So my laptop has crapped out and I need a new one. Anybody use or know someone who uses a relatively cheap laptop top (under 400 dollars)?
You didnt say what you would use it for. My nephew has a Leonovo and although I looked down at it first it has proved to be durable. It has been dropped ,had coke spilled on it,and it has generally been abused and yet it never has failed or given problems.I end up using it when the others including my high end Sony Vaios,HPs give me problems. And the wi fi is more sensitive than my other notebooks. Its one of the cheaper ones in the market. Another notebook that is durable is Dell but its not cheap. I am currently looking for a notebook with long battery life and graphics capability.Next year the new Intel chipsets will come with extended graphics capability so I will probably wait until then.
Stay the HELL away from HP. Just bought a new one. VERY VERY high end....damn fan is already rattling, and its only 6 weeks old. Everytime I have to deal with them, its chat with some dude named Ahmed in Pakistan, and he very rarely has answers, just link's to patches from some dude name Achmir in Pakistan...... Very very unhappy with HP!!!!
Acer is also a very solid computer for a low price. I believe you can find them at Best Buy for about $350.
You've had good luck with Chevy, Chrysler and Ford? I've had VERY good luck with Ford, very very bad luck with both Chevy and Chrysler....just got done replacing the tranny in my 06 Town and Country at only 44k miles. The bad fan and tech support is only the tip of the ice-berg with HP. I also bought it with Office 2010 preloaded. I was told it was good for 3 licenses, but am finding out its only 1 after the fact....when bringing it to their attention, I get ZERO response, AND Microscum won't touch it cause it was loaded by HP. They also put a bunch of useless media software on it that badly interferes with other software. Anytime I want to turn the volume down with the keyboard it minimizes everything.
Try http://www.gearxs.com/store/ They had some nice laptops right around over and under, your 400 dollar price range. For me, I've had great results from Gateways products.
I bought Mama a gateway laptop from tiger direct and it is REALLY nice for the price. Was more like 650, but nothing it can't do and is a 17" widescreen.
I picked up a M635 (?) off of Ebay for 240 dollars, 17 inch screen 40 gb HD and 1 GB memory, runs flawlessly. Once I had a 17 inch screen I rarely use my 15 inch screened laptops. GearXS has a Asus tablet laptop 1gb memory, 17 GB HD for 270 bucks that would be extremely versatile and affordable laptop.
Sorry I wasnt more specific guys. What Im looking for is ultimately a computer that is durable and reliable and has a decent battery life. My computer that is dying is a 2 !/2 year old hp pavilion that set me back about 1,000. I had that one for entertainment, and gaming. I think Ill stay away from HP because imo they make a crappy product and dont stand behind their warranties or recalls. Ive also decided no more expensive computers its not worth it, because I only need something I can take to class and do homework on.
Also Im currently looking at getting an inspiron from dell. They have one listed for under 400. Anybody use those?
Seems like Dell is all over the charts. I would STRONGLY suggest going to tiger direct and start reading buyer reviews on any particular models you like.
i can't really say for the best-buy where rocky is at but they should have their name changed to worst-buy.great store if you need can 0 air,cd's or a little zip drive but i would caution on my experiences with them about purchasing a computer from those..ok time to take my blood pressure meds.
Sorry man, was offline for a few. I mean that I have heard and read great things, then somewhere along the line, seems like quality really took a hit. I think its a real tight-rope for a company to make a great computer, but keep it reasonably priced. Systemax is the Tiger Direct brand. My last box before this HP was a Systemax. For what I paid, and got out of it, you won't find that much quality for product anywhere on the planet....kind've wishing I had gone that way again...and not sure if they make any laptops.
Ford-Chevy-Chrysler When I was actively selling electronics that was my mantra. You should stick with what you know. The comfort level is higher and problems seem to be more tolerable too.
Any of you techie guys care going into the differences between the Intel Celeron and Pentium processors? I did a quick search and i see the Celeron is slower and a lower priced processor.
It matches your requirements.Sturdy and reliable, good support .If you can get one for 400 go for it. Another underated brand is ASUS but I am not sure about its support
I had an Inspiron and it took abuse all the way until it flew off my motorcycle at 80mph and got run over. Until then it was great. i have a Latitude now and am just as happy. I've been using Dell laptops for over 10 years and have been very happy.
So I figured I'd give you guys an update. Well I talked to my parents (usually a good idea) and they offered to pay for it. Their only stipulation was I went with an HP or Dell because they had a financing account with them. Considering I was looking at Dell already and am not too happy with HP I purchased a Dell Inspiron. I got the Inspiron 1545 with a Pentium Dual Core Processor, 4gb ram, 320 gb hard drive.
Can't really speak for Laptops, but my eMachine desktop hasn't had a single problem in the 5 years I've owned it.
I'm a huge fan of Toshiba. I've had a Toshiba Satellite laptop since I graduated high school (2007) and it's been working great since then. There are some pretty good ones you can get for $350-450 online at Best Buy.
