how utterly tragic is it that Red Dead got their game of the year award?

Mass Effect 2 was miles better.

Both games would have been deserving of the award. Theres no way to knock RDR for getting it IMO, it was well put together in both SP and MP.

Red Dead Runaround was one of the dullest experiences i've ever had. Im really tired of Rockstars formula in general. Red Dead does nothing GTA doesn't do and they don't deserve praise for re-skinning their own game. Here's a guy who needs you to do 5 missions that consists of chasing, outrunning or racing, then your reward for these pointless missions is just enough information to get you to the next person who needs you to do 5 missions so he can give you another sliver of info that will lead you to some other guy. They've literally turned doing errands into a videogame.

And since theres no radio stations on horseback, the entire game is spent silently riding from one place to another.

and then you go to Mexico and blah blah.

the final couple hours were alright i guess.

So your bagging the game because they used the same formula as GTA? So I guess anyone who enjoyed Oblivion & Fallout 3 have something wrong with them? You want to know something it did that GTA didnt do? It put together a solid story, making use of strong writing in Theme, Characters, and Plot. The gameplay worked better than GTA because it didnt constantly end in evading idiotic police AI. It also had better gunplay overall, and had a much improved cover system.

If you dont like the formula of this kind of game its somewhat confusing why you would bother to play it in the first place. There were tons of nuances that were taken from that game, it payed homage to many big western films. Its also one of the few serious toned stories in any video game that has been done so successfully. There were plenty of things they could have done to make it better, but in the end I did appreciate even the linear plot they forced upon us being that they had a great idea from the beginning on what to do with John Marston's character.

RDR is a great game, and from my experiences it is one of the few video games that has captivated random friends and family that see it for the first time, some not even being gamers. Outstanding voice acting, great animation, amazing writing, using a familiar game play style that is perfectly suited for it.

Also, lets not act like the same people developed this game as GTA. This is the same team that did Red Dead Revolver & a bunch of other titles like Midnight Club(which also used GTA engines btw). From the end result of Redemption in Single player & Multi player, I think they made the right choice to built from that engine. It makes far more sense than the Fallout series being piggybacked on the engine made for the Elder Scrolls, thats for sure.

While the wait does suck it gives me time to do another play through of the first 2 games. I initially beat the first game on the PC before playing ME2 on the 36o...so none of the story carried over from the first game for me obviously.

Bioware's games are great, I was happy to see them get Developer of the year at the VGAs. It brings back memories as a kid of those "choose your adventure" books while still bringing great game play. Between ME & Dragon Age, Bioware has really hit the sweet spot on story driven RPGs in the modern era. I have come to accept for a long time that there will never be another Baldurs Gate, but I believe that devs like Bethesda could learn a lot from Bioware when it comes to story being at the forefront of the RPG.
