95% graduation rates. And the entire football program just earned a Masters in Catastrophic Failure

I'd like to thank Randy for making my life here in Tampa even more unbearable.
I'll now have to listen to these idiot Bull fans over here talk about how they are now the top team in the state.

It's amazing how the fan base over here talks so much crap.
It's like they've won 3 Natl. Championships when in actuality they haven't done anything as of yet.
The zoo will be 100 times worse now.

    Thanks Shannon!

    Money talks…

    … And BS walks.

Do you actually think Harbaugh will be content to stick around at Stanford? He’s had a great run there, but it’s Stanford. They’ll never be the best team in the Pac-10, let alone a national title contender. Harbaugh might get a sniff or two for an NFL job, but the Saban-Petrino Effect is still chilling the flow of college coaches to NFL head coach positions, so I don’t think a move to the NFL is in the cards. For now.

So in comes the University of Miami, a program that has given the NFL some of its top talent. If Harbaugh has NFL aspirations, what’s better for his job prospects: sitting around at Stanford, building a personal fiefdom that will never reach the top… or going to UM, building the program back up, possibly winning a national title, and kick-starting the flow of UM talent back into the NFL?

    It worked for Jimmy Johnson.

Eh, neither has it been a horrible job, Shannon is clueless, but the team has not been 3-9 bad, and it does have national cachet.

    The problem is:

Administration is not concerned about football, as in it is not important to them that a Contending team hits the field, they are content with "good" and a 95% graduation rate and no negative headlines.

Shannon just signed that extension, an act of pure genius on his part, supposedly because "it was hurting recruiting" for him not to have that extension, he doesn't develop anyone and if there are few to no high draft picks coming from Shannon's Miami, Recruits, like Fans and Boosters, will say "no thanks" to supporting the team with their dollars.

Until that happens, Shalala is happy to draw a small profit from the program and call it a day.

    I hope so.

But don't count on it; Shalala, like Tad Foote before her, has a cynically disdainful attitude toward the football program. She uses it as a cash cow, siphoning off profits from it to fund academic programs and other athletic that don't support themselves, while The U's facilities remain disheveled and inadequate and always rank near the bottom of all DI schools.

If she cans Shannon it won't be because she has the best interests of the program at heart; it'll be because Shannon is set to have a negative impact on the money the program brings in.

That is my take as well, now could be a group of fmr UM players and boosters rang her ear enough that she may make a move, but with 1.7 millie or whatever his remaining contract is, I have a hard time seeing her just firing him after giving him an extension.

That said, Shannon was supposed to be a defensive minded coach, I've yet to see it out on the field USF moved right down the field when they had to in order to win.

I’ll believe it when I see it.

And even if Shannon gets fired, that’s only half the battle. Shalala hired Shannon: there’s no guarantee she won’t screw up a second time. This is where Kirby Hocutt needs to step in big time.

Not just that, but she’ll consider Shannon’s firing an immediate hit to the football program’s cash flow, because she’ll have to either buy him out, pay the full contract (essentially paying him not to coach), or attempt to fire him with cause and then fund the inevitable legal battle. Keeping Shannon is the cheapest option and is therefore her first choice. Also just as important to Shalala is that Randy’s kids graduate and stay out of trouble. Only 1 arrest under Shannon goes a long way for an administration that considers The U documentary to be a negative portrayal.

There’s also the affirmative action angle. Shalala firing a black guy to hire potentially a white guy (Gruden, Harbaugh) would be a tough sell.

Depending on whether he still wants to be a HC or not, he could find a decent DC position.

Well, to me, Shannon is good at cleaning up a program and leading it to moderate success and graduating athletes etc, but imho he is not a good enough coach to be charged with developing NFL caliber athletes, if he were at say William and Mary or Penn they would be happy with him

Who do you guys 'realistically' think is a candidate for the HC spot?

I heard rumors of a few teams (don't know which) looking at our DC Bud Foster...

Honestly inflames, I think they go with an offensive minded coach so I was half joking about Mike Leach.

Guy I'd love to see in Miami is Mark Trestman.

The guy the internet is talking up right now is Jon Gruden. The rumors are that the ENTIRE staff is getting the boot tonight. That doesn' t happen unless they already have their staff in place. I think that's who they end up with, or he's the front runner right now.

Not if they are not invited to a Bowl, then they could interview several candidates.

Holcutt also dropped the hammer, which could mean what you are alluding to, but it remains to be seen.
