i would say that one year extra playing time definitely helps. Ryan had a rough year last year statistically but it was because people switched up their defenses and gameplanned for him differenttly much like Henne is facing this year. Ryan learned alot last year and its paying off for him through the first four games. I think Henne might be progressing faster if you go by games started but he had the advantage of an extra year of sideline study so thats probably why he's prrogressing faster. The key will be how long they keep progressing. what's their ceiling?

I feel this is a much more appropriate comparison, especially as all 3 QBs were guys that came up in regards to the Dolphins during that draft.

Then look at Hennes YPA. And, how many 15 yard darts did Henne throw in the last game?

Seriously...Marino threw Bombs all over the place...did u even watch any of his games the second season?

    Are you serious?

You are comparing Henne's few stats against QB's that have played for years and maintained great numbers throughout their entire careers?? This kid can't even run a bootleg!

    Have you lost your mind??

Marion was a HoF QB. No one is expecting that from Henne (if he is that is gravy) but he's certainly no bust, at least not yet. We gotta give the guy a chance 1st. 17 games is not nearly enough. After game 36 or so then you can start making real assessments.

Henne has tremendous skills and everyone has a bad game. Lets not hyperventilate over it. The INT's sucked but it didn't cost us the game (thank god). As long as we improve and start to pile up some wins I don't care if Daffy Duck is our QB. I was a Miami Dolphin fan long before Chad Henne and I'll be one long after. A year from now no one will remember why we had this high blood pressure.

    Go Dolphins...!

They're both appropriate. The stats of Henne, Ryan, and Flacco allow us to compare him to his fellow draftees, but that in itself is meaningless w/o a baseline to compare to b/c none of these 3 are actually proven QBs yet.

It's like comparing Kevin Kolb to Brady Quinn, Jamarcus Russell, John Beck, and Drew Stanton. Kolb could look better than the 1st and 2nd rounders of his draft, but that's insignificant overall.

In reality, Henne shouldn't be compared to any players of his draft class or AFCE division. We should just want the best player that Chad Henne can be, and that's it, b/c that's what we got. If he's giving us 100%, then we have to accept him for what he becomes and not be upset b/c he "may not" end up as good as Ryan etc.

NOTE: The examples I listed are only to show people that all QB's need some time to develop.

Really?! Are YOU seriously going there?

Because if you are, then I'd love for you to enlighten me on how many YEARS of excellent football each of these QBs played through their first 17 games as a starter? Tick-Tock.

PS: How's his passing on a roll out?

Being from Pa I have watched lots of Squeeler games and listened to the fans same frustratations with Rapistburger. And trust me if he doesnt come out of the gate slinging it all over the place they will sounnd just like some on this board. He frustrated them on a regular basis the thing he was very good at was finishing a a game in the final 2 minutes and his defense always kept him in just about every game.

This is the gameplan I thought our team was going to folloe after the first two games. Yet I came on here after WINS and saw people coplainimg about " is this why we brought in Marshal to win low scoring close games". When Henne started Slinging it BAD things started happening. I would much rather have the low scoring victory controled by our defense. Its how we are built let Henne manage the game for now and Marshal will still be here when he is ready. Marino is gone and he is only coming back for visits:(

I think you need to understand that this is a comparison of those quarterbacks over the first 17 starts, not their career. Before you start asking if others have lost their mind, especially one who has done research and presented a facts to support said argument it may be best to actually understand what is being shown.

Otherwise your response is way over the top in response to a post that did nothing but really state data.

I agree. Both Ryan and Flacco have at least 17 more NFL starts.

It just seems to me that if you have a young QB that is in the top half of the league in just about all categories with only 17 starts, you're doing ok at that position.

Are you serious? Rivers first year as a starter:

    61.7% accuracy, 3400 yards, 92 QBR, 22TDs 9 INTs.

I think it disingenuous to go and grab all the QB's stats through the first four games of their 2nd year, when some of them had GREAT first years. Rivers and Aaron Rodgers both came in and lit the league up their first year starting. You compare what Ryan and Flacco did this year, ignoring Ryan had two pretty dog gone good years already, and is having a good year now. He's 100 miles ahead of Henne. Flacco has regressed big time, but had a great year last year, and he's trending upwards, not downwards. He had a horrific second game, his last two were solid. McNabb only started 6 games his first year, his second he had a solid year. His real 2nd year of starting, 2001, he tore it up. Manning, duh he's a superstar, no need to compare him. Brady won a superbowl by his second year, and started off great as well. Tony Romo started off HOT. He sat for 3 years though.

But these are the QBs we should be comparing him to. Not Eli Manning. Although I'd be happy if Henne gets his career TDs over his INTs.

Henne deserves to start all year. There is no doubt about it. We need to see if he gets it by the end of this year. If not, we better start looking.

The thing that is killing Henne is that he hasn't contributed to any wins yet. Not his fault. But the Bills and esp. the vikings game, he's looking more Trent Dilfer than anything. And when he finally gets it going, we get our butts beat. Not his fault entirely for sure. But would we have won this game even without the implosion? He had one good drive then threw two INTs in the first half. that's not a good performance by any means.

I can name one QB......Dan Marino, unfortunately, a long list does not exist, but you knew that.

This Pessimist is open to your challenge. What is the point with this illustration?? I have always known you to be a very smart guy, so for the sake of respect, I acknowledge at the start this is in no way an attack on you personally,

I have to say if the idea is to compare Henne to Marino, Farve, Aikman, Montana, Thiesman, Brady, Simms, Kelly, Manning, Plunkett, Bradshaw, Elway, Rivers, Brees and Simms you are reaching on this one friend. Henne doesn't deserve to even be mentioned in the same sentence as these great QB's.

With that being said, Comparing Henne to Cutler, Vince Young, Leaf, Russell, Couch, Carr, Flacco, Mcmahon, and Dilfer I am okay with even though I don't believe it to be totally fair. You have to admit when you break apart your attempt to illustrate Henne "BELONGS" the illustration falls short.

Comparing Henne to the later group is not fair because it assumes failure. Comparing him to the first group assumes success. Henne hasn't been around long enough to deserve comparison. Lets just hope in a year or two when stats start to accumulate we are leaning toward the first group!! For now......the lean is toward a group that we all hope Henne fails to achieve induction too.

If Henne flutters this year and we end up some crazy 5-11 or something we have to be looking next year to upgrade him. It's not personal.......its business. It does not mean he can not compete for the starting job it just means that we may have more work to do at that position.

The pics didn't help the game. Took at least 9 points off the board and maybe as much as 21 points. Add 21 to 14 and take away his pic 6 (really seven points)

    We win 35 - 34

I didn't grab & average the stats of their first 4 games. Do you know how long that would take me?! No way I spend that much time doing so just to listen to you complain about it.

I used their ENTIRE Sophomore seasons b/c Henne is in his Sophomore season...... and QBs are known to go through Sophomore slumps. I'm comparing apples to apples here. It's not genuine to compare 1st years b/c most of those other QBs had a lot more time spent with their 1st team offense and opposing coaches didn't have a true ability to game plan against them as they do going into their 2nd season.

Hence, the stats I used for Rivers were of his ENTIRE 2nd season. I didn't pick and choose for my own purpose. I used everyone's Sophomore season (outside of the SB references and the Payton Manning reference).

    PS:
-Rivers didn't do ANYTHING his first 2 seasons in the NFL. He sat the bench but did have 1 pretty bad game.
-Rodgers and Romo sat for their 1st 3 seasons, so if you REALLY want to compare Henne to them at this point in their career, you would have absolutely ZERO game experience to compare to b/c they DIDN'T play till year 4.
-I used Matt Ryan's 2nd season b/c it's more comparable to Henne of this season. Ryan also had a premier TE and WR to work with where as Chad did not. This season, Matt and Chad are on par with eachother. Falcons fans were calling for Ryan's head after their first game.
-Average McNabb's first 17 games starting and tell me how that compares to Henne. Not sure McNabb will come out ahead.
-Brady won his 1st SB b/c NE had a complete team around him full of quality, experienced veterans. Brady was NOT the reason NE made it to the SB; he was merely a contributing part of the team.

I just haven't had time to dig into this, but I will. What I do know off the top of my head is that you are comparing apples and oranges. It's great to start well - it is better to end well and that info isn't in yet.

There has to be something more behind your infatuation of Chad Henne. I don't think I have ever seen a more clear case of a "man-crush" before in my life. You are totally in love with this guy. It's OK, you can admit it. We all know you have autographed Henne posters in your room and kiss them twice a day, and we all know that you just can't wait to see him in his tight pants on Sunday. Spend a little time on the Psychiatrists couch and you'll be OK. I am sure this sort of "stud-drooling" happens all the time. SeEk HeLp!

    Touche'. :wink2:

Actually, I'm more of a realist and see Chad for what he is: a potentially good to great QB..... a top 10 QB..... a QB good enough for this team to be a dynasty with. Nothing more, nothing less. I merely grow tired of all the cliff-jumpers who are clueless as to the developmental process & growing pains that virtually all great QBs endure in order to transcend from being a "player with potential" to becoming an "established player".

How am I comparing apples to oranges? I'm comparing Henne's 2nd year starting to everyone else's 2nd year. It's still his 2nd starting season. You're right, the season isn't in. 12 games are still left...... and since Henne has continually progressed through his first 17 games, it's more conceivable that he finishes stronger than he's currently playing. So if anything, using Henne's first 4 games could be an injustice to Chad.

By the way, I like your facade of an answer. Sidetracking the question like your rant did is typically either an admission sign of guilt, a lacking of rebuttal, or flat out knowing you're wrong. :wink2:

    excellent post TP..

Check it Prez, ive said it all offseason, and I heard it reaffirmed by a head coach somewhere, that if your QB had success in his first year, then in his 2nd year he plays up to the level he played the last year, then that is an upward progression in the player...to be able to play at the level the year before, after Dcordinators have a bunch of tape on your ***, means you are an ascending player, according to the professional's, and me....

I have my issues with Henne, and my personal record when evaluating QB's would show you that I fall in love with the rifle arm to quickly sometimes, but I really want to give this kid with the golden arm more time...he played so well in stretches on monday, those int's weren't sh$3 to me...I know he see's what he did wrong, and i'll be damed if that dude hasn't showed that he can learn from mistakes and visibly improve on them.

    Hey Socks! :knucks:
Thanks for not jumping to conclusions about what my intentions were, my friend. My main intention was just to show that even the great QBs over history (outside of your Marino reference) needed time to develop and attain their greatness..... and I said this so that hopefully people will realize that it's unreasonable to think Henne should be a star after 17 starts. I'm not comparing him to these guys in their prime; I'm comparing him to these guys in their early years before they became the stars we know them as to show that hope is far from lost. The Plunkett, Bradshaw, and Simms references were to illustrate that we don't need an all-world QB to win a championship, b/c in the years I listed, these QB's weren't performing at an elite level. Henne can be good to great and we can still win SuperBowls.

McMahon and Dilfer were more examples to show that we don't have to have an elite Marino like QB to win a championship. I listed Cutler, Ryan, Flacco, and Young to show that Henne's at least as good or better than the guys who are/were highly touted as the future at the position over the past 5-6 years. Meaning there's no reason to jump off a bridge or cast out Henne when the only QB over the past 6 drafts who is undeniably better than Henne is Aaron Rodgers.

I'm not comparing Henne to the later group. I'm showing that the idea of scratching Henne and looking else where doesn't mean that he can be upgraded by using a #1 pick. I showed how #1 picks bust as often as they hit.... hence we should appreciate what we currently have b/c it could be a lot worse if we ditched Chad. Henne's probably in the top 5 QBs drafted over the past 5 years. He deserves time to develop.

That's a very big if...... and Chad has too much talent to see us passing on him for an unknown player who will be years behind Henne on the developmental curve.
