Are you thinking of their bench coach, Tony Pena?

Where is this from? Everything I've read has said Edwin is on that list.

My mistake. Yes, Pena, the bench coach.

IMO, management might as well forget about him. The Yankees look like they’re going to the World Series this year. Same with Valentine. He’s not going to sign on after the botched hiring process.

As is the annual routine, the Marlins have cleared some roster spots in anticipation of doing business at the winter meetings.

I believe the Cubs will push hard for Girardi, if he goes, I think you'll see Pena as the Yankees next manager....it was between him and Girardi last time...Pena is awesome

The Mets also want Girardi from what I can tell. If that happens, Bozo the Art Clown’s last two firings will be managing teams in the same division.

    Way to go, chief. :pity:

The Marlins hope their search for a new manager will last about two weeks. Fresh off an 80-82 season, the front office is in the process of narrowing its list of candidates and setting up interviews. ... In contention for the job are Bobby Valentine, Jim Fregosi, Bo Porter and Tony Pena. Other names that have been reported are Ted Simmons and Tim Wallach. Edwin Rodriguez, who replaced Fredi Gonzalez on June 23, remains a candidate. But it appears he isn't a frontrunner.

None of those names really leap off the page at me. Tony Pena wouldn’t be too bad.

It’s a shame the White Sox extended Ozzie Guillen. Now THAT is a perfect manager for the Marlins.

There's a 0% chance Girardi manages the Mets. It's either the Yankees or Cubs for him. You don't need to worry about that one.

Guess who’s on the radar again.

I want Ozzie Guillen to manage this team badly. He is perfect for the job. He’d have no hesitation about telling Bozo the Art Clown or Igor to screw off.

I heard the leading candidates for the Marlin's manager position are:
Romero Britto, Thomas Kinkade, and Jasper Johns.

Valentine has withdrawn his name AGAIN.

Loria is the biggest screw-up in sports. All of them. Put Jeffrey Loria, Dave Wannstedt, Bill Buckner, Bobby Petrino, Matt Millen, and Isiah Thomas into a room together, and Loria’s overwhelming aura of failure causes the rest to pass out.

It's certainly on Loria that he's 0 for 2 in hiring the guy he wanted since this time last year. Oh, and he gave a division rival an experienced manager in the process.

Loria was the only reason he was even a candidate. The FO completely blocked his hiring.

And I don't care much that we gave Fredi to the Braves. His biggest accomplished in his 3 years here was not letting Hanley boss him around. That's like being upset because we let Olindo Mare go to the Bills.

You’re misinterpreting me. I’m not trying to say that losing Fredi was a horrible event. I’m saying that the owner of this team fired a manager only to fail twice at hiring the desired replacement while giving a freebie to a division rival. It’s three-pronged fail.

And Loria is sticking with the tactic. Arizona bench coach Bo Porter, who was interviewed after Fredi was fired, is supposedly the leading candidate for the managerial job.

He had trouble coaching 3rd freaking base. I don't want him with the power of managing the team.

He has no managerial experience and, therefore, should not be ahead of Edwin.

There have to be a ton of better options out there.

Deciding to send or hold runners from 3rd base isn't at all related to managing.

Every manager has to start somewhere. Who cares if he doesn't have managing experience. Most people would agree that Tony Sparano is a better coach than Dave Wannstedt but by your logic, a team should hire Wannstedt over Tony because he has head coaching experience.

There aren't exactly a ton of managing options out there. There's nothing to suggest that Bo Porter is worse (or better) than any other candidate and to pretend otherwise is dumb. However, if he is hired, some positives that he brings:

He is supposed to be a good outfield coach and we have 3 outfielders whose development is crucial to our immediate and future success.
Has a good working relationship with Hanley Ramirez.

Was one of Cody Ross' earliest supporters.

The only known negative is aggressive in sending runners to a fault. Seeing as he won't be responsible for that, it's irrelevant.

Hmmm I wonder if they'll get a 6 pack of beer or a year's subscription to the Wall Street Journal for him. Seriously, I can't see how he's going to have any trade value right now. His stock has really fallen. He seems like he needs a fresh start in the worse way.

Miller should be worth at least a decent bullpen arm.

Why would any team give up a decent bullpen arm for a LHP who can't throw strikes or get anyone out at the MLB level? Especially since even decent bullpen arms are like gold nowadays. If anything the Marlins should try to turn him into a LOOGY and see if he can stick there. Most likely he will be non-tendered, released and signed by another team though.
