I thought Stallone was the opposite of self aggrandizing. He got butt kicked and never got to fight the guy again. I actually expected that cliche when he first lost. I also thought he let Bruce Willis appear like the bigger badass when they were on screen together.

I also disagree about the fight scenes. I'm a martial arts guy and I went with a buddy who is one of the greatest fighters I've ever met. He's an old school guy from back in the day when women and children didn't participate. At the dojo where he used to train guys who thought they were tough would walk in and challenge the sensei. These were military guys and bikers, that sort of guy. My friend was 14 years old then and skinny as a rail. The sensei would say "if you can beat the kid, I'll fight you". The sensei never had to fight a single challenger b/c my buddy never lost a fight. He had injuries and a few broken bones, but he still always won. We're talking about 100 fights or so. I still run run into people in martial arts circles who trained with him and tell me my buddy was one of the best they ever saw. Anyway the reason I mentioned all that is b/c he (and I) both came out of that movie talking about how Statham was an incredibly realistic fighter. There are always going to be some spins, flowery takedowns and high kicks for movie purposes but the way he used his weapons (body, knife, guns) was very efficient.

I did feel Jet Li didn't show much that was new but I always enjoy watching him and I liked most of his dialog scenes.

I do agree that your expectations were probably too high. There were a few cheesy lines but not that many. And allowing for the fact that it was a movie there weren't many fight scenes moments that made me think "that wouldn't work".

    Interesting take, thanks.

I meant Stallone was self aggrandizing by starring in, writing and directing this movie.

Haven't seen Expendables yet, but from everything I've read and clips I have seen, it seems like an homage to the late 70's and 80's action movies, that had everything Panda is talking about. If that's the case, it would seem Panda's review would show the movie was actually spot on.

Death at a Funeral and The Informant!

I didn't like either one. Death at a Funeral I had higher expectations for but didn't think much of it was funny. James Marsden was good though.

The Informant! just dragged on and on and the ending was WTF-ish

I saw The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I really liked it. Picture a detective story set in Sweden. Interesting characters, good suspense and some nice twists. It was pretty graphic and it had subtitles so avoid it if you don't like films with either of those features.

Just saw "Daybreakers". Good movie but left me wanting more at the end. They definitely set themselves up for a sequel.

I also finished watching "Operation Endgame". I thought this movie would be funnier. Rob Cordry was funny in a sick way. The dialogue was smart, witty and sardonic but you kinda get the feeling that it's just a movie that a bunch of liberals made to mock the CIA and right wing establishment. Total waste of Zach Galafinakis' comedy skills.

"Borderland"- released in 2007. A movie based on a true story about three Americans who cross paths with a gang of satanic drug smugglers. A gore fest that features Sean Austin (Rudy, Lord of the Rings-Samwise Gamchee) as one of the bad guys. Decent horror flic that has it's roots in reality. Not gonna spoil it any more because it's worth watching. This movie is a case where the true story is probably way more messed up than the movie.

A quirky little comedy. Watchable but not really. It does have a drug boss with a funny Armenianesque accent. He delivers the best line in the movie.

"Roses are red. Violets are blue. Don't be a pus*y and let's get the fu*k out of here."

Weird *** movie. Sean Austin and his character made no sense.

I love how they wait until the very end to finally get some guns. You'd think that your friend being kidnapped or just being in Mexico would be enough.

    "Terror's Advocate"-2007
Impressive and intriguing documentary about lawyer Jaques Verges. Verges has been the defense lawyer for countless terrorists, has ties to former Nazis, Algerian liberation, PLO, Arafat, etc. etc. The documentary is a really well put together history lesson as told by the participants as well as a look at the perversion of the justice system. Definitely worth the watch but you better be ready for a movie full of subtitles.

They're looking for a gringo to sacrifice, yet Sean Austin is the only other American and he just happens to inexplicably work for them lol Why wouldn't they just sacrifice Rudy?

I watched [IMG]today. I thought it was pretty well done. The only trailer I'd seen showed it to be just a post-apocalyptic action movie, so I wasn't expecting too much. There was a lot more to it than that, and it had a pretty cool ending as well. And both Denzel Washington & Gary Oldman were awesome in it. I give it a

watched prince of persia last night and it was almost a great movie.they did a good job on special effects and bringing some of the cool weapons such as the cat of 9 tails into the film.my biggest issue was with the main character..he was not persian looking at all..dirty? yes, white *** american? yes.i realize there may not be a ton of good persian actors running around but atleast give this guy thats suppossed to be living in the dessert a tan.acting wise he did a fine job but looks can be everything to me.lacked a believability for me to really get into.

Watched "Peaceful Warrior"-2007. Very intriguing movie inspired by a true story. This movie is truly a sports movie and goes deeper than any of them in explaining the correlation between consciousness and performance. Transcends the typical sports movie genre. About a gifted gymnast who is trying to make the Olympic squad from Cal university. Finds a guru/trainer of sorts in Nick Nolte (very good performance) and undergoes non traditional training to say the least. Very compelling, very trippy, kind of the Donnie Darko of sports films. I think this movie flew under the radar but will live on as a cult classic. I highly recommend it.

Watched Oldboy. Man those Asian filmmakers can sure be sadistic and twisted but at the same time very shallow and unforgiving. They love things that are epic and grand in scope and this movie is a prime example. Definitely worth the watch as a horror mind fuc*. Some really great scenes and stimulating eastern concepts of moviemaking and culture albeit sadistic.

Then I watched "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead". All this did was give me a better understanding of the NY Times movie reviews. They made this movie a critics choice and although it's emotionally powerful with good performances from Ethan Hawke and Phillip Seymour-Hoffman this was as depressing as Hamlet. Seriously, The NY Times panned "Old Boy" stating:
Yet, "Before the devil knows you're dead" was hailed a critics choice (albeit different authors). Well, I found this comment to be most spot on in my opinion:
