There's 10 other guys on offense besides a QB. Time to blame the FO for it's choices.

If Henne doesn't succeed here, it's not b/c a lack of talent, ability, or dedication on his part. It'll be because this regime ruined him as a QB, starting with controlling him like a puppy from day one and never letting up. Our OC is ruining him by refusing to adapt the play book to better fit Henne's needs instead of Penny's. Henning is ruining him by his horrendous play calling and the need to resort to the WC b/c he couldn't devise an offense to move the ball without it (you know-- like normal good teams do). The staff in general is ruining him by poor coaching (not selling the playaction as a team is a perfect example). Sparano is ruining him with all this conservative philosophy bull$@@ (we turned Henne into a caged lion till his eyes glazed over.....and now we're trying to get the lion inside him back). They further controlled him with that friggin practice bell (alarm whatever the hell it is) that IMO could be influencing his ability to develop better pocket awareness. Time's almost up to to throw the ball.... DING. One more second to throw it..... DING.

The FO helped ruin him on several accounts:
    1. by keeping Penny around so that Henne was never handed the full reigns and confidence that this was "his team" because Penny "the savior" was always lurking in the back ground (like CK wisely stated) as well as the team knowing the playbook currently in place is designed to fit Penny.
    2. by not providing him the necessary weapons to succeed during his developmental time here!! It has seemed more like an afterthought. While the Ravens (as 1 of many examples) are busy adding Boldin, Housh, and drafting TEs and elite COP backs, we're busy sifting through FA trash, cutting our 3d round WR, and dropping our 2 veteran WRs including our ONLY deep threat (Ginn & Cammy). Yes, we took 1 step forward by adding Marshall, but then we took 3 steps back from the other garbage.

We have 1 TE. ONE!!! The Pats have 3 at Brady's disposal, and he uses ALL of them (800 combined yards and 9 TDs) For a team that relies on the short dink and dunk passing game, why do we only have ONE freakin TE?! We should have at least 2 that can rotate in to give different looks etc with one capable of threatening the seam (but NOOOOO, our opponents only have to worry about Fasano).

With Marshall out, our receivers are comprised of a 4th rounder and 3 FA rookies. W/o Brandon, we have ONLY 2 receivers with playing experience: a 3rd year slot WR (Bess) and a 2nd year <should be> #4 receiver (Hartline) who is now being over-matched as our #1. Top 10 pick Joe Haden showed why Hartline is a 4th rounder and he was a top CB. Insult to injury, our other 2 boundary receivers are "unready" FA Rookies who would be on every other 31 team's practice squad right now. Seriously, our #3 is a practice squad player. Our #4 is a practice squad player. We have these 4 inexperienced guys going against veterans and some highly drafted young studs. No one sees a mismatch problem with that?

Our #2 TE who should be a complimentary receiving outlet..... ooops, I forgot-- we don't have one. A COP backs with homerun ability?-- don't have one. A ground game that can pick up chunk yards?--- don't have one. A vertical threat to stretch the field and provide Henne a reliable target to use his cannon on? --- don't have one. A sound OLine?---- don't have that either.

These aren't luxuries. These are team needs if you want to succeed in the NFL. Good teams have most of them. Great teams have virtually all of them. I'm sorry, but to think that we can "make-do" without them is ridiculous. A QB can only reach his potential if he has adequate enough and necessary tools to do so.

Everyone is so fast to judge Henne..... but how about for once judging what he actually has to work with?! Do you think Brady, Brees, Manning, Vick, Ryan, Flacco, or Sanchez (to name a few) have these problems? NO, THEY DON'T. There's a reason these teams prioritize getting weapons for their QBs. It's b/c a QB can't do it all by himself. Some of you are always SOOO quick to reference Marino...... but look at who the heck he had to throw to!! He came in with one of the TOP 10 RECEIVING TRIOS OF ALL TIME at his disposal. Tell me Duper, Clayton, & Moore didn't matter. Tell the Lions that Calvin Johnson doesn't matter after the next time he bails their QB out..... ditto for Andre Johnson..... or DeSean Jackson... etc etc.

Better yet, tell Montana, Young, and Jeff Garcia that Jerry Rice, Terrell Owens, John Taylor, Dwight Clark, Brent Jones, Tom Rathman, Roger Craig, Ricky Watters, and Garrison Hearst didn't matter.

    ****2000 & 2001 were Jeff Garcia's ONLY 30+ TD seasons with 94+ ratings and 3500+ yards****

With Rice, Owens, JJ Stokes, Charles Garner, and Hearst, Garcia looked like star!!
    -He had 4,278 yards.... 63.3%......31 TDs.... 10 INTs.... 98 QB rating. (Pro-Bowl)
-In 2001 without Rice, his stats dropped to: 3,538 yards...... 62.7%......... 32 TDs........ 12 INTs........ 94.8 rating. (Pro-Bowl)
-In 2002 without Rice, his stats continued dropping to: 3,341 yards...... 62.1%........ 21 TDs....... 10 INTs..... 85.6 rating. (Pro-Bowl)
-In 2003 without Rice & Stokes (only having T.O) his stats fell to: 2,704 Yards...... 57.4%..... 18 TDs....... 13 INTs.... 80.1 rating. (No Pro-Bowl)

-Garcia with the 2004 Browns & no Owens (instead had Dennis Northcut, Antonio Bryant, and a weak cast), his stats plummeted to: 1,731 Yards... 57.1%...... 10 TDs...... 9 INTs..... 76.7 rating. Without Terrell Owens or Jerry Rice, Garcia's highest TD total was a measly 18..... followed by 13 & 12.

    How about John Elway:

-Elway had ONLY 1 season with over 20 TDs & ONLY 1 season with a QB rating over 80 DURING HIS FIRST 10 YEARS (with 56% his highest completion rate).

-Then he gets Shannon Sharp, Terrell Davis, Anthony Miller, Rod Smith, & Ed McCaffrey..... and his stats skyrocket to averaging about 3700 yards....60% completions..... 24 TDs..... 12 INTs.... and an 88 QB rating over his final 6 years. That's an absurd variance. Don't tell me his surrounding cast had nothing to do with it.

Contrast that to 1992 when Elway's best catchers were a still developing 3rd year Sharp (640 yards), Mark Jackson (745 yards), and RB Reggie Rivers <WTF> (449 yards)..... with Vance Johnson having a torn shoulder muscle (294 yards).
Elways' stats in 92: 2,242 Yards...... 55%..... 10 TDs..... 17 INTs...... 65.7 Rating. Outside of his 83 rookie season, this was by far his WORST overall season.

Silly me to think that a QBs surrounding cast has NOTHING to do with his success (or lack there of). :glare: (enormous amount of sarcasm)

I agree 100%. But I feel we're in the minority now. I think any young qb, would be doomed in this system, these receivers, this o-line, and just this horrible situation.

The system has nothing to do with the poor throws that Henne continues to make.

Yes, Henning needs to be fired but there is no evidence that henne would be appreciably better in another system. Sometimes a guy is what he is.

While you make some very interesting points, and while I agree with alot of what you are saying, Henne is still at fault here too. He's made some really boneheaded decisions throughout the year that really do have to make you wonder what he's seeing, or, what he think's he's seeing really. That being said, he's a guy that hit on alot of big plays at college. So the ability is there. No doubt that at this level the competition, and opposing defenses are far superior from the college ranks, but it really makes me wonder what we've been teaching him, and how we've been teaching him to apply it, and in part, how he's applying it. Then you go back to how theyve handled him in TC with the buzzers and stuff, yeah, I hear ya. We watched, and even heard Steve Young before one of our primetime games saying at that time that with Henne it was like he's not letting the play develop, he's just quickly scanning the field, and unloading the ball. Sounds alot like rushed decisions to me as a result probably of that buzzer. I understand the premise of the buzzer however as often thats all the time the QB has to make the throw. So, I really don't know what to think here anymore with Henne. I like the kid, he's got the tools, he's tough, physically and mentally. I'd really like to see him in an offense not being run by Dan Henning and a team run by Tony Sparano though. Also though, his accuracy has been off. That's something I didnt really notice much watching him in college, but its been a bit of an issue for him here. Is it because he's rushing the throws because he's seeing them late? Possibly... I don't know

Our cast of WR's isn't as bad as you state either IMO. With Marshall healthy, teamed with Bess and Hartline is a nice combo and can be effective when used right IMO. After those three, its trouble, yes, but on what team isnt it? Yesterday, when we were lining up with Bess, Moore and Wallace pretty much the entire second half, you just had to know the offense was going to be terrible, if you didnt think that, something is wrong. It's hard to make due with that little talent at the skilled positions in the passing game.

As for your views on TE. Couldn't agree more. Fasano is our best target, and that isnt saying much at all. He's alright, but we can do way better at that position and have chosen to neglect it year after year, or we've tried to fill the void with guys who would be at best, PS players on other squads.

The OL has been troubling all year, there's no doubt about that. More often than not though, theyve provided pretty darn good pass protection for Chad though. Yesterday he had decent protection Id say, but there were several plays where they just simply broke down as well.

There's no doubt that the surrounding cast plays an important role in a young QB's development. Ours is indeed weak in some areas, and I'm sure that's causing alot of the issues that Chad is having, however so is this entire offense, and some of it is Chad Henne himself. He's missed his share of open WR's with passes, and some that he simply didnt see and throw to, and he's made some boneheaded reads. The boneheaded reads and decisions you can live with because he's young and developing, but at some point they need to be diminished.

As I said, at this point I'm more concerned with what we are doing to prepare the kid each week. We know he struggles with zone coverage, so what are our coaches doing as a team to try and help out with that. Tough to sit here and say as none of us know what goes on behind closed team doors, but from the looks of things I'd say we're doing fairly little. Its either that, or Henne simply isnt applying it. The kid isn't an idiot though, he's an intelligent guy, so I don't think thats it 100%.

Tell me in the Jets game (and others that he "wasn't making throws). He's been like a 62% passer. He can make the throws. We've all seen him do it, and we've all seen him improve on certain areas.

He continues to miss open guys deep. It happened twice yesterday, the Hartline play being the worst of it.

How long is this guy going to get by on two good games against the Jets?

My god you are a terrible poster. It is Henne's fault that he is a terrible qb, it is not everybody except henne's fault. The guy is a ****ing terrible qb, and no amount of coaching will change that. The guy is too stupid to ever be a good nfl qb.

I'll add Terry Bradshaw to the list. Prior to Swann, Stallworth, and Bennie Cunningham being in their prime, he never threw for more than 2500 yards or 18 TDs (and even the 2500 was with a young Swan and Stallworth).

During this time (1970-77), Bradshaw averaged: less than 50% completion..... less than 2000 yards..... roughly 6.2 AVE...... about 14 TDs/s..... and a QB rating around 62.

From 78-81 (with his stud cast), Bradshaw averaged: about 54% completions.... about 3200 yards...... 7.9 AVE...... 25 TDs...... and a QB rating of about 81.

With less than 50% completions, I'd think Terry wasn't making all of his throws either during his less than stellar first 8 years. Just sayin.

Weapons to work with allow a QB to reach his potential.

This idea that an offense needs to be littered with all-pros for a QB to be successful is such a cop-out.

Take AJ Green and replace him with Brian Hartline on that first turnover -- its still a severely underthrown ball that is getting intercepted either way.

Who said anything about "littered with all pros"?! I guess no one on the team needs to have above par ability except the QB huh? RIGGGGHT. Saying that only the QB needs to be good and blaming him when he's not.... that's the real copout!! You obviously haven't glanced at NFL rosters, or at least ones that great QBs have played for throughout history.

-Hartline was looking back on the ball/play for 16 f****** yards. SIXTEEN!!! You're telling me that's not enough time to adjust, but Haden can make the INT when his back is to the ball for most of the play?!!!!

-He took 8 f****** steps before he decided it's time to "attempt" to make a play on the ball.

-He had complete advantage on the play b/c Haden had his back turned to the ball for the first 8 yards that HARTLINE WAS STARING IT DOWN.

-Hart had just as much right to the ball as Haden did, but nice of you to make excuses for our WR not ACTING LIKE A DAMN WR......

-A good WR comes back to the ball AND ATTACKS IT when he has 16 yards to do so. Hartline made ZERO adjustments on it.

Maybe you just don't watch enough football..... b/c good WRs routinely turn underthrows into big plays.

I think some apologies from you are in order, based on that thread alone.

Now back to the discussion at hand, Hartline was wide open, he had beaten the defender cleanly - he shouldn't have to come back and fight for the football. That was a throw any professional should make - its inexcusable.

Nice post Brandon, and I agree with you for most all of it.

I'm not absolving Henne by the least. I'm just not chastising him, and I think it's innaccurate to call for his replacement when guys like Ryan, Flacco, Sanchez, Freeman, and Bradford would be experiencing a tough time under these circumstances too. IMO of course.

Despite everything that's happened around him, Henne has flashed some signs of a great QB in the making. No matter what, our offense will need upgrading and a new OC. I'd rather see what Henne is made of when things are improved, and then make a much more "informed and accurate" decision regarding his potential and future here. I wouldn't want to bring in another QB under this setting. We'd be setting them up for failure too.

If we get a better cast, a deep threat, a viable #2 TE, improved Oline, COP back or upgrade at back in general...... and he still doesn't consistently perform, then he goes. But at least an incoming QB will have the tools to succeed rather than being placed behind the 8 ball IMO.

ADDED: As far as Marshall, Bess, Hartline, and Fasano go..... yes, I do feel they make a strong core. But I also feel they are hindered and not allowed to play to full potential w/o a vertical threat & seambusting TE to open the field or a reliable ground game to keep defenses honest and on their toes. Individually on paper these guys put up #s, but they're lacking as a group. There's no speed as a group. They're all possession receivers. How good is Marshall when he's double teamed b/c defenses feel safe putting their #1 or 2 CB on Hart? How much YAC can Marshall pick up when defenders are draped all over him? He's not even Marshall here; he's a shadow of himself and will continue to be so until we can add a quality #2 WR (with deep threat ability) and move Hartline to #4 where he belongs. IMO

And playing Bess, Moore, and Wallace is an abomination!!! No QB should have to deal with that outside of preseason IMO. Just chop his fingers off while we're at it.... on his right hand. No wonder he threw into tripe coverage on the INT to Bess. I'd throw into it to with 2 guys I dont trust on the field.

Heck, Eli Manning was missing Nicks & Smith and he had it better..... although looked equally as crappy without his studs in the game.

You must have missed the game, in fact all 12 of them and all 15 of his ints, he hits wide open receivers like 10% of the time haha the int to wide open hartline was ridiculous and the one to bess almost matched the first on stupidity and to top it off ive never seen a qb who gets batted down at the line so many times in my life. His ability to lead our team downfield and score in critical situations is not there, his ability to go down and score in any situation is not there. He has way too much to prove and he cant handle the pressure and hes just trying to hard, he either needs to start from scratch and go out there and wing it the rest of the season and see how that goes or just join our outstanding 2nd round joke Pat White and sign with the Royals.

The Hartline INT was not his fault as I've stated in other threads. Rogers pushed McQuistan back into the pocket just as Henne was stepping into his throw. Rogers moved his arm directly into where Henne's follow through would've been. You can see Chad not fully following through b/c there wasn't room to.... and if he did follow through, Rogers might've dislocated his shoulder or hurt his elbow.

Chad was too far into his delivery to pull it back. All he could do was hope he could get enough on it..... but there's no way he throws it 60 yards in the air off balance like that. 50+ was even asking a lot. Heck, Penny would be lucky for 50+ even with a full delivery.

Yes, they "are" routinely intercepted...... when the WR hasn't been watching the ball for 16 freaking yards. If he's just whipping his head around and has had a few yards of sight to make an adjustment, then I'd agree that the trailing DB is in better position to make the play. However, that's simply not the case here. Guys like Andre Johnson & Reggie Wayne (to name a few) would make that play 10/10 times (which includes at the very least breaking up the pass).

So what you're saying is <with a ground game that's nothing special and can't pick up chunk yards, continuously poor field position, 2 weak Rookie FA WRs on the field in the 2nd half replacing Hartline, and no real COP back to work with while Bess is double and triple coveraged> that Henne played like developing young QB...... then you're absolutely right!!! He played JUST LIKE A YOUNG & STILL MATURING QB would whose hands are tied.

God forbid he should actually act like a WR and earn his money.

"Shouldn't have to come back for it?" What do expect him to do-- needle point instead? News flash: not all passes will be hit in stride and between the numbers. To think that receivers shouldn't have to make plays and fight for passes from time to time is absurd...... recipe a failing offense. Case in point: yesterday.
Cmon, now who's excuse making here!? We're not talking about a 15 yard pass here. NO QB IN THE NFL IS THROWING THE BALL 65 yards off balance while his delivery is impeded.

When you become a mod, you can tell me what I should or shouldn't be doing.... till then, good luck with that apology.

The score is 31-23 Jets. The game is on the line you need a score and a two point conversion to tie. With 1:55 left on the clock, it's two minute drill time!

You are down by one point to the Steelers with 2:26 to go. All that you need is field goal position and the fourth quarter comeback is YOURS!

You are down by two scores. It's only 13 points. You have 7 minutes to bring your team back for the win.

It's a 10-10 tie. You are at home (like every other example) and the crowd is totally behind you. You have the ball with 1:34 to go in the game. Field goal position and the fourth quarter comeback is YOURS!

.........and you have the nerve to compare this guy to John Elway?

I think TP is related to him.
You're making your case worse here.

TP...when did you become more enamored with the QB over the team? I have never seen anyone defend someone so hard. Every poster has his/her favorite player or most hated player (mine is crowder), but you have taken it to a whole new level. I agree that henne has improved his touch and pocket awareness, but still he is not up to the levels you have vaulted him.

So you're saying this team as it stands in the 2nd half of the game is fully qualified as a whole to lead itself down the field?.... That Henne should miraculously overcome the rest of the team's deficiencies? Sorry, not buyin it.

The INT to Bess..... are you referring to the one where Henne's only other targets are Hartline who's BLANKETED deep by Haden..... while Fasano was covered up during Henne's initial throwing window? There was no throw to make anywhere. First we complain when he doesn't take chances down field or attempt to squeeze in occasional throws; then we complain when he does try to squeeze in a throw and it's picked.

Let's not forget that he played the 2nd half with 2 guys (Wallace & Moore) that he probably has little to no trust in and certainly no chemistry with. Bess was his only "legit" receiver on the field in the 2nd half..... and Wallace or Moore don't stand a chance against Haden.

You wanna blame someone?... blame the people who put us in the situation where we're relying on Bess and 2 rookie FA WRs to win a game when Bess is being double or triple teamed!!! That's who's at fault, not the guy trying to execute with his hands tied behind his back with this crap.

Most QBs in the league would be trying to squeeze the ball into the only target they trust at that time. I trust Wallace and Moore as little as I do throwing into double or triple coverage.

Could Henne have played better? Yes. But it would have taken a Peyton Manning to win it in the 2nd half with who we had on the field.

That's really an excellent point. A better/more experienced WR would have went back towards the ball BEFORE the DB turned his head and drawn a flag for PI. You see it all the time in this league. W

ToddsPhins, in this post alone, has slaughterd anything you have ever written, combined. This post was extremely well written, thought out and an opinion that most Dolphin fans agrees with.

A damn fine argument could be made that this system has actually protected the team from this quarterback's inability.

    Wide open Hartline. Underthrown.

I mean, does anything else even need to be said? The guy with the monster arm couldn't do what he is designed to do, hit a guy streaking down the field deep. If he can't do that, and he can't do anything else, what is it, exactly, is he supposed to do?

Henne summed it up in his presser:

They were throwing combos at Bess and forcing him to work for it (roughly stated).

What does that actually mean?.... It means that Bess was considered the only threat at WR on the field and could afford to double him up and take him out of the game b/c Moore and Wallace offer zero threat against the Browns defense.

Think about it...... Bess is double covered..... Haden is on Moore...... That leaves Wallace matched up on a vet. That's a losing battle if I've ever seen one.

How is ANY QB supposed to succeed when:
    A. His slot WR is playing outside (and being double & triple teamed).
    B. The top CB of the past 2 drafts is on an undrafted Rookie (Moore).
    C. The remaining waste of a WR (Wallace) is facing a vet CB when he should be facing practice squad guys.
    D. His outlets are reduced to a well covered Fasano.... and running backs who don't scare anyone in the passing game ala Ray Rice or Jamaal Charles.

If anyone can give solid evidence that this scenario wouldn't be extremely difficult for ANY QB, then I'll start a thread stating Henne sucks the big one.

way to take something out of context that was initially mentioned with a grain of salt and intended solely for making a point.

By the way, you look adorable in your ballerina outfit. why'd you superimpose someone else's head on it? :dunno:

For me this year has been like watching people analyze a deer in the headlights. I mean you have some pointing to the growth that driving the deer out of it's home. You have some that want to point to the food thrown out the car window. You have some that want to point at the wildflower seed that were planted on the side of the road. You know, something had to make that deer come out into the street they say. Then you have a few that just want to know why that deer stands there looking into the headlights. It just makes a sane person want to say:

"Well that's a deer standing over there in the street and that's a car coming at him. This seldom ends in a good way."

Ahhhh..... so what you're saying is that Hartline is fully absolved of all his WR duties b/c the ball wasn't placed on the money? RIGHHHHT. Gotchya. Sure. Ok.

They are ENTIRELY 2 DIFFERENT SITUATIONS. Henne's poor throw is on Henne, or more accurately on Rogers for impeding.

Hartline's lack of effort or ability to adjust to a ball that he's tracked for 16 yards is ALL ON HIM. He doesn't get a free pass just b/c it's not hitting him in stride.

I love how you crucify Henne for his QB duties..... but you hold Hartline to a completely different standard for his role as a WR.
