The Wildcat was introduced a couple years ago, and because it surprised everyone, it was effective. Since then, it has become almost one dimentional, with Ronnie keeping it and running straight ahead into the pile for no gain. Our offensive (as of late) seems unable to open any holes for our runners. In yesterday's game, however, Ronnie did something new; he actually handed off to Ricky on the sweep, and Ricky picked up very good yardage. Do this more often, and the holes might start to appear in the line? With the fall of both Chads, and our last option (though I've always thought best option) QB now in the lineup, could we see more of the Wildcat? It sure showed up yesterday as a result of our QB losses, right? When it was first introduced, remember how we were led to believe that there were so many different plays that could be run from that formation that it would boggle the mind? Maybe it's time to explore some of these now? We are certainly not gaining much in the conventional running attack (see no-holes-in-OL comment above), and Thigpen is going to need some relief, so what else do we have? Maybe a nice twist would be Marshall at QB; he can obviously throw, and is always touted for his run-after-the-catch ability. How about faking to Ricky on the sweep, then chasing him and using him as a blocker? I have a feeling the Wildcat is not dead, and we might be seeing it reborn again at just the right time. Or does the genius Henning have some other trickery up his very long sleeve? I can't wait to find out.
Honestly, I think the success of the Wildcat on Sunday was more created by the confusion we threw the defense into. They were just as confused as to how we'd line up with it as we were. With Marshall passing out of it, I think they sensed the desperation and unpredictability of what we were going to do in that last few minutes of the quarter. Bottom line I don't know if we'll continue to have the same success with the Wildcat, I'm skeptical, but if we can all the better. I'd love to see Thigpen do something out of it, but honestly with our QB situation now I'd like to limit the contact he takes as much as possible. Cause really, I'm comfortable with him in there, but if something happens to him, things start to look VERY bleak for this team.
well, those who've been praying for the ThiggyCat will probably get their look at it this week. Or at the very least the wildcat with thigpen lined up at WR.
Fluke or not it saved our butt Sunday not knowing if Henne would be able to get back in the game or not. Because its a familiar site the team had a good idea of what they needed to do to buy some time.
Man I get so tired of defending this formation.....Where are all the stat monkeys that show us its temporary YPC this year...''.It should be banned'', it fuc#'s up rhythm'', blah blah blah...tired of that crap. Accept the formation, accept the player operating it, its who we are, as long as that man is on our team. How much more proof do I need.. Why am I the only one that is in love with it.?
Because it literally didn't work until the 10th week of the season. I'm not sure what there is to love about it.
keep hatin, and it will keep proving you wrong... what do I love about it...the fact that it is simply an effective power running formation executed by a player with a unique skillset...whats there not to love..
Henning dialed it up at the end of the 3rd QTR deej Desperation after Henne went down gave David Lee a few minutes to talk to Tyler about what they wanted to do
That Wildcat conversion at the end of the third quarter was lucky as hell. That was a set up the punt play and nobody at home or in the stadium believed it actually worked. I still don't believe it, but if Henning still wants to burn 3-4 plays a week tinkering with it...Well, none of us can stop him.
