One more thing. Since I've been a Jets fan, they have had the following head coaches:

    Joe Walton
    Bruce Coslet
    Pete Carroll
    Rich Kotite
    Bill Parcells
    Al Groh
    Herm Edwards
    Eric Mangini
    Rex Ryan

Other than Bill Parcells, there isn't a coach on that list that I'd rather have than Ryan. Granted they set the bar pretty low

All I want is a championship. I don't give a **** who coaches the team, whether they coddle the players, abuse them, never say a word, or talk sh!t. It's all about results. Ryan went to the AFC championship game, whether teams laid down or not. He has them at 5-1 this year. Who the **** wouldn't be happy with that other than fans of other teams? Seriously. Shula could coach the Jets and you guys would hate him. Enough of the high and mighty bs that is being thrown around here

No one remembers the Super Bowl losers, but if you want to make that your team's aspiration, have at it.

You just don't get it, do ya bro. :pity:

Okay now - all due respect bro - you're so full of **** your eyes are brown. A few posts ago you were crowing how Ryan took the Jets to the AFC Championship last year. Now all of a sudden it's no good that Shula did it?

    C'mon man.

You know why you guys hate Ryan? Because the Jets are better with him as their coach. I am sure you would love for them to have Herm Edwards, or Wade Phillips.

No. No one does. I'd have to think long and hard to name the past 3.

I wasn't aware that Ryan is reminding everyone on a weekly basis. I guess you learn something new every day.

In all honesty bro...let him say everything he wants. The NFL has a great memory, and no team stays good forever.

When the Jets start to slide - which may be as soon as next year with the cap mess they'll be in - teams are gunna enjoy holding them down and *** raping them while reminding them of things Ryan has said.

    What comes around goes around.

And for the record...I'm not saying this about him just because he's a Jet. I hated his father, never was a Jet coach, couldn't stand Porter when he was a Dolphin, and I wish Channing Crowder would STFU too, and he's a Dolphin.

Did anyone expect RR to get less talkative after winning some games? Not sure why this is getting so much attention. He's been talking big since before he even coached a game, he's not going to change. I personally prefer less talk myself and find him a great annoyance mostly because he refuses to give anyone else any credit whatsoever, but to each his own. Whether he's just talking smack or he really believes it, doesn't really matter. His team is eating it up and playing hard for him.

As for me, I make liberal use of the channel selector button when his image or voice show up on the tv or radio. He chooses to talk a lot, I choose not to listen. The ONLY reason I watch anything Ryan/Jets related on purpose is that they play the Fins twice a year. :shifty:

No - it's stating a fact. He took over a losing team, with a rookie QB, and in his first year had them 30 miniutes from the Super Bowl. That's a big difference from coaching 21 straight years and never winning a SB in that span.

So for year 1 progress, I am happy as a fan. And 6 games into the 2nd season, I am pretty pleased as well.

    Bro, you're spinning. Stop.

After someone else said that Shula WON Championship games since then - which was ALSO stating a fact - you replied with:

Now it's a big difference from coaching 21 years without winning a SB?

Bottom line is this. Neither coach won after going to the championship game. Difference is Shula (and EVERY other coach who has won anything) was quiet about it.

BS! The difference is that Ryan has had ONE crack at it. Shula had 25. And for 21 straight years, his "quiet method" didn't produce a SB win. No spin there.

So in other words, if you back your way into the playoffs and manage to play two good games before you get your *** handed to you in the AFC Championship in your first year it's something to be proud of, but two superbowl wins, 5 superbowl appearances, and the winningest coach in football isn't?

If you remember, the "Mangenius" coached your team to a better record his first year than Ryan did. Should he have run his mouth?

No spin? I'm gunna start calling you "Pinwheel Bick" if you keep this up. :tongue2:

    Let's reboot this conversation.

    You said
I contended that Shula went 21 years without winning a Super Bowl with the humble approach. You pointed out that Shula won about 300 more games than Ryan, along with 2 Super Bowls.

So here is what I got.

    1. I believe that the ultimate goal of success in the NFL is to win a Super Bowl. Maybe we have to agree to disagree on this one.

    2. Assuming that the goal is to win a Super Bowl, then after succeeding in the '72 and '73 seasons, Shula went 21 straight years of failing to meet that goal.

    3. For 12 of those 21 seasons, he had one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time in Dan Marino.

So if the basic argument is that a humble approach like Don Shula's is the better approach, then I tend to disagree. That humble approach failed to produce a Super Bowl champion in 21 straight seasons, 12 of which he had Dan Marino. Let that speak for itself. His approach was good for division titles and conference titles, but since Jan of 1974 it was not good enough for a Super Bowl title.

Now you have the complete opposite in Rex Ryan. His style is brash and full of outward confidence. Is his style more successful? You can not say at this point. He has coached one season, plus 6 games. It may be or it may not be. He's had one shot and got an AFC championship game loss to show for it. Again, by my definition of success, he failed in his first attempt. Now when I pointed out that he got to that game, etc., I was using it as a measure of progress. If you want to argue that taking a losing team to the AFC championship game in his first year does not display progress, then again - we will have to agree to disagree. I think it does. Success? No. Progress, yes. But if he never wins a SB, them he will have failed his mission with the Jets and his style and tactics would also be a failure. However, I think you need more of a body of work to decide.

I am not trying to spin anything. I am trying to convey my point. Shula had initial success and then 21 years of failing to win a Super Bowl. Ryan has had no success in achieving the goal in one year.

Now, lastly, a few other things:

    1. The general accepted definition of backing into the playoffs is having your team lose, while the other teams you are competing for a playoff spot also lose. Not the case last year. The Jets won their last two games. I do not care to argue about who laid down and who didn't. They needed to win the games and they did. No "backing in".

    2. Leading a team at the half 17-13, only to lose by 13 is not "getting your *** handed to you". Losing 13-3 at the half and losing the game 27-9 would be defined as getting your *** kicked. Again, we can agree to disagree on that one.

    3. I said previously and I will say it again. Don Shula was a great coach. But the fact remains that for the last 21 years of his coaching career he failed to win a SB....and he had Marino.

Post away, but I have said all that I have to say. I am trying to be fair. Ryan is a loudmouth, but if it ultimately gets them a SB, I personally don't care. And I think he should get more than one year before his style is deemed a failure. Thank you! Goodnight!

I'd have to pretty much agree with all of this. Only time will tell if Ryan's approach is successful, but he's proving that he's off to a good start. Again, he's not being arrogant; he's being confident.

Confidence: belief in yourself and your abilites..... Trust or faith in a person or thing.

I don't like the guy b/c he makes one of my rival teams tougher to beat, but I do respect what he's accomplishing so far with such a young QB at the helm. My ONLY gripe is that he fails to give opponents the credit they deserve when they deserve it. If you openly give your own team credit, then you should also give your opponents some credit as well. He reminds me of Nick Saban in that regard. Nicky gets clobbered, and the schmuck doesn't give an ounce of credit to SC afterwards.

I know he said some stuff about Miami last year (i.e. the Wildcat). Other than that, has he been a blowhard in other defeats? I am asking an honest question, because I don't remember.

Last year was his first year, so he was bound to make mistakes (and he will make more). Losing like a slapd!ck is definitely one of them. I hope he's learned and knocks it off. I'd rather have him say, "You got us this time, but wait until next time." That acknowledges that he was beat, but not in a ***** sort of way. Make sense?

Yes. It is a fact that the Jets will not win the Super Bowl this year. This year is 2010. The Super Bowl has already taken place, and not only did the Jets not win, but they didn't even participate.

Perhaps you don't know the difference between a year and a season (as I referenced both in the post you quoted).

I could be wrong, but I'm not sure if he gave any credit to the Ravens after the loss. Hopefully he'll learn to do so as he becomes more seasoned as a head coach.

Backing into the playoffs is the most over used and stupid phrase.

I bet Cincy and SD thinks we backed in.

Say the Phins go 10-2 and then lose 4 in a row...make the Playoffs..did they back in?

    Reboot? You're adding to what's already said. That's not a reboot, that's a continuation. :wink2:

Yes, that is the ultimate goal. However, one can't be called a failure for not reaching that every year. No one wins every year. It's unrealistic to think so, and therefore ridiculous to say not winning it all is failure.

Yet, he DID win two. You keep harping on the years he didn't. See below for more.

And NO defense OR running game, yet he still managed to make the Dolphins perennial playoff contenders. This while having winning records insuring low draft picks. Have you ever thought of that?

He took the Phins to the superbowl with Don Strock and David Woodley as the QBs in tandem. Name one other coach who can do that?

The humble approach didn't win superbowls for 21 straight years for SHULA. It did - AGAIN - win him two...and it won super bowls for (let's say this AGAIN and see if it sinks in) Dungy, Gruden, Payton, Tomlin, Coughlin, Belichick, Vermeil, Shanahan, Holmgren, Switzer, Seifert, Gibbs, Walsh, Flores, Landry, etc. etc. etc.

Aside from Jimmy Johnson, name me one loudmouth who's won a superbowl. I'll wait. :wink2:

Semantics...okay, you were aided in getting to the playoffs. Better?

Okay, you say losing 27-9 after losing 13-3 at halftime means you got your *** kicked. That would mean you were outscored 14-6 in the second half.

You were winning 17-13 at halftime and lost 30-17, which means you were outscored 17-0 in the second half.

Okay, you got your *** handed to you in the second half. Again, better?

    See above.

Ed, Ed, Ed....do you even comprehend the gist of this thread? No one said he was a failure. Where do you even get that?

ALL I said, and I will repeat it and stand by it, is that he needs to STFU until he DOES win something. That's all.

    Haters gonna hate.
Since you wanna argue FACT over OPINION, the FACT is the JETS are 5-1 and the Phins are 3-2 and will be 3-3 after Sunday's SURE FIRE beating @ the hands of the Steelers. I bet you won't be *****ing about Rex Ryan's arrogance then.

I'd much rather back in to the playoffs and be 30 mins away from the Superbowl than to not make it at all while watching your division rival in it.

GO Steelers...I hope Rapistberger hangs 4 touchdowns on you.

I don't know why losing to the Steelers (or beating them for that matter) would affect anyone's *****ing about Rex Ryan's arrogance (not that I've *****ed about it anyway).

I agree, and I said as much.
I certainly think there is a high likelihood that the Steelers win, Roethlisberger has only thrown 4 TDs (or more) in a game 3 times, and they were all in 2007. He may pass for 3 TDs, but I definitely am not worried about him passing for 4 TDs.
