...what I thought they were. Still a second rate team.

    Elite teams win these games.

Elite teams win home games. Elite teams win games coming off "their best practice in two years".

Elite teams dont give up 31 points at home.

We have made progress under the tri-fecta. But we are a second echelon team. We are not in the same conversation as the excellent teams in this league.

I wouldn't say we are 2nd rate. We are 2-1 and tied for first. I think we can compete with any team in the NFL. We proved it last week in Minnesota and tonight against the Jets. Unfortunately we made mistakes and didn't show up at the start of the game and got down 14-0. Then when we came back and took the lead, we couldn't shut the Jets down. We are not going 16-0 and probably not 12-4 either, but I think we have a decent shot at winning the AFC East, we just have to play smart football for 60 minutes.

Guess the New Orleans Saints don't qualify as one of FinFan316's "elite" teams.

Not that I believe the Dolphins are elite or anything.

I would say Pittsburgh is the only elite team in the AFC... That defense (aka Troy Pallawhateverhisnameis) is great. Once Big Ben comes back, they're going to be tough to beat.

Indy still has Peyton Manning and that's enough to give them a chance to be elite.

Other than that, there's a bunch of good teams in the AFC. We're in that mix IMO. Where exactly in that mix, top or bottom, I don't know.

pitt might be. i still want to see a bit more out of them. the ravens game will say alot IMO. but other than them i agree there's a bunch of good teams with strengths and weaknesses like us. we are in the mix and if we continue to improve throughout the season we could do some damage.

A few more players and we can be an elite team. I think we need some more explosiveness out of the backfield. R&R are solid, but not elite, and they don't really break any or go the distance. Picking up a Jahvid Best, Jamaal Charles or Dexter McCluster type player would help in that regard. A receiving tight end couldn't hurt either. Fasano is a second fiddle guy playing as a number 1. If we can find a Keller or Shiancoe, that would also elevate us.

Defensively, we are pretty solid overall, just need more gelling time, and any experience our younger kids can get. I think we missed Oddrick in this game on the edge.

I agree. I think we could use a better cover man or two in our defensive secondary. Our d-backs are all still pretty young but they are learning and getting better. I thought Jason Allen was improving but he has a really bad night. :pity:

I think we can use a great Tight End. Fasano is ok, but he is not a Dallas Clark/Jason Whitten/Antonio Gates. He is pretty average. We also need a fast speedy back/kick returner....someone like a Dexter McCluster...I think Noel Devine of WVU is the type of guy we need to target in next year's draft. We are close but not quite there, but it's still nice to be 2-1 and tied for first.

Did you expect us to be an "elite team" this year?

    I didn't.
I knew we were still going to have holes and glaring problems when playing upper echelon teams. Were hardly second rate though. This team has talent and if we continue to make good moves I in the draft and FA the next couple years we could be special.

It's a big dissapointment to lose your home opener against a division foe like we did but were just not as good as they are yet.

As good as Pitt is, the Tampa Bucs are bad.

How on earth do you give up 31 points at home to a team being led by Charlie Batch?

    THATS BAD.

This is right. If we get more explosive on offense and someone who can cover a TE, we have a chance. Right now, we are "just a good team". There is nothing special about this team. Nothing. Defense? Please. Look at that score. Second rate.

I can tell some are "hating" because I tell the truth. Its not personal. Its just the way it is.

I dunno. Yeah, I guess. I have high expectations. But regardless of what expectations were, and regardless of by whom, you or me, the result is the same. This is not an exceptional team by any means. We need to get better. We need more players. We need better players. After the "best Friday practice in two years", I expect to win home games.

I understand and fully accept that there will be those who dont have high expectations and accept this kind of performance. We just disagree.

This is a benchmark game. This is a young team and they will grow. The sting of the loss is amplified by who beat us. I believe by mid season we will win these games.

    Oh here we go... really?

Come on, we passed for over 350 yards against a top rate D, hung in all game as well. To even go on this rant is ridiculous. Yes we lost, yes it sucks because it was against the Jets. We weren't going undefeated anyways. It's really not that big of a deal right now.

First of all, if the dolphins "are who you thought they were" please let me know who the Bears/Packers are cause I need some money.

Secondly, losing sucks. Losing to the Jets sucks more. Losing the way we did sucks the most. But come on man, if we don't play horrible defensive football in that first quarter we win this game. If we don't put Yeremiah Bell on Dustin Keller we're right there in it. Chad Henne has no INTs on the season, even when we really let him loose last night. The Henne to Marshall connection is really starting to develop and we already know about that young defense.

Don't get too down on the team after one loss.

Yes. A thread that tells the truth makes it second rate. Only in Miami Dolphins forums. This is the only franchise I know whose fans cannot accept the truth about their team. Look at all of those who "thanked" you on this thread...those who cannot accept the truth. Its fine, but I tell the truth. I dont sugar coat it. Its how I roll.

So by your logic, the Saints, Colts, Vikings, and Jets are second rate.

All four have a loss under their belt, and three of four lost a close game that they could have pulled out in the end (the Colts where the only ones that didn't because they simply got blown out by a division rival).

Way to jump to conclusions. Glad that the coaching staff and players don't share your tendency to go off the deep end in Week 3.

Nothing wrong with the coordinator. How about the execution? We were within the 10 yard line 2 times I think and came away with 3 points. Can't win close games like that.

Yea, it's just too bad we didn't go undefeated. I mean, elite teams never lose games, ever. Oh, we're not talking about college football? We lost to the Jets. It sucks, but **** happens. You're not going to win them all I'm afraid. We have as good a shot to win the division as anyone. Sanchez will not continue to play as good as he has, and the Patriots defense is very questionable.

16 games in the regular season. A season that will change 16 times in 16 games and already the panic starts. Oh no we lost a game. Oh no the game didn't get called the way I think it should have. Oh no we lost to the mighty Jets. Oh no we'll never recover. Thank God the coaches and players know how to put this **** behind them or we would go 0-16.

Take a step back from the ledge bro. As of the date of this posting there has only been one Elite team that meets your standards and it "was" us. Just not this year.

With that said we are the leagues 2nd or 3rd youngest team. There are plenty of reasons for people to be very excited about this team. Count me among them.

you know how many years I have dealt with this, "its only one loss" junk? Seems like forever. I know its only one loss, but there is alot to be gleaned from it. "Second" Rate sums it up

As someone said, the OC is second rate and the rest we are waiting on. I dont disagree with that. But, that still makes the team second rate.

or we would go 7-9, or best case, we would go 11-5 and lose in the playoffs first round...and some loser would be here telling me that "its okay man, we're young....our QB is only in his second season, the Tuna left, We had two new WRs, two rookie starters, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah." In this game, we did what losing teams do....we found a way to lose this game. Thats the bottom line, thats the end of it. Spin it any way you want.

If losing in Prime time after your best practice in two years gives you reason to be optimistic, dont let me rain on your parade. Be optimistic about what might be, about what can be, about what should be.

I'll stand here with reality and deal with what is.

And that's why the season gets played. Because over the course of the season a team forms, good, bad or mediocre. 1 game this early in the season will not shape this team to ultimately be a winner, loser or mediocre. 2 weeks ago the Jets were a bust, today the Bears are undefeated. I don't see the Bears going 16-0 or the Jets walking away from everyone as predicted.

How the coaching staff adjusts with the personnel they have will decide were this team ends up.

exactl. you can add injuries, how young players will develop, cohesion amongst offensive line, defense, special teams. The team we have today is not indicative of the team we will have in three weeks. Sparanos team dont hit their stride till week 4 or 5 the past couple of years. and i just rewatched that game. we are better than we were last year. we just had some bad luck in this game. it happens. we'll beat the jets next time. i am sure of it

I'm a huge miami fan since 1972. Me and my daughters flew down from nyc to the game and my son who goes to Nova, where dolphins train came also. I tel it as it is. Henning does have to go. Before the plays were run I told my son what the dolphins should do in these situations. For example, 2nd and goal from 2yd line, I would have run ronnie 3x up the middle, forget the fade passes, low pct in my eyes. Forget a fg there, you have to get a td and make a statement. Last drive of game, they had plenty of time to run ronnie one of those plays. I would have spread them out 4 wide instead of having 2 wrs on left side and fasano in the middle. Killing our drives with wildcat that wasn't working and losing too many yards. The good was henne and marshall. The bad, whole defense and special teams. I've said this since early last year, they need to fire the special teams coach also, he is atrocius and that goes along with the players who play special teams. Special teams is main reason for our loss. They had great field position all nite along with a blocked punt. The stadium was awesome, fans went nuts including me and my son who was hoarse and mentally drained by end of first qtr ha ha. No lie. Defense looked terrible all nite, jets ran outside on us at will, no containment whatsover. Where was the def we played in minny? I think this game was important as is mondays game. We still have balt and gb and cinn on road. And I don't think we can beat the jets in ny. I think with this schedule we might win 8 games.
