I think they should hire him as he fits some of the things the U needs in a Head Coach as there is tons of money involved and they still have to pay Shannon off. But in my gut, I can see some SFL version of Jim Tressel, staid, boring, blahh.
I like Leach. Let me get that out of the way. BUT. The Guy has a lawsuit currently against ESPN. Not a good thing for the U to have your coach suing somebody YOU NEED. and..He is a DRUNKARD. I like Drunks....but Drunks only mix with spectacular recruiting classes and a ready made team. (See Erickson)
ESPN gives nothing and no one in Miami Sports any credit..at all, if anything that is a net plus. As for drunkard, eh, as long as he doesn't sexually harass the graduate assistants, or catch a DUI, it is Miami after all.. Kidding aside, what I think is the Canes' need more exciting play out on the field and he would provide that in spades, imho Miami is pleading for a high scoring team that people care about and Leach has shown he can provide it. He also is in a position to work for what the U can actually afford to pay him, Randy Shannon's remaining 3 yrs on his contract amounts to 4.5 million dollars that would be money for another round of facility upgrades and easily so. That said, snowball chance in hell he winds up as the Head Coach, for all of Holcutt's bluster about "making the football program relevant again" I am just not seeing them taking any risks or just tossing the budget issues out the window.
Padre...gotta tread lightly with ESPN if you are a College program. THEY basically FORM ALL opinion in college football. They CAN BURY you with recruits. That lawsuit is a terrible idea if you plan to coach again.
From ESPN Insider: UPDATE: Reports are starting to surface that Jon Gruden's meeting with Kirby Hocutt earlier on Wednesday did not convince him to take the Miami job -- ESPN's Joe Schad tweets: "Source close to Gruden says "zero" chance of Miami. UM source says talks "exploratory" and search continues" -- and that Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen is the team's next target. Will Manso of WPLG-TV in Miami tweets: "Being told Canes are ready to meet w Mullen soon." FootballRumorMill.com tweets: "Three sources close to Gruden tell FRM he's very unlikely to accept Miami job. Keep an eye on Mullen." ESPN The Magazine's Bruce Feldman writes in Wednesday's blog: "My hunch is it will be really hard (for Mississippi State) to lock Mullen up if Miami comes calling, which is very possible. He is on the Canes' radar." --- Bruce Feldman counters with this tweet: "Heard from a source the Gruden-to-Miami report was "premature." The meeting this AM is to gauge interest. No terms had ever been discussed." --- Jorge Milian of the Palm Beach Post has a source with info more in line with the CaneSport.com report. Milian's source says that school officials and Gruden have a "level of understanding" on the parameters of a four- or five-year contract, with some significant details to be worked out. Among the most important: protection for the school should Gruden leave for an NFL job after one or two seasons; the budget for assistant coaches and support staff; and whether Gruden can finish out the NFL season on his Monday Night Football gig. "These aren't small concerns, but they can be worked out" if Gruden wants the job, the source said. So the purpose of Wednesday's meeting is for Gruden to determine whether he wants to move forward. (CaneSports.com's report that the sides are already finalizing a contract appears to be premature, several trustees told the Herald. An RC source confirms that there is mutual interest between Gruden and Miami but that not even a handshake agreement in place.) Mississippi State's Dan Mullen does appear to be at the top of the list of next choices, but a trustee tells the Herald that there's a difference of opinion on whether Mullen's two years as a head coach is enough. Herald sources said that Stanford's Jim Harbaugh, Connecticut's Randy Edsall, Utah's Kyle Whittingham and Arizona's Mike Stoops, plus at least two other names, are on Hocutt's wish list. One trustee says that Miami has ruled out three coaches with baggage: former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach (who interviewed with the Canes before Randy Shannon was hired), former South Florida coach Jim Leavitt and North Carolina and former UM coach Butch Davis. --- The U's top targets? Jon Gruden, former Bucs head coach: Likely won't leave the booth unless it's for the NFL.Mark Richt, Georgia: Claims he wants to finish his career in Athens.Dan Mullen, Mississippi State: Enjoyed plenty of success in Sunshine State as Florida OC.Kevin Sumlin, Houston: Has worked with some of the country's best offensive minds.Randy Edsall, Connecticut: Name is hot again following Huskies' turnaround.Jim Harbaugh, Stanford: Likely to get offers that he will find more attractive (Michigan? NFL?).Mike Stoops, Arizona: A defensive coach who could bring the Hurricanes back to their roots.Kyle Whittingham, Utah: Instant rivalry with former boss Urban Meyer.Al Golden, Temple: Is he tired of waiting for Penn State job?Tommy Tuberville, Texas Tech: Former Canes DC was a proven commodity in SEC.Gary Patterson, TCU: Until he leaves, his name will come up for almost any opening.Brent Venables, Oklahoma DC: AD was a teammate of Venables at K-State.The Miami Herald reports that athletic director Kirby Hocutt traveled to Tampa on Tuesday in an attempt to gauge whether former Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden would take the Miami job if it were offered. The two are expected to meet on Wednesday. One UM official told the Herald that Gruden initially declined The U's overtures but has begun to show interest and has suggested that he is considering the job. Several sources tell ESPN's Joe Schad that Gruden remains Miami's top choice. - Albert Lin
No matter who they hire, I'm glad that the powers that be are getting serious about football. I'm happy they're going to spend like the big programs do, because that's what It takes now to win championships. IMO, I think whomever they hire has to fit from a personality perspective. This team is great when it has a big personality as HC. From what I've read, Dan Mullen is kind if a d-bag in the Spurrier mold, so I could see that working out. Richt, IMO, is too nice for this job, though he's LOVED by the board. Tubberville is along the same lines as Richt, but I'd rathe TT because at least he went undefeated in the SEC. Richt is a UM alum right? He's got a good thing going in Georgia though. They love him there, even though this year has been disappointing. I like Mullen. Forget all that "UF leftovers" crap Omar Kelly and others are spewing. Who gives a **** if the guy was at UF? He left to get a HC job because he was a great OC. And those who say (like Omar) his success was due to Tebow, that's also bull****, because Tebow was a goaline/3rd down back (and a true freshman) when they won the NC with Chris Bleeping Leak in 2006. The guy knows his ****. Can you imagine a guy like Lamar Miller in the spread? Holy ****. He's Percy Harvin 2.0. No more rotations, this guy features his playmakers and gets the ball in their hands.
So Gruden is definitely a no-go now, according to reports. Says he wants them to do well, but meeting with Kirby was "exploratory" and was "not serious."
I don't know if anyone here does or not, but I've seen rumblings on Twitter from people like Omar who don't want "UF leftovers" which confirms that Omar doesn't know jack **** about football, and is a total idiot. I also posed the question if UM fans would be opposed to the spread, to which Desides pointed out Gruden learned the spread from Chip Kelly, so people were cool with it. Then again, I think Gruden could've employed the single-wing and people would be cool with it.
Gruden knew the spread before talking with Chip Kelly. He did Florida clinics for a while (I actually have one of his notes). He spent time with Kelly to learn about the no huddle and then was offered the OC job, in which he turned down.
Heard this today from a prominent hurrican football alumni: Chucky wanted to be "the Director of Football Operations, he wanted Jay to be the head coach; jim leavitt was never mentioned"
Agreed! Are there directors of football operations in college football? when said alumnis told me this, i laughed at him. I actually accused him of lying. He said that he was told that Gruden pretty much wanted to have his name associated with the program and do all the recruiting; but wanted his brother to control the team and coaches.

I now want Leach, but I don't think Donna wants his kind of personality coaching the team (watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZaOFTp5_C8) But it's nice to see Leach would love to coach here....gives me some hope at least
Shalalallalala, from what I've been told, is basically directing Holcutt towards guys like Fitzgerald at Northwestern and drooling over Harbaugh at Stanford, the problem is.. won't pay them, it is like tilting at wind mills with this academics stuff for coaches who would have to take a paycut to coach here. Hire Leach for pete's sake and tell Shalalalalalala that he made due with a cheap Texas Tech program with no access to the athletes the U has, and he works for the peanuts she wants to offer a coach..err..that Holcutt wants to offer a coach. Otherwise, the way I hear it, the Iowa State Head Coach is a possibility..yep..Iowa State. If they want a replay of 20k fans in seats watching the 'Canes lose to USF, then by all means take that route.
I'm sure it's Trump. It was said he wrote the letter on the paper that had Shannon's firing on it. Not sure if it's the real copy or a joke though.
Great win for the team. WV lost some players from their final four run last year, but that's still a good team. Can't wait to get ACC play started.
Doesn't major recruitment start December 10th or something?? These guys need a damn coach. F the bowl game LOL That being said, I HOPE THE KILL NOTRE DAME
