and honestly I hate Conn, it is worthless, the only good thing about Conn is Ray....their troopers are all unmarked, there has literally been construction on 95 going on in that State since I was 5, and I am 35....traffic, no attractions except the old Pirelli building, and the flag guy on the water near New Haven....and UCONN!!!!!!!!! I cant stand UCONN, and Calhouns freaking face!!!.....after they rank on Providence College every year, except when Bridgeport native Ryan Gomes beat UCONN for like 3 straight years......this was pure gold..... I think you'd find plenty of people that would disagree with you about that one, but I appreciate the kind words, haha. I obvious like CT because that's my home, but yeah there's nothing too exciting about the state. Expect it is home of the waffle ball, Pez candy and the WWE headquarters. Rumor has it Derek Jeter has a house in CT too but who knows.
And Taylor Buchholz. I wouldn't be surprised to see if they made post tender deadline deals with either. Miller could definitely use some more time in the minor leagues.
I cant wait to see what the Sox gave up for Gonzo, what Single A ballplayer they convinced is the next Willie Mays.... Solid move for the Sox...
Oh come on I'm sure we'll have to give up a Double A guy or 2. Seriously though I bet it's Casey Kelly, Anthony Rizzo, Stolmy Pimentel/Drake Britton and Reymond Fuentes, maybe one of the Sox minor league catchers too Exposito/Lavarnway. Either way I'm going to love the deal. It's Adrian freakin' Gonzalez.
A-Gone for Rizzo, kelly, fuentes and a player to be named later....Great deal on both sides. Gonna make for one hell of a ride in the A.L. East.

When did SD relocate to Charlestown??? LOL.....did anyone report this latest Bank Robbery. props to Theo and Co...but man oh man.....hurts
No Ranaudo or Iglesias. If Gonzalez's shoulder is 100% this cannot be considered anything short of an absolute coup for Theo and the rest of the front office.
Ranaudo isn't allowed to be traded until mid-August. All draft signings have a 1 year no trade clause. Gammons is reporting the PTBN isn't going to be anyone of major value (i.e. a top prospect).
Even with Adrian Gonzalez on board I still think the Sox will still get Crawford or Werth. Werth is probably more likely at this point due to him being a RHH. Although I'd still like to see if they can trade for Justin Upton and I'm sure Theo and Co. will speak to Arizona at the GM meetings this week.
Wow....very shocked. Wonder is SD feels like they get a second chance, or does Sox regroup and try again (and give into AG's demands) or go elsewhere?
Oh, well...it was the one thing putting a smile on my face following the horrible Dolphins game Red Sox to get Adrian Gonzalez after all In a deal set to be announced Monday, the Red Sox will acquire Adrian Gonzalez from the Padres for right-hander Casey Kelly, first baseman Anthony Rizzo and outfielder Reymond Fuentes. The deal will get done without the extension Boston and Gonzalez were working on up until Sunday’s 2 p.m. ET deadline. The New York Post’s Joel Sherman says the two sides have the parameters of a deal agreed to, but will wait to finalize. It’s possible that the two sides do in fact have an agreement, but the Red Sox will wait until April to announce it in order to stay out of the luxury tax for 2011.
I fully expect the Red Sox and Gonzalez to announce a contract extension the first week of April to avoid the luxury tax for 2011. With over 40 million off the table at the end of the year between Drew, Ortiz, Wakefield, Papelbon, Cameron and Scutaro it makes sense to wait until the start of the season (like they did with Beckett this past year).
Red Sox have a preliminary agreement with Adrian Gonzalez on a seven-year extension for $154 million. Right in line with the 8/180 for Tex.
Been away for a while, solid move by the Sox, they got Gonzo for a song... Hey RF, where is there a site I can go that I can get pitcher versus indivual team stats.... like CC vs the Sox or Lester vs the Yanks...?
Baseballreference.com has them. If you're on the player's main page there's a tab just between the standing stats sign and the actual stats that says 'vs. batter' (for pitchers) or 'vs. pitchers' (for batters) if you want to see how they did against a certain player. If you want to see how they did against a certain team in general, just click on the 'splits' tab and choose whether you want to find a certain year or for their entire career. Easy to find, you can't miss it. FYI- If you ever need to look up a certain stat the best site to look is either baseballreference.com or fangraphs.com. They have it all.
While playing by the rules, and I relize that, it underscores vastly just one of the reason why the set up in baseball is broken...
Big time: Red Sox, Crawford reach seven-year $142M deal Wow, stunned and impressed at the same time. Tip of the hat to Theo for taking the shot for another title. My goodness its a gamble ~ Werth really did screw the market up!
Yeah well obviously the Red Sox found a loophole and you can't fault them for being smart about it. I'm really not sure how there's any way around that rule though since the accounting of the contracts is on opening day contract value.
Just in time for tickets sales....that are this Saturday at 10am......they know what they are doing... I cant wait to buy them...
oh I am totally agreeing that it is smart....just broken.... On top of saving a bunch of coin for the team, when it shouldnt be what it does is give idoit Sox fans(not you guys obviously) ammo to say "Well Yankee fans we dont spend like you, because we dont have a luxary tax"...which at that point I always just laugh... I agree with the move because as I have stated on here many times, I would rather see the team that makes the money keep the money, as opposed to handing away to a team that has no intention of bettering the team...
Oh you know damn well that they knew this too. And you can be sure they will have Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez jerseys and t-shirts in stores by the weekend as well. Hey Christmas is still 2 weeks away! I have no problem with larger market teams who spend money giving it back to the smaller market teams. What I have a problem with is those small market teams just putting it back into their pockets. MLB should inforce a rule that if the teams don't use the luxury tax money on the actual team they have to give it back. Of course, there can be loopholes with that as well. No system is perfect unfortunately.
Interesting takes on Crawford deal and impact... http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2...l-crawford-deal-actually-you-know-a-good-one/ Crawford is a career .296/.337/.444 hitter, which puts his career OPS+ at 107. Which is OK, because obviously a lot of his value comes on defense and on the base paths. But as David Pinto points out in an excellent post over at Baseball Musings, time stops for no man, especially men whose game is built on speed. He has never hit more than 19 homers. Once he stops being a force on the bases and loses a step or two in the outfield, even a spike up to 25-30 home runs a year won’t justify $20 million+ at the back end of this deal.
well now, this is how we say interesting.... Gonzalez: No Agreement In Place With Red Sox By Nick Collias [December 9 at 12:18pm CST] Adrian Gonzalez hasn't agreed to anything more than a trade. In a phone interview with the Mexican blog Puro Beisbol (link in Spanish), the normally tight-lipped first baseman denied reports from Sports Illustrated, USA Today and other sources that he and the Red Sox have tentatively agreed to an extension that won't be announced until April in order for the team to avoid luxury tax. "Nothing about that is true," Gonzalez told Fernando Ballesteros. "It's false. I haven't signed any contract." Indeed, by Gonzalez's account, the two sides have yet to even delve into specific figures, despite word that he asked for, and received, approximately $161MM over eight years. "We discussed the trade, but we didn't reach any agreement, and we didn't negotiate numbers," Gonzalez explained. "The only thing I have for sure is the contract that I had already signed with the Padres, and what I can tell you is that over the course of the season we're going to negotiate to reach an agreement." Left unasked was what, specifically, led to the impasse that nearly derailed the trade last week, but Gonzalez's quotes leave open the possibility that it centered on expectations of years rather than salary. When asked if eight years, $161MM was his goal, Gonzalez stayed mum, saying, "Look, the market changes every day in baseball. Right now I don't know what to tell you because the team could use it to its advantage, so the day that [the Red Sox] want to sit down and discuss my contract, we'll happily do it, and that day we'll say what we want." Gonzalez gives no indication of discontent with his new team in the interview, insisting that he is "enthusiastic" about both the upcoming season and reports of how his power will play in Fenway Park. However, his portrayal of the negotiations tempers expectations, at least for the time being, about the dawn of a Gonzalez/Crawford decade in Boston.
Not worried about it. While it may very well be true that there's no extension that has been agreed to (although even sources from different media outlets say that an agreement is in place), it's going to get done. Both sides need each other and I'll be shocked if there isn't an annoucement shortly after the first game of the year that its done.
While I believe so as well, you better hope so....the Mets could use a 1st baseman, and need to make a splash at the end of this season...
But they have Ike Davis! I'll be shocked if the Sox and Gonzalez don't agree to an extension. Theo wouldn't have give up those 3 prospects for only 1 year of Gonzalez without being 100% sure he could land a deal in the future.
Exactly. I have heard (from I think Gammons) that the Red Sox and Josh Beckett agreed to an extension during ST last year and Beckett may have even signed the contract then but the Red Sox didn't submit the paperwork to the MLB office until after the first game was played thus avoiding the tax.
Did anyone else hear Crawford say his "heart was in Boston"....Really? Kinda like when johnny damon "always wanted to be a tiger". I know he's not going to say "my bank account always belonged to boston" but sheesh, seriously he's already starting the relationship off with Lies....
