Shula was the master of adapting to the skil players he had. From power running, to changing the way teams defended the arm of Marino. Not the best GM for sure but as a coach? The best ever imo....

Exactly where I am with him, the added complication is Sparano is moving into the final yr of his contract which means:

-Draft a Qb and start over which is probably the right thing to do for the Franchise, but not for Sparano
-Acquire a veteran Qb hopefully one who is young enough to offer yrs of service while Qb's are developed behind them

    0r

Hope that Henne "gets it" in the next 4 games.

He did say that , credit to him , but he was embarrased....not outcoached , on a totally different level.

The Jets have been some and mirrors this season imo. Look at who they should have lost to ... Detroit , Denver , Cleveland , Houston ...

They were exposed last night. Plain and simple.

Well, Rex has consistently said each time he faces NE that he needs his players to win their matchups cause he is going to lose his (at HC). He always tosses Belichick that respect. I wouldnt expect him to backpedal at the podium on this mindset...he has his hands full with BB from a Coach "out-thinking" Coach perspective. Thats his standard MO when facing NE.

Bickety, what do you honestly think about the Jets team this year and what they are doing out there on defense? Honest question, not a rub it in thing.

I've posted several times that I think this is a seriously flawed Jets team. Their defensive linemen are unable to create any sort of pressure on the QB. They can play the run, but that's about it. Their pass defense is completely predicated upon scheme and the league has figured them out. Before Monday, they were near the top of the league in fewest completions allowed, yet almost dead last in yards per completion. They give up far too many big plays in the passing game.

They are going to be hard pressed to beat a team like New England. In fact, even the crippled Colts would be a handful. Until they can generate some kind of pass rush without blitzing, they are going nowhere.

I agree with that sentiment. The reason I asked was to see if we were on the same thought process regarding the team, specifically the defense. I completely understand why they blitz so much. They need to generate a pass rush, which is lacking from the front seven. They really miss Kris Jenkins in my opinion. Sione Pouha is a quality run stuffer, which I like, but he doesn't apply pressure against the pass. Sometimes it looks like he's 2 gapping but in reality, he's attempting to charge the A gap. Mike DeVito falls in the same category as Pouha and Shaun Ellis started off hot but I haven't heard his name called much recently, however I could be wrong on that. The only thing I don't understand is how they game plan with the secondary. They don't ask their cornerbacks to jam and re-route much? I haven't seen it on a consistent basis. Against New England, a team that I felt they HAD to do that, they didn't do it much, barely actually. I saw Cromartie re-route or attempt to, a few times but not with great success. I just don't understand how they can expect to apply that much pressure, leave the secondary players on an island when they have weaknesses that are not taken away by the game plan of Mike Pettine. You have to play to the players strengths and I don't think they are doing that. I know Cromartie is not overly physical but you can't teach him how to jam and re-route? At all? And we've already spoken on the safety position.

What do you think about Sanchez and the offense? Downward spiral?

No. I think Sanchez had a bad game. I still think he is playing way better than last year and they are more than capable of scoring points. The offense will be fine - you just can't count on it to score 46 points :D

Haha at the last line, agreed. I agree he's playing better, although the statistics, whomever they matter to, may show otherwise. He's made throws this year that last year he struggled with IMO. He is still making mistakes though, albeit he'll have 27 starts under his belt at the end of this season. You think he takes the next step in 2011 or do you think he'll make minimal improvement?

Well no secret as if I am thinking it the Jets staff knows it, the dline is not athletic enough as they are to role specific.

Which is where once again Ghost is killing you guys, in the nickel he should be able to run some stunts and generate pressure as he is athletic enough to do so, but either he, or the Jets, are not appearing to do so, in a 40 yd dash Ghost would kill Taylor, put him on the football field and he vanishes.

My gut feeling is that he will continue to approve, but he will never been as good as Brady or Manning. My guess is he will end up being like Eli, which is good enough to win a championship with. He will be the kind of QB that will always need good players around him.

This years Patriot team reminds me a lot of their 2007 team, sans being able to stretch the field with Moss. Over the last decade, other than in 2007, they have relied on a great defense and a high percentage, short, controlled passing game with a good running game. This year they have that short passing game, basically run via the short pass, but their defense is not as good as it was in the early 2000's. They are improving and have shown flashes of being a BB coached defense, but they are really young and IMO not as good as those early 2000's squad.

In short, I think in the playoffs they will be exposed.

By who? Pittsburgh? Baltimore? New York? KC?

They've already handled the best of the AFC with ease and now they're staring at homefield throughout. There's not a team in football that's going to be able to beat them in Foxborough come January.

That's what was said in 2007 too. People tend to forget that the Pats were beaten by the Browns and Jests already. Yes, they just man handled the Jets, but their defense is suspect and they still play GB and Chicago. Also, the Pats have swept the Dolphins one time in like 10 years (2007) and they play us last game of the season.

Anyhow, once they get into the playoffs, with those young guys and against seasoned, veteran, Super Bowl winning, playoff experienced teams, their defense and short passing game will become exposed.

This is, of course, my opinion. However, I also bet my good friend (who is a Pats fan) $2500 on the Giants- Pats Super Bowl. I bought a really nice Sony flat screen with his money. ;)

I have to agree with you. When you think about it, how shocking was it that they put up 45 points on the Jets at home when they slapped 39 on Pit in Pit? Granted 6 points came on an INT return (2 pt failed), but they still ran up 453 yards and 26 first downs on the Steeler defense. Brady was 30/43 for 350 yards and 3 TD's. The Ravens did a better job, but still gave up almost 400 yards of offense to NE. Right now, no one seems to have an answer for that offense. I think a team's best bet is to play ball control-keep away, score TD's on long drives and pray you can hold them off at the end. Good luck.

I'm not exactly sure what you're trying to say - but the only game the '07 Patriots lost was in Arizona.

This season, the Patriots are 5-1 against the so-called 'contenders' in the AFC (Steelers, Ravens, Jets, Chargers and Colts), including a 2-1 record on the road. I'm not sure how they can be considered anything short of the odds-on favorite to represent the AFC in Dallas come February.

You're not sure what I'm trying to say?

My point is that the Pats were the odds-on favorites in AZ in 2007. They were being called the greatest team ever. They stomped everyone in the regular season and post-season up until the Super Bowl. What it took to beat them was a well rounded team, with a very good defense. Why? Well, because they relied on their offense too much. They were one dimensional. They are one dimensional this season too.

My point is that when a team gets into the playoffs, and are one dimensional, they usually lose. Remember the Falcons and Vikes in 1998? What about the 2000 and 2001 Rams? What about all those Marino years? Great offenses and suspect defenses. No one could stop them, remember? At least until they reached the post season.

If you look at the teams the Patriots have played this season, you will see that only 3 of the 11 have winning records. (Steelers- 9-3, Ravens 8-4 and Jets (twice) 9-3. The other 8 teams combine for 33 wins and 62 losses. Is the Patriots offense a product of an easy schedule?

You initially said you think they're going to be exposed in playoffs. I simply asked, by who? They've already beaten every single contender in the AFC.

Your reference of '07 was confusing to me because I'm stictly talking about the AFC playoff picture. During those playoffs, the Patriots were in cruise control in the divisional and conference championship rounds.

I agree with the above. Now tell me who the well rounded AFC team is that can beat them at their place in the playoffs. Just curious who you think that could be.

Ravens and Steelers would be the most well rounded, IMO. I realize that the Pats beat them this season, but they beat the Giants during the regular season in 2007 too.

I also think the Chargers, Jags and Jets could give them trouble in the playoffs.

History shows us that once the regular season is over, records don't matter too much. A team who can run the ball well, pass the ball well enough, and play great defense usually comes out on top. The defense, historically, is the biggest factor in the post season. With very few exceptions have teams with a poor defense made it to the Super Bowl or won one.

On a side note, I think the Pats lose 2 out of their next 4 games. And if the Bills get back to playing how they have been, they may pull it out and make it 3 out of 4.

I guess it's safe to say you aren't sold on the Pats

All I know is that I think the Steelers and the Ravens have very good defenses and the Pats piled up yards on them both. I do not want to include the Jets because I really think their defense is mediocre at best. I've seen Miami (no offense), Cleveland, Houston, and Detroit (with Stafford) move the ball through the air on them with not much resistance. I'd much rather have the Dolphin defense right now - no joke. I think you are better.

Anyway, I am not saying the Pats can't be beat, but the look pretty damn good right now. I am interested to see how they do against the Bears....but if they carve them up..oh boy.

One more thing about the 2007 Pats. It took a miracle catch by Tyree to beat them. And Brady just missed Moss streaking down the sideline after the Giants scored. It took a momumental effort and some luck to beat that Pats team.

Don't get me wrong, I think the Pats, as an entire organization, are one of the best ever. However, history shows us that great defenses and well rounded teams do better in the post season. The Pats offense in 2007 was ranked #1, however they relied mostly on Moss' ability to stretch the field. The Giants caught on to that and stopped it. You say it took luck and a great catch by Tyree and I say it took pressure on Brady (who always looks like a lost, little school boy when he doesn't have 30 seconds in the pocket) and taking away Moss. The Giants did both. People like to blame the Pats defense for losing that game, but in reality it was the offense. That year the defense gave up an average of 17 points per game. In the Super Bowl they gave up 17 points. However, the Pats offense averaged 37 points per game and only scored 14. It looks like the defense did it's job just fine.

Anyhow, the Patriot's defense is suspect and their offense relies too heavily on those short, high percentage passing routes. A good defense, especially a good defense that has already faced that type of play once this season (Ravens, Steelers, Jets) will find a way to beat it. As did the Giants against the long ball after their loss to the Pats 4 games before the Super Bowl.

I hear what you're saying, and Ima let you finish....

But this is what you said in the Welker thread about 2 months ago.

"Brady with top 5 defense== 3 Super Bowl wins

Brady without top 5 defense== 0 Super Bowl wins

Those are the real numbers that matter."

Not to mention that you also said this..

Actually, he won't unless "he" has a top 5 defense.

This was quoting my post that Brady will find a way to win.

You stated that the only reason that Brady won those superbowls was because he had a top 5 defense and the offense was lackluster. Now you are saying that one dimensional teams are exposed in the playoffs but, based on your commets, the Pats were one dimensional for all those years. I agree the Pats are all offense right now, but their defense did hold the Jets to 3 points. They did shut down Pitt for all but 10 minutes of the game.. The offense put up 23 points through 3 quarters and the defense only allowed 3. Look at the progression of this defense, it has only gotten better and better.

There is no other team in the league right that is a "sure win" against the Pats. There are quite a few teams that will challenge them and can win, but none are sure wins.

    Thanks for letting me finish...lol.

Anyhow, try re-reading, and comprehending my posts. I said typically it's well rounded teams that win Super Bowls. I said that defense is usually the major key in winning Super Bowls. I said that the Pats had great defenses on their Super Bowl winning teams. I never once said that the Pats were one deminsional or that their offense was lackluster. You're a liar.

The Pats Super Bowl winning teams weren't one deminsional. They had great defenses. Their offenses were average to above average. They ran the ball well, and they threw the ball short well.

And Brady hasn't won a Super Bowl with a defense ranked lower than 5th. The defense has gotten better as this season progressed. Again, I even said they have shown flashes of being a BB coached defense.

There are no games in the NFL in any week against any team that are "sure wins". Not sure where you're trying to go with that.

All in all your reply to me is full of holes, without any thought, full of lies, and basically stupid.

    No offense.

They were actually fairly one-dimensional at times. They passed the ball short to make up for the lack of a running game until Corey Dillon arrived.

It's true though. The defenses were always excellent, especially against the run. The Pats always, always stop the run and when they don't they get beat badly. Wait a minute, how come we've never tired to just overwhelm them in the running game through a spread formation.

There's plenty of offense in that.

I'm a lair? You said on this very page in this thread that they are and that they were one dimensional.

They ran the ball well with Antoine Smith? I mean, seriously. He was awful. Corey Dillon was with them in 04 and then fizzled out.

You didn't say typically well rounded teams win superbowls... You said great defenses and well rounded teams win them.

I might be stupid, but you must be either fresh off the island or a butter stick, because you have no respect.

Try and keep up. Comprehend what is going on. You're talking about two different things. Re-read my posts and realize what I'm saying. If you still don't get it, ask your mom or dad to read them to you.

The Pat's Super Bowl winning teams all had good to great running teams, elite defenses and good, short passing games. WELL ROUNDED. The 2007 Pats, a LOSING Super Bowl team, was one deminsional.

Here's a little hint for you, you said I called those Super Bowl winning Pats teams "one deminsional". You're a liar. However, you then show that I called this year's Pats team one deminsional in order to try and prove yourself right. You're funny.

Let's see if you can figure it out. Good luck!
