FINALLY picked up the new Kamelot today (been working in a small town all damn week) and it is STELLAR. While I was there I got "Dead heart in a Dead World" by Nevermore and Tarja's new record (ex-Nightwish singer). Can't stop playing the new Kamelot though so I can't give an opinion on anything else I bought...LOL!

    Any prog fans here? :shifty:

    YouTube - To-Mera - Inside the Hourglass

Highly recommend that CD (Delusions [2008]) if you like long, progressive song songs with female vocals that sometimes sound as though the wonderful Cristina Scabbia is performing them.

YouTube - Barren Earth - Curse of the Red River

Another awesome progressive metal band, this time from Finland. They consist of (ex-)members of such acts as Kreator, Amorphis, Swallow The Sun, and Moonsorrow. Needless to say -- this albums (Curse of the Red River [2009]) kicks some serious *** and recalls some nice '70s prog rock while doing it.

Is anyone else here anxiously awaiting the release of Atheist's Jupiter?

I'm really enjoying the debut Barren Earth album, being a huge StS and Moonsorrow fan I was looking forward to this release, and it definitely doesn't disappoint.

I know noone asked, but I find the Opera type singing extremely cheesy, and the heavy grumbling isnt much better.

Honestly i'm tired of most of the newer metal, and these drummers who play constant double bass with hardly any creativity. You walk into a Guitar Center nowadays and you have 12 yr old kids sitting and doing 32's on the double bass yet have no idea what a groove is. The whole metal thing is starting to get watered down imo.

Gimme the old classic stuff or some of this...

@In_Flames - Very excellent bands there, thank you. The band you used to play in a bit too raw for my liking, however, but solid stuff nonetheless. Did you end up playing on that '98 demo or were you before then?

@OJ - TBH, I'm not too into music for the drums. I think that the drumming fits with what those bands are doing which is what drums are supposed to do.

Would you say that Steve Flynn is a creative drummer? His playing always sticks out to me despite not being very high in the mix.

At some point soon I'll be putting up a video of myself covering that song on guitar (both of them) and bass if anyone cares.

Now for some random semi-local bands:

The guitarist is a great guy and a tremendous talent. I wouldn't recommend listening to any of their other material if you're prone to seizures, however.

The guitarist and drummer for this band went on to form Mastodon:

YouTube - Lethargy - Humor Me

These guys pretty much released this decent slab of old school death metal and disappeared.
YouTube - Banished - Deliver me unto pain

That's about all other Cannibal Corpse that are worth mentioning. There is a really awesome symphonic black metal band though that needs to record something.

Check out Skeletonwitch. The one guitarist has been my best bud since we were 5. This is a video that Adult Swim put out for them as they are on some new metal album from Adult Swim.

More old-school guitar riffs and cookie monster vocals. They were on Ozzfest this year and have been getting a pretty good following. Some of the coolest guys I know - always down for a few beers and a party.

That's awesome, Skeletonwitch is quite popular, at least around here. Not my type of stuff, but they're solid. Funny - all the pictures I've ever seen of them not playing includes them with beer in there hands.

Welcome brother....and yeah, I played with them back in '98. We were more or less known as the American version of Emperor at that time.

Some good stuff there. I've actually met and hungout with the guys (and chick) of Blackguard. Very cool people. Decent live as well. EDIT: I see you like Vader as well. I'm seeing them tomorrow, with Immolation and Abigial Williams. Should be fun!
