What? When? Gruden never found a franchise QB in Tampa or in Oakland. QBs he kept on the Bucs roster include Chris Simms, Bruce Gradkowski, Brian Griese, Jeff Garcia, and Luke McCown. Going into a season with four quarterbacks on your roster, in part because you don’t want to admit you made a mistake in giving a big contract to one of them, is not “QB centric.” It is “QB careless.” The good news is that college rosters are larger than NFL rosters, so he can get away with having four or even five QBs… assuming he needs to recruit that many. He’ll inherit Jacory, Morris, and likely Bridgewater.
Des, you misunderstand, Gruden has a love affair with Qb's and knows what he wants from them, that is a huge change from Shannon and Coker, Gruden was dealing with "finished" products in Tampa, now he has a chance to work with them prior to hitting the pros. If he is hired that is.
It's possible, but isn't that still an indictment of the coach if the player doesn't care what he thinks? Cooper was a far less effective version of himself this year and James is solid, but not spectacular. Johnson was one of the top recruits in the country and in his limeted time looks special. I just don't get wasting a year of his eligibility to return kickoffs. You're probably right. The position coaches IMO, are the biggest indictment of Shannon. None of those guys belonged at a big time program and did a horrible job.
I think you need to read up on way Gruden used QBs in Tampa. Constant rotation, no clear-cut starter, no improvement in QB play. Walking in to a situation with three QBs... Well, I hope he learned from his time in Tampa. Pick a guy, stick with him, develop him. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Not in all cases. He may have shown flashes but it doesn't mean he was better than Cooper and Miller. You forgot Damien Berry too.
I am aware of it, I'm also aware that "his" Qb's stuck around the NFL, Simms, Gradkowski, Garcia etc.
I wish I could care more about college football to explain it Alen. Put it this way, working for Gruden was no bar to any Qb who worked for him
I didn't forget him, I just don't have an issue with how he was used. He's a good player and deserved as much PT as he got.
Jeff Garcia was cut by the Bucs after Gruden was fired. He went to Philadelphia and backed up Donovan McNabb. He had 0 pass attempts at 3 rush attempts that season. He’s currently playing in the UFL. Chris Simms pulled a Ray Feinga and kept being signed to and cut from the Titans roster as the third string QB. He re-signed last week to be their third string QB again, buried on the depth chart behind such quality quarterbacks as Rusty Smith. Bruce Gradkowski was cut after 2007, washed out of the Browns after one year, and looked decent in spot duty for the Raiders in 2009 and 2010. We’re currently playing against him in Oakland. Brian Griese has been out of the NFL since after 2008. No Gruden, no roster spot. Luke McCown is David Garrard’s backup in Jacksonville. This is not the resume of an elite quarterback developer.
OT: Just when I thought I couldn't respect Andre Johnson more he shows Jeff Fisher what happens when you coach ***** *** players who start ****.
A 49ers beat writer says that Gruden has canceled his Chalk Talk session for tomorrow. (MNF game is Cardinals/49ers, in case you didn’t know/care like the rest of the USA.) Looking like a done deal at this point.
Ironic, Peter King just reported that Jon Gruden may be high on the 49ers list of successors to Mike Singletary.
What you are missing is, they all landed back in the NFL. Not every Qb is going to be a starter, however the fact the marginal guys are still hanging around means Gruden was not a Qb's dead end...
The two former Gruden QBs who are still on a roster are second or third string backups. This is not a success, padre. Yes. YES. Do it, Hocutt!
Yes, yes it is, Gruden was fired 3 yrs ago, Gradkowski is still starting games in the NFL and he was throwaway pick back in the day, put it this way, how many other throwaway pick Qb's are hanging on around the NFL that come from the same place?
@Manny_Navarro: Hearing Jon Gruden has agreed to $3.4 mil deal to become #UM's next coach. Trying hard to confirm it officially.
Gruden would be great HC hire .He has NFL experience and the stature to impress recruits nationwide.Plus he will be a media darling. BTW He has been studying the spread offense for some time now and I dont think it is because he wants to use that offense in the NFL. If hired dont be surprised if the spread becomes his offensive mantra.I say that because the spread requires great athletes and the Canes always have access to great athletes . They just have not been exploited adequately IMO.The fact that NFL players from the U have had success in the pros despite mediocre results in college proves that.
I honestly don't think there's a better choice than Gruden, and really, I'm not sure it's even close. Don't get me wrong, there are candidates out there that might make excellent head coaches. There may be another Urban Meyer or Nick Saban hiding somewhere. But to me Gruden is a sure thing. I think he makes a much better college coach than a NFL coach. He has the charisma and stature to bring attention and recruits to the program and that's not even counting his ability to lead men and his X's and O's. If hired, he will immediately make this program matter. Really I think the only risk is an NFL job. But the hope is, if he does leave, he'll leave the program in great shape and it will be a highly coveted job. Like I said though, I think he's better suited for college and if he stays at Miami can turn into a coaching figure along the lines of a Steve Spurrier or Nick Saban. I'm just afraid I'm getting my hopes up too high for getting him b/c I think it's a perfect match and at this point if he doesn't come I'll be pretty upset.
I can't get the link up but he released a statement "I am committed to Monday Night Football and to ESPN. I enjoy working with Mike, Jaws and our entire crew and am just trying to get better at this job."
Wait.... "Plenty of Jon Gruden not headed to the University of Miami talk coming out. Translation: The money ain't to his liking just yet. Stay tuned." Omar Kelly/Twitter
I still have faith it's him...his 'statement' didn't say a direct 'no' to taking the Canes job. Just sayin.
