I think the biggest problem is we need Crowder back, badly. People can hate on him all they want, but the fact pf the matter is, our defense plays much better, especially in run defense, when he's in the game. Granted Dobbins does blow.
I knew that name sounded familiar.....he was a coach for the juggernaut that is the University of Rhode Island football.....ummm guys he blows....
i agree. getting crowder, jerry, odrick and mcdaniels back will be huge. i think some fans are missing out how important they are to us. myself included. the dropoff from these guys to the next is larger than i expected
i was about to ask who twisted his ears over.think of them as tiny bull horns pointed at the opposition.i don't care if he has 3 noses as long as he can make his unti play better than it has.
Rizzi was Sparanos Special Teams coach in College. Hopefully Sparano does not get to loyal. He was an Assistant under Bonemgo. then what look for a new coach after this season?
When he missed games in 2008 and last year, the run defense got significantly worse. I'm not the biggest fan of Crowder, but it's obvious to me, Crowder is a bigger part of the defense than people give him credit for.
dont know but i didnt like him in san diego. i was saying as much when we traded for him so for me i'm getting the play out of dobbins i expected, though maybe a little worse even than i expected
I have been asking for this day for weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rizzi came from Rutgers, people I know say he is a hard worker and a good guy.
Yeah, I gotta agree with this but I think Sparano better put himself on the hot seat!!! His teams come out flat almost every game, and end up playing behind the 8 ball against all good teams. That's not the way it works. He should also insist that the Wildcat stops for the time being. Let the base offense gel....
How did we come out flat last night? If you only watched the 1st 10 mins you'd think we'd go on to kill NE.
i think the wildcat is dying of its own volition. we are using it less and less. i wouldnt be surprised if we see a game soon where we dont use it once
He has to bear responsibility for the teams performance...or lack of success. He cant keep blaming other people, coaches, things. If Bonegamo sucked, he should have been fired already. I called for that in preseason.
Wasn't the plan for Dobbins to be mainly an ST guy? I'm guessing that's changed with him having to play for Crowder. Another reason our ST has smelled like booty?
Had to happen. the whole unit is on notice now to get it together. Luckily the bye week is here so we have more time to get it figured out. You just can't gone out after that pitiful performance last night.
Does Sparano do the firing or does Ireland? maybe Sparano was asking for this to happen, Sparano is the one that brought Rizzi in two years ago to be the special teams assistant coach, so maybe he didn't want JB? We don't know.
is he responsible for those interceptions? young qbs do that. that's why we didn't pass in the first two games. we had to the last two games and you see what happens. still the offense is moving and you don't fire the guy because he calls a wildcat here or there. he's going to retire anyway within the next three years and he's a great mentor to have for david lee until then. the guy is a walking encyclopedia
Can someone give me the Readers Digest on why Westhoff left Miami? He survived a few head coaching changes in NY. Just curious.
Essentially, they had to promote the assistant. As you said, their aren't ST Coaches out on the street in Week 4. In all honesty, I doubt it gets any better this season. Worse even. But it HAD to be done. Someone has to be held accountable.
There are three major gaffes in the history of sports: The Red Sox trading Babe Ruth to the Yankees, the Trail Blazers passing on Michael Jordan and the Dolphins letting Westhoff leave to go to the Jets.
I've been asking for it for YEARS. So long, in fact, that by now I am not happy, just pissed off like "What the **** took so long???" This was a no brainer when they canned Maser in the FIRST coaching sweep.
Thanks. That blows my mind. I wouldn't care if the guy was the biggest douche in the world - it's obvious he knows how to coach ST's. Good move canning your guy today. Had to be done. Hopefully your players respond.
I wonder if after the Wildcat call (the bizarre, badly-timed one) killed our great 1st quarter drive... did Sparano tell Henning to stop calling Wildcat plays in the middle of good drives?? I mean, I could see Sparano telling Henning, "Hey, you just killed that effing drive. Do NOT call another Wildcat play without checking with me!" I just don;t believe Henning would be able to resist calling Wildcat on 3rd and 18 or on a hot passing drive without someone else forcing him. Left to his own devices, Henning disregards what is happening in the flow of the game, and just calls based on numbers and formations theory. "What makes sense on paper". That's why you get calls that stick out like poop on an ice floe.
Pretty much. Wanny and Westhoff disagreed. Due to the fact that Wanny is a man of low intellect and possessed of character as robust as a glass of water he brought in Keith Armstrong and let Westhoff go to the Jets. I'm sure that Ryan and Westhoff have their moments, but there's no doubt in my mind who runs that show in the end.
Glad they fired SOMEBODY, at least. Now they need to get some good ST players in the offseason. Too late for this year. I don't think we're sniffing the playoffs this year.
i highly doubt henning is so in love with the wildcat that he's not seeing the same things as we are. the difference is he's willing to ride it a bit longer to see if our players can execute it. they simply havent been able to do it. To me this is similar to our problems running the screen. you know how many people posted we should stop trying to throw screens because we were having problems with them. henning kept calling them because he knows its about execution and timing. that perseverance paid off in a big way yesterday as the screen called for a TD would attest too. Its obvious the wildcat is having problems but alot of that is due to the offensive line. he's giving them chances to work it out but with the poor results he's cutting it back. as he should. i dont have a problem if he wants to experiment here or there with it just to see if they can resurrect it but its pretty obvious he's giving up his confidence in it and because of that i think you'll see almost zero uses of it from here on out in crucial situations like 3rd and 6 last night. i think we're done with that until or unless the offensive line proves it can block it correctly. maybe it will happen when john jerry gets back but right now the interior isnt making the blocks it needs to and ronnie isnt running like he did last year so i dont see a place for it with us this year also think sparano was completely on board with the wildcat. i dont think henning is running that in opposition to sparano
They have been bringing in good special teams players for two years, maybe now they will be coached right and show what they can do.
Not to be overly simplistic, but there aren't that many schematic differences in special teams to my knowledge. How many different ways can you tell guys to simply not let the guy in front of them get past them on kicks/punts? Not asking them to create a hole or passing lanes mind you...just don't let them make you into road kill. And the only philosophy I know of on kickoff and punt coverage is "stay in your lane and don't get sucked in". IMHO, the problem is one of two things: 1) JB just wasnt' a good enough teacher/motivator to induce good performace 2) Our constant churning of the bottom end guys (i.e. ST) has taken its toll (looking at you Ireland). I hope and suspect it's the former.
agree. think it comes down to discipline and coaching players to carry out their assignments in special teams. we'll see how it plays out
