurt their psychy pretty badly...that's the difference I see with these two teams...

Norv Turner used to say that a QB needs 1,000 attempts before you can tell anything about him. Chad Henne isn't quite there yet.

One thing to note here. Chad has attempted 49 passes in 2 games this season. Of those, only 3 have been thrown farther than 20 yards. Some of that may be on him simply not looking down the field, but I think most of it is the fact that the coaches are controlling the passing game at this point. They are running safe, high percentage passes, and this is largely the reason Miami's YPA isn't very high right now. Plus, we don't have great RAC receivers on this team. Chad is currently 21-31 on passes in the 1-10 yard range. He's only thrown 6 passes in the 11-20 yard range and is 4 of 6 on those.

At some point, the coaching staff has to let him try to take the top off the defense though.

Stats are for fools and I will show you why. If a team ranks:

    Offense 12th in points
    Offense 15th in total yards

    Defense 4th in points
    Defense 3rd in total yards

Would that team make the playoffs?

That team was the 2002 Miami Dolphins. They did not make the playoffs. And I'll do you one better in the "defense carrying the team" department. The Dolphins defense was BETTER than the Panthers defense in ALL of the Wannstedt years. Where did it get us? It certainly did not get us to a Championship game.

I sit here in Carolina. I see Carolina games. I listened to the fans crow about "this is the year". As a matter of fact, I was sitting in the stands when the Panthers eliminated the Bill Parcells led Cowboys from the playoffs. It was the same year that Jay Fiedler and Chris Chambers lit up the Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day. I was in Dallas on that day too.

Here is the TRUTH about Jake Del Homie. He was never any good. He had a good game against a subpar secondary at home during a playoff game. But as the Dolphins proved on Thanksgiving day, everyone could pass on the Dallas secondary. Jake Del Homie then receives a massive contract immediately after that year. He was signed as the QB of the future. Much of it was accrued on that single day that I was in attendance.

So let's examine the career of Jake Del Homie and see what Dan Henning learned:

2003 Jake Del Homie - 449 pass attempts and a championship game
    2004 Jake Del Homie - 533 pass attempts and a 7-9 record
2005 Jake Del Homie - 435 pass attempts and a championship game
2006 Jake Del Homie - 431 pass attempts and is limited to 13 games due to injury

You can ignore the facts. You can ignore that a formula for the passing game exists. But there are men that are paid very well to study this game and it all goes back to the my first post in this thread. It wasn't my genius. It was the genius of Gil Brandt. They are attempting to limit the pass attempts of the quarterback. And as you can see from the Jake Del Homie record, a great number of pass attempts gets you one of two things:

    1. A losing record
    2. Injured

Week 2 he faces a NE team with no pass rush and a weak secondary, throws 3 TD's and he's back on track to be their glamor boy

Bro, it boils down to Winning Games that is the absolute bottom line no matter where units rank, in fact I'd say a top ranked unit is almost a hinderance as the team relies on it to heavily.

That is why the Saints were never a great team until the Defense could play better, ditto the Texans, they had great offenses, they did not win games until the defense could play at least acceptably well.

Brees's Saints were a mediocre team until the defense improved
Brady had his second best yr stats wise in 09 and the Pats were slaughtered in the playoffs at home.

Manning is the modern day Marino, try and find another Qb as consistently brilliant as he is..go ahead..I'll wait.

It's amazing how no one ever has insight into Miami's FO and coaching brass yet everyone has unfiltered sources that "tell" them these things about Miami. We know just as much about the Dolphins on ThePhins as these "journalists". I've never seen a team uncomfortable with a starter keep him in the game and this is a FO willing to bite the bullet considering we cut a second and third round pick from one year ago.
