We know what he's being told. Henning has told us. "Make plays, but don't turn the ball over".

    :confused1:

He had 29 TDs in 2004. 25 TDs in 2005, when he was a Pro Bowler.

He also helped Steve Smith get the triple crown of receiving (lead the league in TDs, YDS, receptions).

Yeah, that's my mistake. I misread the stats.

Even still, I would argue that 25 and 29 TDs not exactly "set the world on fire" numbers. Moreover, Delhomme had a much better supporting cast to work with. Lastly, though Henning might have been the offensive coordinator for those offensive units, his approach to throwing the football was vastly different then than it is now.

Whatever the reason for that shift (from wide open and attacking to excruciatingly conservative) it looks like the players are more or less in agreement that it's time for a change in philosophy.

P.S. It's not just that Henning is conservative in the passing game. It's also that he has these inexplicable issues with completely abandoning the running game when it's working. That's two big strikes against him.

The approach isn't really all that different. Carolina wasn't any more of a 'wide open, attacking' team. Their QB just made more plays. You can see down field routes every week from this team, they just aren't executing, whether it be a bad throw or a dropped pass.

This team does not run as many downfield routes as Carolina did, nor does it send multiple guys downfield very often.

In fact, more often than not, Miami lines up in max protect and/or runs all but one of their receivers into short or intermediate routes.

Lastly, if I had to guess, Delhomme was allowed to audible once in a while.

"Guess" would certainly fit all of those statements.

"Don't question my play-calling-- yes, I know we haven't run the ball in 5 possessions, I'm well aware. Don't you think I would know? Next time you talk back at me you're riding the bench mister! Now go out there and run a play-action bootleg. Now, I made this next decision extra easy for you; you only have one guy to throw to. So then, go out there and execute!"

It's not really a guess. I don't feel like pulling the numbers right now, but rest assured that the Panthers threw the ball 20+ yards downfield more than 1.5 times a game (which is more or less what the Dolphins are averaging through 8 games).

It's also not a guess that the majority of Miami's passing plays are run out of base, max protect formations.

To Stringer, we are not running as many deep routes as you are saying. I got to listen to the radio broadcast and mandich and his crew were constantly talking about short the routes were being run. Especially in the 2 minute drill.
