The guy was looked in for 4 more years and they do this. This move does nothing but ensuring the Rockies will blow in a couple of years when the have no money, and end up giving away Tulo, A-Rod style..

Exactly, there was no need to lock him in that long when he was already signed through 2014. Also adding to the fact that Tulo hasn't always been an ironman in his short career, that would make me pause for a bit as well. Don't get me wrong he's a very good player that plays great defense with a good arm at a hard position to fill (so this isn't like the Phillies bonehead move to extend Ryan Howard this year) but I can't see how this contract is going to end well for Colorado.

When bad teams do dumb things????

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond is drawing trade interest.

Also, just once, would like to see them land and win a FA bid.

According to Jim Bowden of FOX Sports, the Orioles have made a "significant offer" to free agent first baseman Paul Konerko.

After playing through tendinitis in his right wrist for much of the season Brett Gardner is scheduled to undergo surgery next week. He had a very strong season offensively and defensively despite the injury, and Marc Carig of the Newark Star Ledger reports that Gardner is expected to be fully recovered in time for spring training.

In other Yankees surgery news, Carig reports that reliever Alfredo Aceves went under the knife yesterday “to repair a left clavicle he injured in a bike-riding accident in Mexico.”
And unlike Gardner he’s expected to be out of commission for “more than four months,” putting his status for next season in question.

Eh Ian Desmond isn't anything special, if they can get someone good back for him, why not? Plus they have Danny Esponia who I believe is a better defensive SS anyway. The O's trying to get Konerko is just dumb, just because you have money doesn't mean you should waste it.

Wily Mo will certainly help Arizona cut down on their strike out problem.

Got to love the hot stove reporting. A couple of reports are saying the Red Sox are planning on meeting Scott Boras today to talk about Werth, Beltre and Varitek, while other reports are saying the Red Sox met with Boras yesterday. So which one is it?

Anyway it looks like the Red Sox are going to non-tender Hideki Okajima, can't say I'm surprised nor do I think it's a bad idea. He's declined each season since 2007 and he just didn't look happy/comfortable all last year for whatever reason. If they can get him to sign a 1 year deal with a lower base pay, fine bring him back but I wouldn't spend 3.5-4 million on him like what he'd likely get in arbitration.

The next week or 2 you should start to see a bunch of trades/free agent signings happen. Tonight at midnight is the deadline for teams to tender contracts to players so we might see a few trades done today. Starting Monday is the GM winter meetings where teams really start to sign FAs. Of course I think every FA is waiting for Cliff Lee to sign. I'd be shocked if Crawford or Werth sign before Lee does.

Report: Giants re-sign Pat Burrell to one-year contract
To be fair, while Burrell was all sorts of awful during the postseason, he batted .266/.364/.509 with 18 home runs, 51 RBI and an 872 OPS over 289 at-bats after the Rays gave up on him in May. He was a legitimate middle-of-the-order presence for the Giants during the second half of the season, slugging 13 home runs in 198 at-bats.

Jayson Stark is reporting that “officials of two clubs monitoring Adrian Beltre‘s negotiations” believe that Adrian Beltre could sign with the Oakland A’s quickly, possibly as soon as today.

Troy Renck of the Denver Post hears that the Rockies are close to an agreement with Lance Berkman.

So SF wins a WS and then decides to resign Huff and Burrell and sign Miguel Tejada. Apparently their next goal is to win every single slow pitch softball beer league in America. Or field a team with less range than Jonah Hill and Derek Jeter. Seriously though I've hated every move the Giants have made this offseason so far but at least they only gave Tejada and Burrell 1 year deals. Although my guess is Burrell will be DFA by June.

Eric Hinske signs with the Braves

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the White Sox "appear to be closing in on" a deal with free agent slugger Adam Dunn 4yr/56M. Several Sox players are under the belief that not only is Dunn done deal, but PK [Paul Konerko] is close to returning.

Adam is signing with CHW 4/60 million I believe. A win for both pairs of Sox as signing Dunn probably takes them out of the Adrian Gonzalez market next year, especially if they resign Konerko like they're rumored to.

White Sox not messing around...fast turn of events....
According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the White Sox have agreed a two-year contract with catcher A.J. Pierzynski. Pierzynski was rumored to be close to a deal with the Blue Jays just hours ago, but he's heading back to Chicago on a deal worth around $8 million.

Mo will resign with Yanks for 2yrs @ 15M each. Glad thats done. Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the Red Sox and Angels both tried to "steal" Mariano Rivera from the Yankees with a three-year offer. Rivera turned them down.

Michael S. Schmidt of the New York Times reports that the Yankees and Dodgers had serious discussions about a Russell Martin-for-Francisco Cervelli trade last night. But it was nixed.

Hmmmmm...not sure how I feel about this!!!! Just not a huge fan of Martin and what he offers...although really dont need his bat to be huge; but behind the plate an upgrade???

That's how far down Martin has fallen huh? That would have been a good trade for the Yankees for sure. I bet Martin's hip was a big issue on why the trade didn't go down. And yeah I think Martin is an upgrade behind the plate compared to Cervelli.

A few years ago is key...but because of the HIP...and his D has taken a dive along with his bat. I dont think its a huge difference (especially salary) today. And I do want to see (probably like BoSox) a new YOUNG catcher from the system step up in Spring and have the torch passed from Jorge. Romaine and Montero, or another, all eyes will be on you.

From all reports neither Montero or Romaine can be everyday MLB catchers due to their defense. So the Yankees' plan of getting Posada out from behind the plate to DH to upgrade their catching situation with either Montero or Romaine is a little curious to say the least. I actually think the Yankees are saying that to try to boost up trade value of both guys and if an impact player comes around they will deal either guy for that player, that's why I think they were willing to let Montero go for Cliff Lee this summer. I think the Yankees realize Montero doesn't have a real future with the team since he's most likely position is 1B or DH and those spots will be locked up by Teixeira and Arod for the next 7 or 8 years.

Oh, I agree...but paying Russell for similar D doesnt make sense to me. I also am confident Montero and Romaine will out hit Russell at this stage. So its about PAY for UPSIDE too.

I wouldnt be shocked to see one or both moved for arm....but still dont see Russell in pinstripes. You know who I would love to target....go to ARI and grab Montero from them. If ARI can dangle Upton and Reynolds...heck, Cashman go get this young boy.

I don't think there's any question either player would out hit Martin but they're not the same defensively.

I don't think Montero Version ARZ would be available. The DBacks traded Snyder last year to make room for Montero to be the everyday guy (and to clear up payroll) so even though players like Upton and Reynolds (who let's face it outside of his power and his stats against LHP brings nothing else to the table) are available it doesn't mean the everyone else would be. Although I do wonder if the Yankees offered Montero straight up for Montero if AZ would say no or not. Of course Kevin Towers knows the Yankees' system pretty well.

That would certainly be a very interesting trade offer. I wonder if Arizona would bite on that one and stick MonteroNYY on 1B and maybe try Romaine out behind the plate and see if he can stick or maybe a corner OF spot since he has a strong arm.

White Sox have traded veteran reliever Scott Linebrink to the Braves for mid-level pitching prospect Kyle Cofield. Chicago will reportedly send some cash to Atlanta to cover part of the one season and $5.5 million left on Linebrink’s four-year, $19 million deal and he’ll slot into the Braves’ bullpen as a setup man. In exchange for Linebrink the White Sox get some payroll flexibility and minor leaguer Kyle Cofield, a 2005 eighth-round pick whom Baseball America ranked as the 24th-best prospect in the Braves’ farm system. A ground-ball pitcher with poor strikeout and K/BB numbers, he currently projects as a potential middle reliever down the road.

Blue Jays acquired RHP Carlos Villanueva from the Brewers for a player to be named later.

There has been A LOT of noise in the past 3 hours about an Adrian Gonzalez to Boston deal. Usually the deals that get talked about a lot never happen but I think both sides are really motivated at this point to work something out. Hopefully neither Casey Kelly or Jose Iglesias is in the deal but I'm sure that's wishful thinking on my part. Some reporters said Heath Bell has been talked about as well, which would be a huge get for the Sox pen if they could get him too.

That makes the most sense from the BoSox side of things, however for the pads it is a bad deal as AG would be worth some, not all, of the Sox's best prospects, adding Bell after the cream had been removed for Gonzalez does not make sense.

Ship him to a different team for some of their top guys as the Sox farm would be lesser after moving for AG.

You're assuming there's a big market for Heath Bell right now. I know it might be hard to believe but there are a lot of RPers available as FA that wouldn't cost prospects. Besides from Tampa Bay what other contending team needs a closer? You have to think SD knows Bell's market right now. Plus you also assume that by adding Heath Bell to the deal the Padres might be able to land a better player in the Sox package. It's about quality not quantity.

If the GM is not getting top value for AG from the BoSox he is in the wrong line of work.

As for Bell, Closers are always top value, RH or LH, why try to double up on a team the GM has already worked on in the trade for the All Star first basemen?

GMs don't always get fair or top value for players. Do you really think Omar Infante and Mike Dunn was top value for Dan Uggla? It all depends on the market for these players. As good as Gonzalez and Bell are there's not a big market for 1B or closers out there right now. Only a handful of teams need a 1B that are playoff type teams and none of those teams could match the Red Sox in terms of prospects available or money to sign him. If the Yankees didn't have Teixeira than SD would be having a field day right now. But that's not the case. None of the main teams (NYY, NYM, PHI, STL, LAD, LAA, CHW) have a spot for him. The only other teams that could be in the mix is TB because they have good prospects (but there's no way they'd be able to resign him next year) and the Cubs but their farm is dry.

Itmeans of the BoSox's top 6 prospects, the Pads will land 3 of them, and Bell will be shopped elsewhere for 2 top prospects.

There is little value in moving Bell to the BoSox's #4 and #6 prospects, a different team will offer their #1 and #6 guys for him, that is why a package deal makes no sense as the BoSox's farm is not that loaded with MLBers.

No team will trade SD their #1 prospect for Bell, the market for relievers just isn't there, if it was Bell would have been moved already. And you're just throwing random prospect numbers out there without mentioning actual players. Who's to say Boston's #4 or #6 prospect isn't better than Random Team X's top prospect? Boston has a pretty deep farm system, they're probably in the 7 to 10 area, no excellent superstar types like a Harper or Trout but a bunch of solid everyday future MLB players.

Red Sox, Padres Agree On Adrian Gonzalez Trade

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 4 at 6:30am CST]

6:30am: Adrian Gonzalez is expected in Boston today for a physical, reports Nick Cafardo of the Globe. Gonzalez had shoulder surgery to clean up his right labrum in October and has a four or five month recovery timeline. Cafardo says talks have centered around Casey Kelly and Anthony Rizzo, and the deal "would likely involve three or four players from the Sox, including one who is major league-ready." ESPN's Buster Olney tweets that all players have been agreed to and the Red Sox are now trying to work out an extension with Gonzalez. MLB has approved a negotiating window.
