I remember watching the first quarter and thinking, I should take some notes of all the boneheaded mistakes made by this offense. Well this post isn't about that. It's more of just some random comments subject for conversation.

Ronnie Brown has never ran to the correct hole. He leaves yardage on the field. It would be excusable if he busted a big play from the undisciplined nature of his carries but he does not. After about a quarter and a half of watching this guy dance in the backfield I said, "Bill Bellichick can have him." I have not been more "done" with a guy than watching six years of this crap with "hope" as a main source of inspiration.

I don't even want him resigned on the cheap. That would acceptable if he was good in pass protection but his missed assignments in that area yesterday got Chad Henne killed on a 3rd and 5 in the second quarter by Calvin Pace because this guy can't recognize a zone blitz. That was THE turnover that led to points as it gave the Jets the ball in our territory. One series later he fumbles at the 48. In the third quarter he completely whiffs on Shaun Ellis (who he is suppose to double with a backup TE) and now it's 2nd and 17. I'm just done with this guy.

Jake Long killed another drive with a holding penalty. We were moving the ball pretty effectively in the first quarter. We get a first and 10. Jake Long makes it 1st and 20. This isn't the first one this year neither. The injury is taking it's toll.

My gosh is Phillip Merling fat and out of shape.

All during the offseason we had this dark cloud hanging over the defense. It was a dark cloud caused by an injury and subsequent retirement. Then we discover that the regime has plans to move another player to the position. The sky is officially blue again. Paul Soliai has become a dominant force in the middle of the defense. You couldn't miss all the hustle and just flat out beastly plays he was making yesterday but just watching the replay I noticed one that we all probably missed. At the beginning of the second quarter Soliai swats from the ground beside Sanchez. The ball fluttered out of Sanchez hand like a dead duck. I think Soliai got a piece of the ball. The Jets fat O-line beat our fat D-line in a race for the ball but they lost a good 7 yards on the play.

A couple of plays later the Jets go for it on 4th and 2. They attempted to double team Soliai and run right at him. That freaking wall did not budge. Soliai split the double team! He didn't get any love from the announcers but man that was flat out ballin'.

Sean Smith missed two interceptions in the first 17 minutes alone.

Special Teams won this game for us yet someone in the gameday thread said Darren Rizzi needed to be fired. When your special teams is covering 70 yard punts, I think you are doing a damn fine job.

The ball that Santonio Holmes drops in the endzone? It was quarters coverage and Nolan Carrol got juked out of his cleats.

Now this observation is just petty but it sort of matches an overall theme in the secondary. I remember thinking when Chris Clemons caught a ball out of bounds that was essentially tossed to him - why even run out of bounds? His angle was not carrying him out of bounds. It was more of a reaction like, "I can't do anything. He's going to catch or not catch it." It just bothered me at the time that awareness doesn't keep him on the field. There was no point in running out of bounds. He didn't need to do it to slow his momentum because he essentially had none. Like I said, it's petty but I would just like for SOMEONE to show that they realize that defense is simply not "bat the ball down."

Someone made the observation yesterday in the gameday thread. He said, "How does a ball start at the .5 yard line and the chains end past the 11 yard line?" Well with replay I can now answer that question. The tip of the ball was spotted right at the one so that is where the chain starts. I believe that on the punt coverage the ball was first touched there by a Jet defender and THEN he picked it up at the .5. In any event, the original spot had the tip of the ball touching the one yard line. The on screen graphics actually show the blue line (start line) just past the one. So the chains were not messed up. I believe the spot was on the third down run was a bad spot though. Ronnie Brown was pushed back by a Jet defender after his forward surge was stopped. I could give it a too close to call rating though.

Someone else in the gameday thread made the observation that the Jets were going for the fair catch kick going into the half.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_catch_kick

Upon replay you can see the Jets staff going nuts trying to get the guy to give the fair catch signal and catch the ball in the air. That is what Rex Ryan was cussing about going into the half. The ball would have been placed at OUR 48 had the dude actually caught the ball. With the ability to place that sucker on a tee, I think 3 points were averted by the boneheaded mistake.

Sean Smith misses third interception in the 3rd quarter.

How does Yeremiah Bell not KILL Mark Sanchez at their 5 yard line. He was completely untouched!

The Wildcat pass to Brandon Marshall... It's got to be a run/pass option. It was blocked as a run. The nearest defender to Marshall was 14 yards away when counting vertically (10) and laterally (4). I like the option. I like the pass. It's a win/win proposition assuming Marshall actually catches the damn thing.

Sean Smith misses the 4th interception in the fourth quarter. That is one play before the Jets put 3 more points on the board.

Sean Smith misses the 5th intereception with :54 seconds left in the game.

Two plays that went relatively unnoticed in the fourth quarter were made by our 7 foot tall middle linebacker. One was a blitz and a batted ball. The other was on the final drive knocking the football out of Sanchez hand. Between this guy and Sean Smith, Mike Nolan is taking the Dustin Kellers of the world out of the game.

Guys that simply played out of this world:

    Special Teams:
    Brandon Fields
    Reshad Jones
    Jonathon Amaya
    Nolan Carrol

    Defense:
    Paul Soliai
    Sean Smith
    Cameron Wake
    Karlos Dansby

    Offense:
    Chad Henne

Why Chad Henne? Because late in the third quarter he realized that the goal for him was just not to lose the game. That in itself is an accomplishment.

Sad, but true. Despite him not doing anything of note after the first quarter, he also didn't throw any ints, although he came really close once or twice. The Defense bailed him out, because if we had lost this, he's pretty much the only guy on the field who had a bad day.

I saw some things yesterday that let me know just how bad Sparano and Henning must feel about the personell on the field. The right side of the line was protected by a back or a TE for the entire game in passing situations. Murtha is not very coordinated in pass pro.

Fasano aligned at the Z for Hartline on the runs (outside the other TE).

Bess aligned at the Z for Hartline passing routes.

Marlon Moore is playing the X formerly occupied by Marshall and Henne doesn't even look at him.

.....the running game has boiled down to fullback kick/lead and guard pull or power sweep with both guards pulling. The problem with that is the starting running back will not run between them. He (as always) thinks there is something better outside the kick out. The only thing Ronnie Brown can run is Wildcat or a dive. He sucks at everything else.

This offense is challenged. It is really, really challenged. I hope we can get Vernon Carey back for the next game. Losing Hartline and Carey in the same week has destroyed any chance of having a conventional running game. People clamouring for speed in the place of Hartline have not been watching Hartline block. The dude is a mauler and Davone Bess cannot replace him.

agreed on Ronnie Brown...The message that his brain sends to his feet, the moment he gets the handoff, is fuc$ed in the head...the guy is becoming a wuss, and iam well aware of how athletically challenged his interior line is..

The comment about leaving yards on the field sums it up best..

Yes, Phillip Merling is fat and out of shape...He's got one offseason to play for him and his families future, if we dont see a tremendous physical change in the player, iam gonna take it as ignorant and disrespectful.

Paul solai...I saw an interview of him talking about how he wants to dominate the opponents running game...He sounded and looked like a very focused professional athlete.

Deangelo williams..Mark Ingram..LaMichael James...one of those boyz needs to be a miami dolphin.

I feel like Bell missed sanchez on purpose. at the speed he was going, they'd have called unnessecary roughness even if he hit him square with his shoulder. Especially since sanchez ducked, Bell would have definitely touched his helmet in someway and we ALL know thats a penalty.

I've been seeing this out of Ronnie from day one.. I've also been blasted and called names for nicknaming him "Saturday Night Fever Brown" for his incredible dancing ability when he sees an open hole...

Outside of his magical run in 2007 when the team was hopelessly eliminated after the first few weeks, Ronnie has been a failure here in Miami.. I never had the hope that many people had for him..When you factor in his injury history, I think it's safe to say that Ronnie Brown has been a bust as the overall #2 pick.. And I don't care what Cadillac Williams has done in Tampa..

The whole offense is a mess from top to bottom. I still think Henne gets too much blame, but such is life as a quarterback.

great post zod. reshad jones was great on special teams yesterday. didnt notice amaya but i'll watch the game again. good insights throughout the post. didnt really consider hartline's blocking but its a very valuable insight. its funny but your observation about sparano and henning not trusting the personnel is spot on. its so obvious and it effects the playcalling big time. this offense has no bread and butter that we can rely on. i am pretty much done with ronnie brown too although i could see him taking over the ricky williams role if we get another back. that missed blitz pickup that crushed henne was downright criminal. agree 100% about paul soliai. i'm starting to think he's the best defensive player we have. with him, cameron wake and vontae davis (who i believe pitched a shutout yesterday) we have a pro bowler at every level of the defense

Boomer used to do a post after each game with analysis and jibes called Lowering the Boom. This was the first lengthy analysis post I've seen in a while, so I was trying to tie the two together but it just doesn't have the same ring

I love Ronnie but Dolphins need a fast young guy at Starting RB next season. Ricky should be back in 2011 as a backup again so he can retire a Dolphin, and he's averaging 4.4 YPC as a backup which is pretty good, and when you watch him he can still make something out of nothing. I like Cobbs too, I'm surprised we haven't used him these past two weeks in the passing game.

QB is more important than RB though, and Henne is very suspect. They will need another QB anyway with Pennington most likely done, so hopefully they go big in Free Agency/Trade or 1st round and bring in some competition.

Glad to see my mention of the fair catch kick/free kick wasn't missed. Soliai has been pretty impressive - we need to re-sign him.
