**Before I begin I’d like to note everything in this was written on last Friday and I planned on posting this Saturday since I had to work 12 hours and wanted some good discussion while at work, but the forums were down** Anyways - to anyone interested:

The NFL rewind was free last week, so I had a chance to go re-watch the first 8, well 7, I couldn’t put myself through the NE game again, and watch the games with the intention of focusing on Henne alone. I also jotted down a few notes on other areas as well as I felt needed.

One more thing, I pulled the following from simply watching the games and writing down notes on paper, so there is room for user error. Ok onto the games… Well almost. I only noted passes that traveled at least 10 yds from the LOS. I separated 10-15 yds from 15+ yd passes. I also noted after re-watching each play that qualified on Henne’s eyes as best I could. If his helmet never moved from the snap toward the player he passed too, AND no other receivers were in the area it was a stare down (SD). If he went through progressions or there were multiple receivers in the area it was considered a progression (P). Throwaways were voided. I’m also including Red Zone scenarios as we’ve struggled here.

Key: down-distance on yd line (score with Miami’s always first) – Outcome of play (10-15 yd passes) (15+ yd passes)

    @ BUFFALO

RZ: 1-10 FB dive (really?), 2-7 WC, 3-4 Screen to Marshall, 4-5 = FG (3-0)
    2-8 on Mia 37 (3-0) - 12 yds to Marshall (SD)
    3-10 on 50 (3-0) - Incomplete to Marshall (P)
1-10 on Buf 31 (3-0) – Incomplete to Hartline (SD) (behind and at the ankles)
    2-12 on Buf 22 (3-0) – 21 yds to Fasano (SD)
RZ: 1-GL(1) Brown TD run. (10-0)

1-10 on Mia 46 (10-3) – Incomplete to Marshall (SD) (wide open for a TD, way underthrown then dropped)
    3-10 on Mia 46 (10-3) – 10 yds to Bess (P)
2-10 on Mia 20 (10-3) – Incomplete to Marshall (SD) (CB deflected, BM may have saved the INT)
1-15 on Mia 30 (10-3) – Incomplete to Moore (SD) (high and behind WR)
***Henning alert: 1-10 on Buf 48 (13-10) 2:53 left in the game & Buf has 2 time outs – 1-10 RB 5 yd run, 2-5 Incomplete pass, 3-5 Henne sacked. A whopping 53 seconds and no time outs burned. Henning: “bad execution” Reality: “bad play calling coach”. Luckily Trent Edwards only plays drunk***
    Summary:
    Henne: 21 of 34 for 182 – 0 TD – 0 INT (8 passes over 10 yds) (2 of 5 @ 10-15) (1 of 3 @ 15+)
Henne = avg game, nothing special. Dink and dunk passes all game. Threw short of the sticks on 3rd down multiple times. Missed wide open TD bomb to Marshall.
This was typical Sparano football. No turnovers, win by 5. (Really 3 b/c of the free safety at the end of the game)
Run/Pass was 50/50, but should have been at 60/40. The run outside the WC was picking up chunks at a time. The WC gets a pass here b/c it was too soon to know it has become useless.

    @ MINNESOTA

I started separating by quarters in this game. ---

1-10 on Mia 23 (0-0) – 46 yds to Marshall (SD) (money pass first offensive snap)
RZ: 3-1 FB dive, 1-10 WC, 2-4 WC, 1-GL(3) Missed wide open Marshall for TD, 2-GL(3) WC, 3-GL(5) TD Brian Hartline. (7-0)
    1-10 on Mia 33 (7-0) – 19 yds to Hartline (P)
    ---
    1-10 on Mia 32 (7-0) – Incomplete to Hartline (P) (double coverage)
    ---
    No passes over 10
    ---
3-9 on Mia 20 (14-10) – Incomplete to Marshall (P) (almost a crucial INT here)
    Summary:
    Henne: 9 of 15 for 114 – 1 TD – 0 INT (4 passes over 10 yds) (0 of 0 @ 10-15) (2 of 4 @ 15+)
More dink and dunk all game. Below avg performance IMO.
The Defense won this game without a lick of help from the offense. After this game there are no excuses for WC plays as it was painfully obvious it was hurting drives.

1-10 on Mia 30 (0-7) – Incomplete to wide open Hartline (SD) (possible TD, easy 40+ yd gain, but was over thrown)

RZ: 1-10 WC, 2-5 WC, 3-1 Marshall TD (5 yd pass turned into TD) (go ahead TD) (17-14)
***Jason Allen alert – OMG look, it’s a caterpillar!!!! – 67 yd gimmie TD to Edwards***
***Fatty McFatty alert – Hey Jamaal, go down with a fake hamstring injury in the KO return b/c our awesome D is getting pounded***
    1-10 on Mia 25 (17-21) – 28 yds to Hartline (P)
    2-10 on NYJ 48 (17-21) – Incomplete Marshall (SD)
    3-10 on NYJ 48 (17-21) – 41 yds to Marshall (P)
RZ: 1-GL(7) WC (holding), 1-GL(17) 15 yd pass to Hartline, 2-GL(2) fade to Hartline?, 3-GL(2) quick slant to Marshall (should have been INT but BM got his hand in there), FG (20-21)
1-GL(17) – 15 yds to Hartline (P) (part of RZ above)***At this point in the game the O-line was dominating, 2-GL(2) should have been two straight runs and a third if necessary. A fade to Hartline – wow…***
    1-10 on Mia 5 (20-21) – 18 yds to Hartline (P)2-10 on Mia 23 (20-21) – Incomplete Fasano (P)
    ---
***NYJ 3-15 Brad Smith with the WC keeper absolutely runs over Y.Bell 7 yds short of the first down and picks up the first. D holds to FG***
    2-2 on Mia 31 (20-24) – 14 yds to Marshall (P)
3-2 on NYJ 42 (20-24) – Incomplete to Hartline deep. (Empty backfield? – didn’t mind going deep, but keep them honest with a back in…)
***Jason Allen redemption time? – Freebie INT on MIA 25 yd line with room to run. O wait I didn’t catch it, but I celebrated like I did***
***Henning alert –1-10 on NYJ 36 – Goes WC after gaining negative yards on all the attempts combined when including the penalty!! -6 yds!!! Henning: “Come on team, EXECUTE!!!” I believe this play set a Guinness World Record when about 5 million Dolphins fans all rolled their eyes simultaneously. Two plays later – PUNT***
    2-16 on NYJ 42 (20-24) – Incomplete to Hartline
    ***FG = 23-24***
***Defense!! Defense!! Defense!! 6:42 to play, ball in NYJ 20, 13 plays later, including two 3rd down conversions, Jets score a TD and bleed the clock to just under the minute warning. But still hope b/c only play calling has stopped the O so far***
    1-10 on Mia 43 (23-31) – 16 yds to Bess (P)
    1-10 on NYJ 41 (23-31) – 30 yds to Marshal (P) (10 yd pass)
RZ: 1-10 Incomplete fade to Marshall, 2-10 Henne scrambles into a pile, 3-9 quick dump to Brown, 4-4 Incomplete to Fasano (Henne picked Fasano without seeing the D from the start. It was the same play from the first TD. On Rewind you can click on “film room camera” and Marshall had an easy TD. If you want to stare down anyone, make sure it’s the 50 million dollar man.
1-10 on NYJ 11 (23-31) – Incomplete fade to Marshall (SD) (uncatchable 1-1)
***(Had we scored this would be here) Henning alert: 2 pt conversion failed due to WC getting stuffed for -5 yds. I would have bet a large amount of money the WC would have been his go to play***
    Summary:
Henne: 26 of 44 for 363 – 2 TD – 1 INT (last play of game on popup after incompletion so 0 INT in my eyes)
    Henne: 22 passes over 10 yds (11 of 13 @ 10-15) (5 of 8 on 15+) (72% on 22 attempts = very impressive)
Henne A+. Looked like Manning out there making plays left and right
WTF?!?! Was my reaction a lot during this game. The WC was forced over and over and continued to get stuffed every time. You can’t get down 0-14 in the first quarter against division rivals. The stats don’t necessarily show it, but it really felt like the tempo of the offense slowed way down once we made it a FG game again.

Also, I truly believe Braylon Edwards and Dustin Keller are two of the cockiest chumps in the NFL. They get up yapping and putting their helmets in defenders faces every play. If we would have lost this game due to a flag from someone punching either of their faces in, it would have been a W in my book.

    Patriots @ Home

Simply put, I couldn’t watch this game again. Let me just break it down like this:
MIA 1st drive – 8 play drive, pin NE deep in their own territory.
    NE 1st drive – 3 and out.
    MIA 2nd – 7 play drive, TD!
    NE 2nd – 4 and out.
Mia 3rd – 1-10 Henne throws terrible pass = INT on NE 39.
NE 3rd – Very good drive 1-GL(9), held to a FG.
Mia 4th – 1-10 Henne throws another terrible pass = INT on NE 25.
    NE 4th – Another FG.

    Summary:
Henne completely screwed the pooch in the first half with two of the worst passes I’ve seen him throw on top of letting the entire D know where he was going with the ball. These were as bad as the one INT in TB last year. The D stepped up and stopped NE on a 1-GL and a 1-12 on Mia 12 to keep this a ball game.
Second half – TD NE, TD NE, TD NE, TD NE, TD NE – Game over 14-41 at home.

2-2 after 4 which is what I expected. Although I thought we would have lost to Min and beat NE. The Jets have been fuming about getting swept all year so I figured they’d get us in a close one. Watching the game we should have won that but a Jason Allen mistake and the persistent WC (Henning) cost us that game. Still at 1-2 in the division getting to play NYJ and NE again I felt little was lost at this point.
    @ GB

    1-10 on Mia 39 (0-3) – 13 yds to Marshall (SD)
    3-8 on GB 48 (0-3) – 23 yds to Marshall (SD)

RZ: 1-GL(6) Brown, 2-GL(3) FB, 3-GL(2) TD to Bess (7-3)
    3-6 on GB 30 (7-3) – 10 yds to Hartline (P)
RZ: 1-10 INTERCEPTED (You simply can’t stare down Marshall on a 8 yd IN route. On top of this it was thrown inside and was far from a bullet.) No progression from the two bone headed INTs in NE.
***Rare sighting alert – VD burnt for an 86 yd TD. Happens to the best of them VD, your still the man***

1-10 on Mia 9 (7-10) – 18 yds to Marshall (P) (This should have been picked. This was off the hands of the defender into the hands of BM)

1-10 on GB 46 (7-10) – Incomplete to Bess (SD)

    ***
Mia 3 and out, GB 3 and out, Mia FG***
    Summary:
    Henne 23 of 39 for 231 – 2 TD – 1 INT (15 passes over 10 yds) (3 of 6 @ 10-15) (5 of 9 on 15+)
Henne seemed to play a little different after RZ pick and then getting lucky on a non-pick on the MIA 20. Took no chances after that, but we didn’t need him to so better to be safe than sorry in a game like this.
1 man: Mr. 91 Cameron Wake – WOW, what a game. 3 clutch sacks including a huge one in OT. Wake single handedly changed Rogers game and IMO the only reason we won this game.
I also felt the running game was underutilized. Like Buffalo it was a 50/50 split but it shouldn’t have been especially with Henne playing ultra conservative and the running game popping off solid runs all game. And remember, I didn’t record throwaways…

***One last chance: 1-10 Brown run, who is avg 1 yd per carry still (he got 2 here!), 2-8 Fasano drops 1 yd shy of first, 3-8 dump to FB?, 4-6 Arm hit as Henne threw it. Film room camera shows Bess wide open well before arm was hit.***
    Summary:
Henne 23 of 36 for 257 – 1TD – 1 INT (7 passes over 10 yds) (3 of 4 @ 10-15) (3 of 3 @ 15+)Just one of those games that is a battle until the end and when the ref blows the call on the biggest play of the game you rarely win it. The thing is; there is still a chance we lose this game if the call is made correctly, even if it was a small chance.

    Henne: 24 of 37 for 217 – 0 TD – 1 INT (12 passes over 10 yds) (6 of 8 @ 10-15) (2-4 @ 15+)
I think the Bengals are a joke and Palmer sucks. He is slow, with a weak pass, and easy to pick off. They got a lucky 7 and we kicked 5 FGs. This could have been a straight blowout but that’s not Miami’s style. 37 passes vs. 28 runs is absolutely ridiculous and enough proof Henning is an idiot. They couldn’t stop Ronnie or Ricky and the O-line owned the D line. I don’t remember one sack or one running play where the RB was hit behind the LOS. Atrocious play calling, especially with the continued drops. Henning also left the backdoor wide open for a late tie with the shananagans he calls.

1-10 on Bal 29 (10-20) – Incompletion to Marshall in the endzone (tipped by CB)
    ***

    Summary:
    Henne: 22 of 34 for 231 – 0 TD – 3 INT (6 passes over 10 yds) (2 of 2 @ 10-15) (2 of 4 @ 15+)
Coaches: From ST to HC – terrible, terrible game. First off, did Nolan forget RBs can catch passes? If they even slowed down Rice and McGahee we probably win this one. From start to finish they KILLED us with 0-5 yd dump passes that went for TDs 10 – 20 – 30 yds a pop. Insane… Offensive line, what happened here? Baltimore had pressure regularly and easily. This is why you saw very few passes over 10 yds, there was NO time for them. How do you slow down the rush? RUN RUN RUN! Who was dominating at the beginning? Ronnie Brown. Was there ever a reason as to why Henning COMPLETELY abandoned Ronnie Brown… again? If I was Ronnie I wouldn’t even want to resign with this team, even though I understand his friendship with Ricky is deep. Man he doesn’t get a chance to get going, and when he starts off going he gets stopped. This loss pisses me off more than the Steelers loss to be honest. This game made me truly question Sparano and Henning.

So here we are, 4-4 after 8. This is where I thought we would be, although I thought it would have played out like this:
    Wins: Buf, NE, Cin, Bal
    Losses: Min, NYJ, GB, Pit
However I thought it would’ve played out doesn’t matter, we are still 4-4 and that’s where my expectations were from the day I saw the schedule. But due to the loss at Balt and how we lost I have to say the questions started rolling in my head about some things, and then while sitting down to play a little 3 on 3 Madden the scroll at the bottom read: Pennington in, Henne out for Titans game…

    BOOOOOOM!!!!!! went my head.

The decision for me was made. If the coaches get canned at the end of this year, I do not care. Sparano can take his 2” vertical jumping around like a clown on a FG from 4-GL at the 1 to take a 1 pt lead back to being an O-line coach.

I have two train of thoughts after re-watching the games and focusing my attention on Henne and his game.

The one thing that stood out like a sore thumb was the fact Henne almost never gives his guy a chance for YAC. It is under 10% I say and maybe even closer to 5% of his completions. And when I say YAC I mean at least get an extra 5 yds. Diving forward 2 or 3 yards is not YAC. So from this perspective I can see why they are making the switch and trying to see if Pennington who just seems to put the ball in a favorable position for the WR can spark the offense. The playoffs are not shot, not even close. Are we in a hole? Yes. I don’t see Sparano making this move unless he truly believes this is what is best for the offensive woes.

However, if we beat PIT and were currently sitting at 5-3 would this have happened? Would the discussion of benching Henne even be a discussion? No freaking way. And this is why IMO I hate this move. I don’t care if we go on a 6-2 run with Pennington, I will argue we would have gone 6-2 with Henne as well. I don’t care if we put up 35 a game, I will argue we would be putting up 35 a game with Henne as well. We have played beastly defenses so far this year. Min, NY, NE, GB, Pit, Bal are you kidding me? 6 of our 8 opponents have been against top D’s and were wondering why we are not putting up 30 points a game. It doesn’t take a genius to put A and B together. The schedule lightens up a little now, so I’m already expecting the offense to increase in production. The question is, was Henne the reason we lost any of the 4 games?

NYJ – No, he played lights out. Looked like Manning.

NE – He played a piss poor first have but we went into the locker room with the lead, enough said. It’s no secret the ST set NFL records with one of the worst performances in the history of football. So no, not Henne.

PIT – Should have been a W first off. Say Ben never fumbles. The fins took the lead with 3:27 to go. ST allows a kick return to the 50 so right off the bat the momentum is heavily on PIT’s side. Henne had a decent game 23/36 no picks outside the last play of the game, which wasn’t a pick. D gave up a bomb of a TD and Hartline fumbled in Miami territory. None of those fall on Henne. And again we should have WON!!! So no, not Henne.

BAL – We got schooled in the coaching department here, BIG TIME. Nobody played that good except Ronnie Brown, but Henning is anti-whatworks. So what happens after the coaches got picked on like little school boys? They go on a roster rampage. Bench Henne, big mistake. Waive Allen, our biggest playmaker on D and now have absolutely no depth, big mistake. I’m not saying Allen is great, but he shouldn’t have been dropped with our current depth. Want to make a statement – take him off the active game day roster.

So in a nutshell, I feel like Henne needs to continue to work on his progressions and start giving his receivers a chance to make some plays. You can’t play dink/dunk offense and not get YAC, simple as that. I for one still have hope in Henne and I also hope that we get a new OC. Henning may not be a bad OC, but he is simply a terrible fit for Miami, and therefore in my eyes, a horrendous OC. And last but not lease, if Sparano likes Henning ball, then Sparano is not a good fit for Miami either, and therefore needs to be canned. I really hope the solution is to bring in a new OC and keep TS, but whatever happens - happens. I’m still going to order the NFL ticket and wake up my sleeping child and confuse my dog with my cheering and shouting at the TV.

Awesome breakdown. I had a feeling Henne wasn't the problem and you confirmed it with the breakdown. The benching of Henne was clearly the wrong move IMO and you confirmed it. I think Henning is a good OC, but like you said just not in miami. I had the feeling TS kept telling him, the WC isn't working and he kept running it telling TS it will start to work again.

Henning has made some good calls as well during the season, but his poor calls have put a negative lens over them.

The TD to fasano in GB for instance was a great play call. That is one great call that stood out. However, as noted above all the terrible decisions really lessen the appreciation of the good calls.

I think Thigpen will take advantage of his current opportunity, which will limit the timeline for when Henne will be back in the starting role, but having two capable qb's is not a bad problem to have. I still also believe Henne is our long term answer, he needs to make adjustments but he needs a OC and HC who will let him grow a little faster, I think the mistakes will still happen, they just won't be the same mistakes week after week.

But if they have Henne under such control that he is only allowed to do certain things, NFL D's will pick up on it and take full advantage. Henne has to be able to audible at the line if nessecary, control the timing of the offense on his schedule etc etc. He's not free flowing enough to keep D's off balance, the play calling and leash he has on has made him somewhat robotic, which IMO is leading to his tells for D's to pick up on.

Henne has made some great plays for us, made some mistakes but considering what he is allowed to do and not do from the coaches, i've been very happy with his play so far this year. I would like to see what he is capable of if he ran the offense, not Henning. I think however the season finishes, it will be one or the other, Henne or Henning will be gone because their not producing together like a OC and QB should be, even though they both have talents that are good enough to succeed at the NFL level. Henning needs to realize if he has players strengths that are in conflict with his playcalling strategies he needs to make adjustments to give his players attributes the best chance to succeed. If he doesn't take advantage of Henne's arm, that falls on him IMO.

Awesome breakdown? It actually proves something? What did it prove? It proved NOTHING but Henne does not throw the ball down the field. It says exactly what the title says it would.

He felt so strongly about it that he said it twice.

This is what the post proved and you didn't even need the post. All you have to do is watch the game (or check the gamebook) without the Chad Henne rose colored glasses on your face.

Thx for the post. I definitely think Henning needs to be gone (this) next year. Not because he sucks, he doesn't, but because his offense doesn't fit Henne and certainly doesn't fit Thigpen. We need a Norv Turner type offense that emphasizes stretching the field, not this dink and dunkin doughnuts on the scoreboard offense we have now. I think the move to Pennington was because he can run the dink and dunk better than Henne, but if Henne is the short-mid term QB for this team then we need to have an offense that caters to his strengths. Henning clearly isn't the answer.

I was mildly amazed watching the Tennessee game. Its pretty clear that Henning decided to use more of an attacking style game plan. More receivers, less max protect, quite a few empty sets, even a Pat Cobbs sighting. It was like 2008 all over again. My guess is that Henning wrote the script for Penny & decided to stick with it even after he went down. Hopefully the old man will stick with the aggressive approach and not dial it back into 1st gear now that his boy is on IR.

alright ruler of the universe, we sure did good with Thigpen in at QB for a whole game. Take your Henne hating glasses off for a second.

We definitely opened it up and if this was planned only for Pennington then that just proves all the more Henning has no clue how to run Miami's offense. Henne has shined when getting down early and forcing Henning to open up the play calling more. It's down right frustrating at time watching what is being called on the field. /end quote

People can say execution all day long, but there is such a thing as being setup to fail, and this is taking place more than bad execution.

We know for a fact the conservative, keep it a game until late in the 4th is not going to take us anywhere, so why not flip it around and see what happens if we try and go 3-4 wide every down. We have no run blocking anymore, but the pass protection hasn't been too bad. Although I'd say it's regressing quickly since the Ravens game. Put the game on Henne's shoulders and see what happens. I'd rather watch Henne try and win a ball game, then watch the D try and do it. I can handle all the Henne haters b/c my guess is 80-90% of them have no clue about football outside of Miami.

What young QBs are so much better than Henne? Ryan, the #3 pick, who's team does not play conservative at all. Go watch Atlanta on Sundays they are airing it out and trying to put up TDs with two score leads. There is no way Henning does that, nor does he allow us to get two score leads.

Flacco, another first rounder? I'll take Henne over Flacco all day. Flacco under pressure it one of the worst QB's I've watched. Get to Flacco a couple of times early and his game takes a big dive south. Henne is the opposite. I would LOVE to see Cam Cameron as the OC with this offense.

Stafford? I like Stafford, but what good is a QB who is always on the bench?

Sanchez? LOL - This isn't baseball, you can't try and buy superbowls without it heavily effecting the future. Could you imagine if you swapped out Sanchez and Henne right now in Miami? That would be brutal for us fans.

Freeman - I haven't watched to many TB games but they are winning a lot of very close games right now. Freeman seems to be Mr. 4th quarter as he continues to make plays late in games. I don't know enough to have much of an opinion on him.

    White? :shifty: J/K

Bradford? Every team that currently owns a QB listed above would love to have Bradford over their current QB, with the exception of Matt Ryan, maybe. These guys come around once or twice a decade.

    Tebow? Clausen? I'll say no.

Give me Henne over all of them except Bradford. I even question if Ryan would have much more success in Miami than Henne up to this point. I just don't understand why people are pointing the finger to Henne as this teams problems... By the way, we have to be the only team in the NFL that calls a FB dive almost every singly RZ trip... Henning

I wasn't trying to prove anything. I was simply putting together pass attempts that traveled over 10 yds for those, like myself, that wondered what this looked like on paper. If you disagree with my opinions then that is ok, high five.

Henne rose colored glasses - LOL, that was funny. Can you post a link as there where I can buy those? To be honest, I'm not 100% sold on Henne, but when compared to what's available, and what was available, I'm very happy with Henne. Now I wouldn't complain one bit if we go and drop a first round pick on another QB, or a second, or the entire draft. You can't win in the NFL without a solid QB. But if were going to do it, get a real passer, not a Pat White gimmick QB. Also get rid of the guy in the booth that probably can't even see the field at this point in his life b/c he has no clue how to ride what is working and take advantage of what the D is doing. And no I couldn't do it, but there are people getting paid the big bucks to go out and find someone who can.
