And it would allow John Gruden to elevate his Brother Jay into the national spotlight as well as missing the labor difficulties that are coming to the NFL, so a 2 yr deal would make some sense, or 2+1 deal as a 3yr deal makes recruiting simpler. Dan Mullen's name is also persisting.
Does Jay Gruden still coach in the UFL? I'm surprised he never got a college or pro gig. I remember him as HC of the Tampa team in the Arena League.
Okay, spoke with a guy that is very connected to money people that contribute to the "U" and he says that the media is pretty bad in doing research. Basically, the media is dumb and worthless. The Bucs owe Gruden 5 million this year. That 5 million CAN be used by the U to pro-rate their offer to make it more enticing. They might be able to give him the same money that they had committed for 4 years and instead give it to him for 3..and have the Bucs pick up the tab for this upcoming season with their 5 million. The "U" is all-in on this and Gruden is their guy. There is 2 million that is on a fast track for weight room and facility upgrades as soon as Gruden signs. Usually when the money people line up behind a candidate..the university will make every effort to land said candidate. They expect an answer soon...as in...probably by today. If not...there is a name that I was given that will be explored. Tommy Tuberville. But this is very real and they are trying to get it done.
Yep, with the Florida Tuskers, they were in the Title game back to back years. Imho, he makes the deal work, he could be the OC, show what he can do, when Gruden pulls stumps, if he were successful, he would be the natural replacement and have one heck of a career opportunity with the Hurricanes.
Interesting, Mike Leach is in the Keys and mentions he is interested in the Canes job: http://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports...exas-tech-coach-mike-leach-wants-1086788.html
It was the Orlando team that he coached. But at one point, Jay was pulling double-duty, quarterbacking the Predators in Orlando while coaching the Bucs on Jon's staff in Tampa. The guy is a football junkie.
This thing is pretty much a done deal. Adam Schefter and Peter King should stick to NFL football instead of sticking their nose somewhere they have no business in. Gruden and Hocutt are meeting in Tampa today, and an announcement could be made as soon as today. Jay Gruden will be the OC, and Jim Leavitt the DC. Obviously there's a slim chance this doesn't get done, but Hocutt won't allow that to happen. That's what I'm hearing from people I consider credible.
I just talked with one of UM's oldest trustees. He said that usually the trustees are told and asked about hiring or the firing of any head coach. This time none of them were told that they were even considering firing Shannon. They're not very happy, or were not until they finally were informed that they were meeting with John Gruden today. He said that they're being very discreet about Gruden and getting any kind of info is next to impossible. He also said that the report in todays herald siting trustees as their sources were dead wrong. The info leaked was not known to them at that time. They found out after the article. So hopefully your guy/girl is close to the AD or the pres....
We're hearing that it is not mutual. Thank goodness. I like Trestman personally but after The Gru of course
Ozzy! Long time no see. Hope things are good for you man. Happy Holidays! I'm hoping we find a coach soon, Gruden, Leach, I'm hoping it's Gruden. I think he would be a good fit for the team's personality.
Trestman is a weird weird dude Ozman, almost like he is half Gaulic nutty I doubt anything could pry him out of Montreal other than maybe a HC job in the NFL and even then I wouldn't bet on it, plus he is under contract until 2012. I like Leach, like him a lot actually, his style of offense would fit hand in glove with the type of talent they land at Miami.
Yea, you give Leach the athletes Miami can get, and pair him with a decent DC and you would be in for some fun games for Miami (not for the teams they're facing, lol).
I just spoke to two people and got basically the same answer: its possible you hear something today, but don't be surprised if you don't. As I've said all along, don't take anything any local reporter has to say seriously. When you hear a national reporter confirm something, then its official.
The problem with Leach is, when you get fired for locking a student athlete in a shed for a period of time on multiple occasions and that student athlete has a famous dad, you arent going to get many Head Coaching opportunities anymore. But for those who want leach, you'll be glad to know Donald Trump is on you side: http://www.usatoday.com/communities/campusrivalry/Index
With all due respect, I've been hearing since the UVA game that everyone wanted Shannon fired, and it was just a matter of getting Shalala to sign off on it. They also have had communication with Gruden for over 10 days now.
Thanks, and to add to that: Gruden is noted as the one who initiated the contact between him and UM (kirby).
Eh, the Canes will always be hated FFG, so in that sense it makes no difference what "they" think. What makes Leach attractive is he has a proven track record and would not break the bank to hire assistants which is the other down side with Gruden, his staff would cost large dollars as well, with Leach a top notch staff would not break the budget. That said, it would not surprise me at all to see Tuberville or Mullen in the job because "good" is all that is required and I suspect Gruden is not going to sign in Miami, not with 5 million coming in from Tampa Bay and the MNF gig.
http://blogs.miaminewtimes.com/riptide/2010/12/university_of_minnisota_intere.php Shannon has interest from another U of M...innesota.
Good for him. I have no il feelings for Shannon. I didn't think we'd ever become a championship team under him, but I didn't dislike him. I hope he gets the job and does very well (unless they play The U). Back to the lecture at hand.... THE GR
Dan LeBatard: "The "U" is going all out for John Gruden...but John Gruden has told somebody close to him that he is NOT interested AT ALL."
The amount of misinformation flying around has been insane, he contacted us, we barely got him to listen to us, he's about to sign, he'll never sign, he's using us, we're using him. I think about 3 people know whats going on, Gruden, Shalala and Kirby and I'm going to wait till one of them says something.
Guys, when Randy Shannon was hired, the national media reported it before the players were informed. It wasn't right, and Hocutt will not let that happen again.
